In Calgary, G Travis Yonkman stopped 27 shots as the Swift Current Broncos beat the Hitmen, 2-0. . . . The Broncos (33-20-0-5) have won 10 straight games, the longest winning streak in the WHL this season. They have moved into sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, and are only four points behind the East Division-leading Regina Pats. . . . Yonkman posted his third shutout of the season and the fifth of his career. . . . The Hitmen (39-15-1-3), who have lost two straight, remain atop the Eastern Conference standings. . . . According to the WHL website, C David Stieler scored both goals, giving him 19 on the season. He opened the scoring at 13:09 of the third period and added an empty-netter late in the third. . . . However, it seems the game’s first goal actually was scored by RW Keegan Dansereau, who was acquired from Calgary earlier in the season. It was his 18th goal of the season. . . . The Broncos have outscored the opposition 41-16 over the last 10 games during which time they also have posted four shutouts. . . . Yonkman and Mark Guggenberger are riding a 163-minute shutout streak. . . . The Broncos next play Wednesday when the Hitmen visit Swift Current. . . .
In Vancouver, the Giants unleashed a 50-shot barrage as they beat the Prince George Cougars, 4-2. . . . Vancouver had a 24-2 edge in shots after one period. . . . The Giants (37-13-1-5) lead the B.C. Division, so are the Western Conference’s second seed. . . . The Cougars (15-38-1-3) have lost five in a row. . . . RW Spencer Machacek had a goal and two assists for Vancouver. . . . Gotta think Vancouver head coach Don Hay wasn’t thrilled when Machacek, while leading 2-0 in the second period, tried to score on a between-the-legs shot. “If you’re going to try a play like that you should score,” Hay told media after the game. . . . Wonder if Hay will have his skaters practising that play Monday? . . . . The Cougars got two third-period power-play goals to make things a bit interesting. . . .
In Prince Albert, G Joe Caligiuri stopped 17 shots as the Brandon Wheat Kings blanked the Raiders, 3-0. . . . Caligiuri had allowed 17 goals in his previous 133 minutes of action. He has two shutouts this season. . . . Brandon held a 36-17 edge in shots on goal, including 20-3 in the second period. . . . Brandon got second-periood goals from forwards Jay Fehr and Andrew Clark, the latter scoring in his second game back from a broken leg. . . . Brandon (33-19-2-2) moved into a tie with Moose Jaw for seventh in the Eastern Conference. . . . The Raiders (19-34-3-2) are 11th, 27 points out of a playoff spot with 15 games remaining. . . .
In Medicine Hat, the Tigers dropped the Red Deer Rebels, 6-3. . . . The Tigers (33-18-5-2) are fourth in the Eastern Conference, two points behind Lethbridge and Regina and one up on the Kootenay Ice. . . . The Rebels (16-36-4-2) are 12th in the conference. . . . LW Tyler Ennis scored twice for Medicine Hat, giving him 35 goals this season. Medicine Hat forwards Yashar Farmanara and Daine Todd each scored their 20th goal. . . . The Tigers broke a 2-2 tie with four second-period goals. . . .
In Kennewick, Wash., C Taylor Procyshen scored twice to help the Tri-City Americans to a 7-3 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks. . . . The Americans (42-12-1-2) have the WHL’s best record and a four-point lead over the Spokane Chiefs in the U.S. Division. . . . Tri-City has won seven in a row. . . . Portland (9-48-1-1) has 13 games left in a dismal season. The Winter Hawks have lost 14 straight games. . . . D T.J. Fast had three assists for the Americans. . . . F Blair Macaulay scored the Americans’ 20th shorthanded goal early in the second period. Yes, they lead the WHL in that department. . . . Tri-City LW Colton Yellow Horn scored his WHL-leading 43rd goal. . . . Procyshen has seven goals in 12 games since returning from a concussion that cost him about two months of the season. . . .
In Kamloops, C Zach Hamill’s 20th goal, on a power play at 3:46 of overtime, gave the Everett Silvertips a 2-1 victory over the Blazers. . . . The Silvertips (32-25-0-2) have won three in a row. They are fifth in the Western Conference, a point ahead of Seattle. . . . The Blazers (26-28-2-2) are seventh, a point ahead of the Chilliwack Bruins, who hold three games in hand. . . .
In Seattle, G Riku Helenius stopped 25 shots to lead the Thunderbirds to a 2-0 victory over the Spokane Chiefs. . . . Helenius has three shutouts. . . . It was the first time in seven games that Seattle beat Spokane. . . . The Chiefs (39-12-1-4) have lost their last two games and are four points behind Tri-City. . . . Seattle (29-18-5-2) has won four in a row and is sixth, one point behind Everett and five in arrears of Kelowna. . . . Seattle clinched a playoff spot with the victory. . . . The Chiefs lost 7-2 to visiting Tri-City and then, with mountain passes closed because of heavy snowfall, were forced into a 10-hour ride that went through Portland in order to reach Seattle. . . . F Greg Scott’s 25th goal, in the first period, stood up as the winner. . . . Seattle has put up back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season; G Jacob DeSerres blanked Portland 3-0 on Saturday. . . . Injuries limited Seattle to 10 forwards, so defencemen Sean Acolatse, Steve Chaffin and Brenden Dillon took turns up front. . . .
