Sunday's serving . . .

Trade deadline: Thursday, 3 p.m. Calgary time

The Chilliwack Bruins have added F Randy McNaught from the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers. McNaught, 17, was acquired from the Portland Winter Hawks prior to the expansion draft that helped stock Chilliwack’s roster. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder had five points and 54 penalty minutes in 25 games with Nanaimo. . . . The Bruins also have decided to keep D Scott Ramsay on their roster. A fourth-round pick in the 2006 bantam draft, Ramsay was called up to fill in during the Christmas stretch. . . .

The Regina Pats have been rebuilding, it seems, since they played host to the 2001 Memorial Cup. But now that they are into their 90th anniversary season general manager Brent Parker has seen enough. He has swung three deals since New Year’s Day as he quickly turned a pretty decent hockey team into one that is going to be awfully hard to play against.
1. He acquired D Ryan Bender, 20, and D Victor Bartley, 19, from the Kamloops Blazers for D Nick Ross, 18, D Spencer Fraipoint, 19, and a 2008 fourth-round bantam pick;
2. He acquired D Dallas Jackson, 18, from the Red Deer Rebels for LW Troy Ofukany, 20, and D Juraj Valach, 18; and,
3. He acquired RW J.D. Watt, 20, and RW Scott Doucet, 19, from Red Deer for C Cody Gross, 18, and RW Brett Miller, 16.
The Pats, who have been close to the top for the last couple of seasons, have an opportunity to get to the top rung and Parker chose to maximize it.
“We want to do whatever we can to give our fans a product that they can be excited about,” Parker told Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post. “I’ve said it a lot of times, junior hockey is a very cyclical thing so when you have that opportunity my philosophy and our philosophy as an organization is we’re going to try to take a run at it if we can. Hopefully we’ve given ourselves that opportunity.”
If you look at the moves Parker has made, you realize that he is looking past the regular season. He has added a whole lot of experience with Bender, Bartley, Doucet and Watt. These also are players who are big and strong and should pay dividends in the marathon that is the playoff run.
“We felt we were competitive (before the deals),” Parker told Harder. “We just felt we had to be harder to play against. Down the stretch and come playoff time, that’s where you win. You have to play well as a team and be gritty and (have) character. That’s what gives you success.”
You’ve got to think, too, that Parker may not be done. The trade deadline arrives Thursday afternoon and with what he has done since New Year’s Day, you’ve got to think he’d be willing to pay a price to bring in a proven scorer.
In fact, Harder is reporting that the Pats may be close to acquiring Swedish F Robin Figren from the Edmonton Oil Kings.

And there’s this from sports editor Jim Swanson of the Prince George Citizen: “Perhaps, all it took was a slip by play-by-play voice Ron St. Clair early in Sunday's game to foreshadow what was to come in Portland. ‘Poulter, from the far hash pipe . . .’ St. Clair quickly corrected himself to ‘hash marks,’ but the tone was set — this season is quickly going up in smoke.” . . .
