The Everett Silvertips are going to be faced with some tough decisions before the WHL’s annual 20-year-old game plays out. With the return of C Dan Gendur from the Vancouver Canucks’ rookie camp, the Silvertips have four 20-year-olds on their roster — RW Brandon Campos, G David Reekie and LW Brennan Sonne being the others. As well, Everett likely will get back LW Ondrej Fiala and D Dane Crowley from NHL camps, which would give it six 20-year-olds, three above the maximum. . . . Gendur had seven points in 13 games with the Cougars and added 42 points in 48 games with the Silvertips. . . . The WHL deadline by which teams must declare their three 20-year-olds is Oct. 11; the Edmonton Oil Kings are allowed to keep five which has been standard of late for WHL expansion franchises. . . .
If there aren’t already, there are going to be some capable 20-year-old goaltenders come available in the WHL over the next few days. The Moose Jaw Warriors still have Joey Perricone and Kurt Jory on their roster and you know that a team isn’t going to go into a season with two 20-year-old goaltenders. . . . The Kamloops Blazers still have four goaltenders on their roster. They will choose between Dustin Butler, 20, and Justin Leclerc, 18, as the starter and then take one of two 16-year-olds, Jon Groenheyde or James Priestner, as the backup. D Ryan White, 20, has been perhaps the best player in the Blazers’ camp and exhibition schedule and it’s believed that GM/head coach Dean Clark is leaning towards keeping him, D Ryan Bender and C Brock Nixon as the 20s. . . . The Blazers acquired Butler from the Portland Winter Hawks on Oct. 3 and all he did was set a single-season franchise record with seven shutouts. He went 33-20-2-0 with a 2.81 GAA and a .879 save percentage in Kamloops. . . . As well, Everett is likely going to be looking at moving Reekie, who, at 20, isn’t going to want to play second-fiddle to Leland Irving, once the latter returns from the Calgary Flames’ camp. . . .
Everett has reassigned F Cameron Abney, 16, to the North Delta Devils of the junior B Pacific International league. An undrafted list player from Aldergrove, B.C., Abney scored one goal in the preseason. . . . Abney’s departure left Everett’s roster at 31, but seven of those are in pro camps. . . .
Add two, subtract three. Such is life with the Prince Albert Raiders. They got D Mike Gauthier, 20, and F Ryan DePape, 19, back from NHL camps but sent D Shane Malone, 18, home to Nanaimo, B.C., to await reassignment, sent LW Jorden Iron, 16, to the midget AAA Beardy’s Blackhawks, and released RW Jarrid Dowhay, 20. . . . Gauther played for the Toronto Maple Leafs at a rookie camp in Kitchener, Ont., while DePape was in Yellowknife at the Edmonton Oilers’ rookie camp. Both are expected to practise with the Raiders on Wednesday. . . . D Jeff May, 20, is the only Raiders player still in pro camp. He is with the Minnesota Wild rookies at a tournament in Traverse City, Mich. . . . Malone had three assists and 37 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Raiders last season, while Dowhay, who is from Prince Albert, had six points and 38 penalty minutes in 57 games. . . . The moves leave the Raiders’ roster at 27, including two goaltenders and 11 defencemen. . . .
The Tri-City Americans have assigned D Paul Levarsky, 18, to the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials and F Brendan Shinnimin, 16, to the MJHL’s Selkirk Steelers. At the same time, the Americans lost C Taylor Procyshen to a one-game suspension for a spearing major and game misconduct incurred Sunday against Everett. . . .
The Vancouver Giants got back D Mike Berube (Edmonton Oilers) and D Juraj Valach (San Jose Sharks) from NHL free-agent tryouts, and also released C Jonathan Milhouse, 18. . . . The Vancouver Province reports that Craig Bonner, the Giants’ assistant GM/assistant coach, is heading out on a scouting trip. The Province’s Steve Ewen writes: “The Giants won't say where he's going. Such a move has often preceded a trade. Vancouver is thought to be looking for a defenceman.” . . .
The Regina Pats have three imports on their roster; the Tri-City Americans only have one. With teams having to be down to two by the end of next week, perhaps a deal is in the offing? Regina has to decide between Latvian RW Kaspars Saulietis, Czech C Rudolf Cerveny, 18, and Italian LW Marco Insam, 18. Saulietis, 20, was acquired from the Kelowna Rockets last season, while the other two were selected in the CHL’s 2007 import draft. The options facing the Pats look like this — Saulietis, as a 20-year-old import, is a two-spotter, but he has WHL experience. Cerveny has been fighting an ankle injury. Insam is well-acclimated, having spent three seasons at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask. . . . However, none of the trio scored a goal in the Pats’ first five preseason games. . . . The Americans, meanwhile, selected Czech C Petr Stoklasa, 18, in the 2007 import draft and he is with them. But they have already released Czech D Josef Tichy, a 6-foot-6, 230-pounder whose skating, they felt, wasn’t at a WHL level. . . .
Regina has 29 players left on its roster after assigning three skaters Tuesday. RW Brett Miller is off to the midget AAA Saskatoon Blazers, RW Kyle Mulder heads for the midget AAA Winnipeg Thrashers, and LW Kent Sauter will join the SJHL’s Nipawin Hawks. Miller, 16, was the 14th player taken in the 2006 bantam draft, while Mulder was an eight-rounder. Sauter is the son of former WHL coach Doug Sauter, who now is GM and head coach of the Central league’s Oklahoma City Blazers. . . .
The Moose Jaw Warriors got RW Brady Calla, 19, back from the Florida Panthers’ rookie team but he returned with a groin injury. The Warriors are waiting to hear from the Panthers just how badly Calla is injured. He was playing for their rookie team at a tournament in Kitchener, Ont. . . .
The Lethbridge Hurricanes, who earlier Tuesday dealt D Todd Panchyson to the Portland Winter Hawks, have trimmed D Alex Theriau, 15, and D Nic Knudsen, 20, from their roster. Theriau was Lethbridge’s first pick in the 2007 bantam draft so obviously will be kept on its 50-man list.
