LW Jamie Benn of the Kelowna Rockets is the CHL’s player of the week. He had three goals and six assists in three games. The Kamloops Blazers, having traded away captain Ryan Bender and alternates Brock Nixon and Victor Bartley earlier this month, were busy handing out letters Tuesday. C Scott Wasden, 19, is the team’s new captain, with C C.J. Stretch, 18, and RW Brady Calla, 19, as full-time alternates. D Nick Ross, 18, will wear an ‘A’ at home games, with D Mike Gauthier, 20, getting it on the road. . . . Wasden, Calla, Ross and Gauthier were all acquired in trades this season. . . . According to interim head coach Greg Hawgood, “These choices came about as a result of a team vote.”———
“The first day I was on the top-20 list on the WHL website, my parents printed off the page,” Kelowna Rockets C Colin Long tells Doyle Potenteau of the Kelowna Daily Courier. “They were pretty excited because they thought it was just a fluke and I wouldn’t be on there for very long.” . . . Long now leads the WHL’s points race by five over LW Mark Santorelli of the Chilliwack Bruins.———
TUESDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:In Cranbrook, D Karl Alzner’s goal at 3:37 of OT gave the Calgary Hitmen a 2-1 victory over the Kootenay Ice. . . . The Hitmen (33-13-1-3) had lost their last two games. But they now have won seven straight on the road. Calgary, which leads the Eastern Conference, also moved into a tie with the idle Spokane Chiefs and Vancouver Giants for first place overall. . . . The Ice (28-15-4-1) is 3-0-1-1 in its last five outings. . . . Calgary RW Carson McMillan forced OT when he scored on a slapshot with 1:07 left in the third period. . . . The Ice had nursed a 1-0 lead since 9:27 of the second period when C Tylan Stephens scored. . . . The Hitmen held a 46-28 edge in shots on goal but Ice G Nathan Lieuwen was superb in his second career start. . . .
In Medicine Hat, the Tigers maintained their perfect record against the Edmonton Oil Kings with a 6-1 victory. . . . The Tigers are 5-0 against the expansion Oil Kings and Ryan Holfeld has been in the Medicine Hat net for all five games. . . . The Tigers (27-17-4-1) moved into sixth in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the idle Brandon Wheat Kings. . . . The Oil Kings (16-24-4-6) have one victory in their last nine road games. . . . Holfeld lost his shutout bid with 10 seconds left in the third period. . . . The Tigers got two goals from F Wacey Hamilton. . . . Medicine Hat outshot the visitors, 40-17. . . .
In Moose Jaw, C Matt Tassone had two goals and an assist to help the Swift Current Broncos to a 7-4 victory over the Broncos. . . . The Broncos (24-20-0-5) had lost three of four going into this one. They are 3-0 versus the Warriors this season, although the other two had gone to extra time. . . . The Broncos are eighth in the Eastern Conference, five points back of seventh-place Brandon. . . . The Warriors (26-14-4-4) had a five-game winning streak snapped. . . . C Levi Nelson had a goal and two helpers for the Broncos. . . . C Ryley Grantham scored twice for the Warriors.
