The WHL has suspended Vancouver Giants super-pest Garet Hunt for one game after he was involved in his third fight of the season right off the opening faceoff of a game. The third time was Sunday when he battled RW Brady Calla of the visiting Kamloops Blazers a couple of seconds into the first period. . . . It would seem that the WHL, a league that condones fighting, now is trying to legislate when those fights can, and can’t, take place. . . . Memo to Hunt: Best check in with the WHL office prior to games to find out at what time the embargo on fighting has been lifted. . . .
Spectators can watch for the Zamboni to scrape the centre of the ice prior to shootouts. Apparently, the WHL informed all 22 teams this week that the procedure would be changed, effective immediately. Prior to this, linesmen had attempted to clean the centre of the ice with scrapers. . . .
WEDNESDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS
In Edmonton, F Carter Smith’s goal at 18:54 of the third period gave the Red Deer Rebels a 4-3 victory over the Oil Kings. . . . Smith, 19, joined the Rebels on Tuesday from the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers. He has previous WHL experience with the Everett Silvertips and Moose Jaw Warriors. . . . The Rebels (6-15-4-1) had lost three in row. . . . Edmonton (9-10-1-3) has lost three straight. . . . It’s like getting caught with the ugliest woman in Red Deer, standing on the street corner holding hands. That’s what tonight was like. But you know what? It takes balls to stand there and do that.” . . . LW Brennan Sonne and D Matt Strong, acquired Monday from Everett, made their Red Deer debuts. . . .
In Calgary, G Dan Spence blocked 21 shots for the shutout as the Hitmen
blanked the Seattle Thunderbirds, 3-0. . . . It was the first shutout this
season, and the eighth of his career, for Spence. . . . Spence earned his 52nd career victory with the Hitmen, tying him with Justin Pogge for third on the franchise’s all-time list. Brent Krahn (74) is No. 1. . . . Calgary took control of this one with second-period goals 16 seconds part by D Paul Postma and LW Bosthan Golicic. . . . Rohac may have scored the game-winner, but shootout goals don’t count in individual stats so his three-game point streak ended. . . . In Medicine Hat, F Michael MacAngus scored a power-play goal with five
seconds left in the third period to give the Regina Pats a 3-2 victory over
the Tigers. . . . The Pats (16-8-0-0) have won four of their last five games. . . . The Tigers (13-8-2-0) have lost five of six. They also have lost four of their last five home games. . . . Last season, Medicine Hat was 8-0 versus Regina, including a four-game playoff sweep. . . . Regina got first-period goals from F Jared Jagow, who became ill during the game, and Spencer Fraipont, a defenceman by trade who was moved up due to a lack of forwards. . . . Medicine Hat tied it with third-period goals five minutes apart from D Mark Isherwood and F Tyler Ennis. . . . Ennis was serving hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct minors when MacAngus scored his ninth goal of the season. . . . Regina played without four veteran forwards — Troy Ofukany and Josh Elder were healthy scratches, while Kirt Hill was ill. Levi Lind, meanwhile, has left the team and is expected to join the SJHL’s Melville Millionaires.

Wheat Kings a 5-4 victory over the Raiders. . . . Calvert was the seventh

In Kennewick, Wash., the Americans erased a 2-1 deficity and doubled the Prince George Cougars, 4-2. . . . Prince George G Tommy Targaglione made 36 saves for the second night in a row. On Tuesday, the Cougars lost 4-1 to the Chiefs in Spokane. . . . The Cougars (9-15-0-0) have lost six straight and visit the Americans again on Friday. . . . Tri-City (15-5-0-0) outshot the Cougars, 40-17, including 15-2 in the second period. . . .
