Notes . . .

An 80-hectare piece of property near Sorrento, B.C., that is owned by former NHLer Ivan Matulik may end up in government hands.
Federal Crown prosecutor Monica Harmel has made application for the forfeiture of the property after a massive marijuana grow operation was found there.
The Crown has alleged that Matulik was involved in what was a large-scale grow op and in plans to distribute marijuana, as well.
Matulik did not oppose the application for forfeiture of the property, which has been appraised at $960,000.
The Crown also has asked for forfeiture of equipment valued at $88,000.
Matulik apparently purchased the land for $200,000 and spent $113,000 on renovations and buildings.
Matulik, 39, is a Slovakian who was a seventh-round selection by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1986 NHL draft. He never played in the NHL, but did play in the AHL (1987-93) before returning to Europe where he played through 2004-05.

The Kelowna Rockets will have more than 130 players in their rookie camp when it opens Thursday morning. . . . The Saskatoon Blades are taking the other road and not holding a rookie camp. Lorne Molleken, the Blades’ GM/head coach, told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix that he wants to get right into main camp next week and be down to 26 players in a hurry. Because of the desire to get down in numbers, the Blades also did away with the traditional intrasquad game. "Because of our depth, it's going to be one of the most competitive camps we've had," said Molleken. . . . One player with a shot at cracking the Blades’ roster is LW Curtis Hamilton of Kelowna. His father, Bruce, is the Rockets’ president and general manager. . . . The Vancouver Giants will announce Thursday that most of their games will be on Vancouver radio station CKNW. Last season, they were on AM 730. . . . Giants owner Ron Toigo told The Province’s Steve Ewen that he and head coach Don Hay are working on a contract extension. Hay is in the third year of a five-year contract.

D Jesse Dudas,19, who has missed more games than he has played over the last two seasons, is in camp with the Prince George Cougars. Dudas has had injuries and personal issues the last two seasons. Last season, he had 29 points in 32 games so the Columbus Blue Jackets’ draft pick has some talent. “My head’s here, it’s where I am, ready to do camp and do whatever I can to help,” Dudas told Jim Swanson of the Prince George Citizen. “I’ve had injuries, and I was bitter about life . . . I never heard anything about not coming back. Rumours went around, sure, but my name’s on the list here and it’s up to the coaching staff and general
manager now. I’m a Cougar, now, forever, unless they make a decision.” . . . There may be three — count ’em, three — Ryan Whites in the WHL this season. Ryan White, who is from Brandon, is a 19-year-old centre with the Calgary Hitmen. Ryan White, who is from Edmonton, is a defenceman with the Kamloops Blazers. And now there’s centre Ryan White, from Parker, Colo., who is expected in camp with the Everett Silvertips. He was a seventh-round pick in the 2006 bantam draft.

There are a couple of changes to the Medicine Hat Tigers’ coaching staff as camp begins. Oh, GM/head coach Willie Desjardins, associated coach Shaun Clouston and assistant Darren Kruger remain. But goaltending coach Eli Wilson has joined the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and Bryan Ellerman, a long-time part-time assistant, has stepped aside due to the time commitment needed to coach a midget AAA team. J.F. Martel is the new goaltending coach.
