How about a Canada-U.S. junior Super Series, rather than another go-round of the Canada-Russia Stupor Series we just witnessed? William Houston of The Globe and Mail is speculating that a six-game Canada-U.S. series could be played, with games in Detroit, St. Paul and Grand Forks. . . . You have to wonder what U.S. schools would think of freeing up their players for such a series? And then having to free them up again for the world junior tournament? . . .
On their way back from NHL camps:
D Victor Bartley, to Kamloops from Detroit
D Chad Greenan, to Kootenay from Detroit
D Patrik Magnusson, to Prince George from Detroit
D Cameron Cepek, to Edmonton from Montreal
C Milan Kytnar, to Kelowna from Edmonton
The Regina Pats have G Linden Rowat back from the camp of the Los Angeles Kings. He’ll be the Pats’ starter, which means Regina is going to have to choose a backup. That will be either Jeff Bosch, 17, or Damien Ketlo, 16. . . . Regina is carrying 28 players and is expected to trimm a goaltender, a defenceman and a forward early in the week. . . .
There almost certainly will be some movement on the goaltender front this week in the WHL. And it could be that the Prince Albert Raiders will be in the middle of the wheeling and dealing. At present, the Raiders have sophomore Dave Aime, who turns 18 on Dec. 18, and freshman Steven Stanford, 17, as their goaltenders. But if GM Donn Clark wants some experience in goal there are a few ’tenders available. There have been some other GMs at Raiders games of late and they no doubt have had some good deals to offer him. Perhaps even some ocean-front property in Arizona. . . . Kelowna GM Bruce Hamilton watched the Blades and Raiders play twice last week, while Vancouver assistant GM Craig Bonner took in one of the games. Everett GM Doug Soetaert also was to have watched a game but apparently he didn’t make it. . . . Hamilton is sure to tell you he was just watching his son, 16-year-old Curtis, who is working to crack the Blades’ lineup. But the Rockets also have two veteran goaltenders, Kris Westblom, 20, and Torrie Jung, 18, who can play in this league. . . . Everett is trying to find a place for G David Reekie, 20, because he won’t want to back up Leland Irving, who will be returning from the Calgary Flames’ camp shortly. . . . As for the Giants, well, history has shown us that if there are trade winds blowing, Bonner will be somewhere in the vicinity. . . . The Raiders already have three 20-year-olds — D Jeff May, D Mike Gauthier and D John Flatters. However, Flatters may be out for a bit with some kind of an injury picked up late last week. And, besides, does Clark really want to go deep into the season with three 20-year-old defencemen?
