The Red Deer Rebels have acquired G Darcy Kuemper, 17, from the Spokane Chiefs for a 2009 seventh-round bantam draft pick. Kuemper, who is with the midget AAA Saskatoon Blazers, was the 45th pick in the 2005 draft. . . .
Canada’s national junior team finalized its roster Thursday morning and seven WHL players were released, meaning they will be rejoining their teams and almost certainly will be playing this weekend. . . . D Ty Wishart and LW Dana Tyrell (Prince George Cougars), G Leland Irving and C Zach Hamill (Everett Silvertips), G Tyson Sexsmith (Vancouver Giants), D Keaton Ellerby (Moose Jaw Warriors), and C Ryan White (Calgary Hitmen) all got the bad news Thursday morning. . . . Team Canada leaves Friday for Europe and a precompetition camp. The 2008 World Junior Championship opens Dec. 26 in Pardubice and Liberec, Czech Republic. WHLers on the team are defencemen Karl Alzner (Calgary), Thomas Hickey (Seattle Thunderbirds), Logan Pyett (Regina Pats) and Luke Schenn (Kelowna Rockets), and forwards Zach Boychuk (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Colton Gillies (Saskatoon Blades), Riley Holzapfel (Moose Jaw) and Brandon Sutter (Red Deer Rebels).
