MONDAY’S GAMES
at Edmonton
Regina 3, Kelowna 2 — The Pats (2-1) got goals from Nick Ross, Jared Jagow (shorhanded) and Cody Gross as they ran their exhibition record to 2-1. The Rockets, who are 0-3, got one goal from Colin Long. Sorry, couldn't find the name of the other scorer. . . . Kelowna was without F Dylan Hood, who was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a hit from behind on Sunday.
Swift Current 3, Kamloops 1 — The Broncos (2-1) got one goal in each period, with Phil Gervais, Christian Magnus and Derek Claffey scoring. Brendan Ranford, Kamloops’ first pick in the 2007 bantam draft, replied for the Blazers (2-1). . . . Ranford, 15, is from Edmonton and remained at home when the Blazers boarded their bus and headed for home. He’ll play midget AAA with the Canadian Athletic Club. . . . The Blazers also reassigned C Jake Trask, 16, to the midget AAA Saskatoon Blazers and C Richard Vanderhoek, 16, to the BCHL’s South Surrey Eagles. . . . Kamloops’ roster now is at 29, including two injured players — LW Alex Rodgers (shoulder) and D Mark Schneider (wrist) — and D Keaton Ellerby, who is with Team Canada.
Edmonton 5, Prince George 3 — The Oil Kings (2-1), down 2-0 after one period, scored four straight goals, three of them in the second period. Craig McCallum scored three times for Edmonton, with J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Brenden Dowd adding one each. Dowd also had two assists, as did Karey Pieper. Kalvin Sagert, Alex Poulter and Jordie Deagle replied for the Cougars (1-2). Chris Ward (12 saves) and Dalyn Flette (16) split the Edmonton goaltending. Joel Danyluk (42) went the distance for Prince George.
The Saskatoon Blades had planned to get down to 26 bodies after the long weekend but some performances left the coaching staff wanting to see more, so they ended up cutting to 32. That figure doesn’t include F Colton Gillies, who is with Team Canada. The Blades are down to four goaltenders — veterans Braden Holtby and Garrett Zemlak, and newcomers Matthew Krahn and Adam Morrison. . . . The Saskatoon roster also includes only two 20-year-olds — forwards Chris Durand and Michael Kaye, both of whom were acquired in offseason deals. . . . Saskatoon LW Troy Crowley, 18, left the club on his own Saturday and went home to Winnipeg. He had two points and 43 penalty minutes in 52 games last season. . . .
Craig Anderson, who had great success as head coach of the midget AAA Brandon Wheat Kings, now is scouting for the Edmonton Oil Kings. Anderson spent four years with the midget Wheat Kings and won the 2004 Canadian championship with them. . . .
Brayden Schenn had two goals to lead Team White to a 5-4 victory over Team Black in the Brandon Wheat Kings’ intrasquad game on Sunday. Schenn’s second goal, with 24 seconds left in the third period, broke a 4-4 tie. Andrew Clark also had two goals for the winners, with Brandon Regier, Brandon’s first pick in the 2007 bantam draft, getting the other. Colby Robak, Kyle Ireland, Cale Jefferies and Daryl Boyle scored for Team Black. The stars of the show, however, may have been Team White goaltenders Deven Dubyk and Graham Hildebrand, who combined for 35 saves. . . . Long-time Wheat Kings watcher James Shewaga, the Brandon Sun’s sports editor, wrote of Schenn: “The 2006 first-round bantam draft pick looks like he will be Brandon's best 16-year-old since Eric Fehr and Ryan Stone.” . . .
The Red Deer Rebels are down to 25 players after assigning D Dominic Perrault to the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians. Included in the 25 is F Connor Redmond, 15, the Rebels’ first pick in the 2007 bantam draft. Red Deer will open its exhibition schedule tonight against the Calgary Hitmen in Airdrie, Alta. The game will mark the WHL head coaching-debut of Red Deer’s Brian Sutter. The Rebels will be without F J.D. Watt (Calgary Flames), F Brett Sutter (Calgary Flames), F Brandon Sutter (Team Canada) and G James Reimer (Toronto Maple Leafs). . . .
