May day, May day

WHL trade deadline: Thursday, 2 p.m. Calgary time

ON THE MOVE (since Jan. 1):
Players: 26
Bantam draft picks: 6
Conditional bantam draft picks: 2

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have added D Jeff May, but they appear to have paid a steep price for a 20-year-old who hasn’t played since November and whose WHL career will be over when this season ends. In return for May, the Prince Albert Raiders received LW Brent Martin, 15, C Robbie Ciolfi, 16, and a 2008 second-round bantam draft pick. . . . Martin, the 53rd pick in the 2007 draft, has 28 points, including seven goals, in 28 games with the St. Albert Raiders of the Alberta Midget Hockey League. He is from Spruce Grove, Alta. . . . Ciolfi, from Lethbridge, plays for his hometown Y’s Men Titans in the Alberta midget league. He has 22 points, 10 of them goals, in 24 games. . . . May, who returned to the Raiders from pro tryouts with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and their AHL affiliate, the Houston Aeros, has 20 points, 19 of them assists, in 25 games with the Raiders. He hasn’t played since suffering a shoulder injury Nov. 24. However, he has been given a clean bill of health and should play this weekend. May is a workhorse and will really help the Hurricanes on the back end. He had never been injured previous and, in fact, had played every game of the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. . . . The Hurricanes felt a pressing need to add a veteran defenceman after losing Paul MacDonald (broken wrist). They had room to add a 20-year-old after F Luke Wiens suffered a shoulder injury. He is facing season-ending surgery. . . . There could be some fallout from this deal, too, as the Vancouver Giants were believed to be in hot pursuit of May. They badly want a 20-year-old defenceman and now will be looking elsewhere.
