Tuesday . . .

RW Ken Petkau has told Richard Doerksen, the WHL’s vice-president, hockey, that he isn’t interested in playing in the WHL. Petkau left the Chilliwack Bruins on Oct. 3, saying he was retiring. He later was claimed by the Vancouver Giants. By that time, however, he was in Oklahoma City on a tryout with the Central league’s Blazers. But he wasn’t allowed to play there as he hadn’t cleared WHL waivers. Doerksen spoke with Petkau this week and the two will speak again early next week. “That gives him a week to collect his thoughts about what he wants to do down the road,” Doerksen told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. “Everything was done above board.” Doerksen said Petkau won’t play this week but added he could practise with the Giants “if he chose to do that.” . . .

Two former WHLers ran for city council in Medicine Hat’s civic election on Monday. Jeremy Thompson, who played for Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Tri-City and Moose Jaw, placed sixth, with the top eight getting positions on council. He is a brother to former WHLer Rocky Thompson, now an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oil Kings. . . . Brian Varga, who played for Medicine Hat and Regina, finished 10th and didn’t win a seat on council.
