Brad McEwen, who left the Lethbridge Hurricanes last month, has signed on with the Medicine Hat Tigers. McEwen, a veteran of the WHL wars, had been the Hurricanes' assistant GM and director of player personnel. He resigned from the Hurricanes, who had offered him a new contract, citing personal reasons.
A source told me Sunday night that McEwen has signed with the Tigers as the second in command to head scout Bill McLellan of Regina. McLellan, who took over as the Tigers' head scout when Bob Green left Medicine Hat to join the Edmonton Oil Kings as their GM, apparently has indicated plans to retire after one more season. McEwen, then, would take over as head scout or director of player personnel after 2007-08.
McEwen and McLellan know each other from Swift Current and the Broncos. McEwen was named assistant GM/assistant coach of the Broncos on June 19, 1988. The GM/head coach agt the time was McLellan's son, Todd. He left for the IHL's Cleveland Lumberjacks on April 1, 2000, and McEwen was named GM/head coach three days later.
