The WHL has yet to post an all-encompassing list on its website as it has done in the past, so perhaps that isn't going to happen. Anyway, here's what I have compiled. . . .
ON THE MOVE (since Jan. 1):
Trades made: 22
Players moved: 42
Bantam draft picks: 20
Conditional bantam draft picks: 4
The Red Deer Rebels sent F Brennan Sonne, 20, to the Edmonton Oil Kings for a 2009 seventh-round draft pick. Sonne, in his third WHL season, had 11 points in 34 games with the Everett Silvertips and Red Deer. On Nov. 12, Red Deer dealt LW Clayton Bauer, 20, and a 2008 sixth-round pick to Everett for Sonne and D Matt Strong, 17. Strong was dealt to the Chilliwack Bruins on Monday for LW Colby Kulhanek, 18. . . .
The Chilliwack Bruins dealt D Matt McCue, 19, to the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 2009 fourth-round draft pick. McCue was acquired by the Bruins from the Spokane Chiefs last season for D Stephane Lenoski, 20, and a 2007 sixth-round pick. . . . In 74 games with Chilliwack, McCue had 11 points and 182 penalty minutes. With the Bruins in their second season of existence, he holds the franchise record for penalty mintues. . . .
The Medicine Hat Tigers sent D Trevor Glass, 19, to the Spokane Chiefs for two bantam picks — a third-rounder in 2008 and a second-rounder in 2010. . . . Glass, the 10th overall pick in the 2003 bantam draft, was in his fourth season with the Tigers. He had 11 points in 35 games with the Tigers this season. . . . Glass could be a key acquisition for the Chiefs. He has played on a winner with the Tigers and was extremely popular in the their dressing room. . . .
The Vancouver Giants traded F Phil Gervais, 17, to the Portland Winter Hawks for a 2009 fifth-rounder. Gervais had two assists in 16 games with Vancouver. The Giants had acquired Gervais from the Swift Current Broncos for a 2008 third-round pick on Oct. 10. The Broncos took him 52nd overall in the 2005 bantam draft. . . .
The Prince George Cougars picked up D Cody Hobbs, 18, from the Chilliwack Bruins for a 2008 seventh-round selection. The 6-foot-0, 205-pound Hobbs had eight assists and 34 penalty minutes in 32 games with the Bruins. He is from Prince Albert. Hobbs joined the Bruins in the middle of last season from the midget AAA Prince Albert Mintos program. . . .
The Swift Current Broncos acquired G Mark Guggenberger, 18, from the Portland Winter Hawks for a 2009 conditional pick. Guggenberger, 6-foot3 and 205 pounds, is from Richfield, Minn. He was dropped from Portland’s roster in mid-November and placed on its suspended list. In three games with the Winter Hawks, he was 1-2-0-0 with a 4.00 GAA and a .891 save percentage.
The Prince George Cougars sent D Jesse Dudas, 19, and RW Colin Foley, 15, to the Swift Current Broncos for G Ian Curtis, 17. . . . The oft-injured Dudas has 21 points, including 19 assists, and 68 penalty minutes in 29 games this season. Last season, in 67 games, he had 54 points. He was taken by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the sixth round, 159th overall, of the 2006 NHL draft. . . . Foley, who is from Coronach, Sask., was the 120th pick in the 2007 bantam draft. Foley presently is at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask. . . . Curtis, 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, is from Abbotsford. He had gotten into 11 games in his rookie season with the Broncos, going 4-2-0-0 with a 3.37 GAA and a .862 save percentage. He was the first goaltender taken in the 2005 bantam draft when the Broncos took him 23rd overall. NHL Central Scouting’s midterm rankings show him 14th among North American goaltenders eligible for the 2008 NHL draft. . . . The Cougars later assigned G Tommy Tartaglione, 19, to the BCHL's Surrey Eagles. . . .
The Kootenay Ice got D Eric Frere, 19, from the Calgary Hitmen for a 2008 fifth-round pick. Calgary had acquired Frere from the Moose Jaw Warriors on Dec. 6, 2006, for a 2007 fifth-round pick. This season, he had eight points and 51 penalty minutes in 40 games with Calgary.
TRADE CHATTER: Three players who were at home awaiting trades are still waiting. C Matt Hallick, 18, asked the Brandon Wheat Kings for a deal, while LW Tayler Jordan, 17, did the same with the Portland Winter Hawks, as did RW Josh Schappert, 18, with the Seattle Thunderbirds. . . . Not one of the three players was moved at the deadline. . . . Hallick is with the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits, while Jordan now plays for the midget AAA Tisdale, Sask., Trojans. . . . No word yet on whether RW Brent Ottmann, whose rights went from the Prince Albert Raiders to the Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday, will report. He had 41 points, including 16 goals, and 119 penalty minutes in 37 games with the SJHL’s Nipawin Hawks at the time of the deal. . . .
TRADER BOB WATCHES: One of the teams that didn’t make a move was the Tri-City Americans. That may have caught some people by surprise, considering that GM Bob Tory frequently is referred to as Trader Bob. “Last I looked, we were second in the (U.S.) division and playing well,” Tory told Annie Fowler of the Tri-City Herald. “We feel we have our program stabilized and we aren’t going to pay exorbitant prices for a player. We will make trades when the price is right. We feel sometimes a trade can destroy a culture or chemistry in the dressing room. We are happy with our team.”
THE PRICE WASN’T RIGHT: Kootenay Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth was in the market for help on defence but he wasn’t prepared to pay what he felt were the steep prices being asked. “Astronomical,” he told Jeff Bromley of the Kootenay NewsAdvertiser, referring to the asking prices. “We don’t have the assets to make the big deal and give up young prospects like some of the other teams do. We just don’t have the depth.” . . . Chynoweth settled for adding D Eric Frere, 19, from the Calgary Hitmen and D Zach Sim, 19, from the Prince Albert Raiders, both for fifth-round picks in the 2008 draft. . . .
IT’S OVER: No one summed up things any better than Lorne Molleken, the general manager and head coach of the Saskatoon Blades. “I’m tired. I haven’t slept. It’s time to go home to bed,” Molleken told Cory Wolfe of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. . . . Amen!
