From The Daily News of Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008 . . . .
Andrew Milne is back in the game.
The Daily News has learned that Milne, a former assistant coach with the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, will be named to the first head-coaching post of his career today.
Milne, 29, will be introduced Thursday as the head coach of the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles. He replaces Bob Miller, who is stepping aside to pursue a business opportunity and, in fact, is likely to end up in Kamloops.
Milne, who is from St. Albert, Alta., was in his second season on the Blazers’ coaching staff when he left the club Dec. 13. At the time, the Blazers issued a one-sentence press release announcing his departure.
Milne’s contract with the Blazers ran through 2008-09. He and the Blazers’ new ownership group completed negotiations on a contract settlement last week. Because that has been settled, Milne is free to move on.
Neither Blazers majority owner Tom Gaglardi nor Milne has chosen to talk about what happened. All Milne has said since leaving the Blazers is: “We agreed to disagree.”
Milne couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday night.
The Eagles are 17-24-0-5 and in sixth place in the AJHL’s South Division. They have lost eight in a row and, in fact, haven’t won since beating the visiting Olds Grizzlys 5-2 on Dec. 11.
Milne, whose contract with the Eagles will take him through the end of this season, was in Calgary and watched them fall 3-1 to the Canucks on Tuesday. He is scheduled to make his head-coaching debut on Friday when the Lloydminster Bobcats visit Canmore.
The Eagles are home to the Grande Prairie Storm, under the leadership of former Prince George Cougars head coach Mike Vandekamp, on Saturday.
