Thursday notes . . .

Having spent 17 years working at the Leader-Post in Regina, I saw a fair number of games in the Crushed Can in Moose Jaw. Which is why when someone asks if I have a favourite WHL player, I always provide one answer: Theoren Fleury. . . . There hasn’t been a player in the WHL who wanted to play in the NHL more than did Fleury. While with the Warriors, he provided more in the way of entertainment than did any other player in the WHL at the time. . . . And if you’re wondering how he’s doing, check out this story by Greg Harder from today’s Leader-Post. . . . It’s great to read that Fleury appears to have both feet planted firmly on the ground again. . . .

THURSDAY NOTES: C Andrew Clark (broken leg) is expected to return to the Brandon Wheat Kings’ lineup Friday night against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. Clark, who has missed 19 games, took part in a full-contact practice Thursday for the first time since being injured. He had 39 points in 30 games when he was hurt. . . . Brandon remains without D Chad Erb (shoulder), D Theran Yeo (ankle) and D Matt McCue (WHL suspension). . . . It turns out that Vancouver Giants C James Wright may not have been a healthy scratch on Wednesday in Portland. The Giants were awaiting test results Thursday but they now are saying Wright may have mononucleosis, which would sideline him for an indefinite period. . . . The Everett Silvertips have been without three veteran defenceman – Mike Alexander (shoulder), Taylor Ellington (foot) and Graham Potuer (flu). So they have brought in D Brenden Stephen from the junior B Princeton, B.C., Posse. He’s a 6-foot-7 defender from Vanderhoof, B.C., who has 10 points and 11 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Posse. . . . Everett C Vitaly Karamnov (shoulder) also could return this weekend after sitting for five games. . . . If you want an impressive stat, consider that the Tri-City Americans are 7-10-1-1 when trailing after two periods. . . . Rob Brown of the Brooks, Alta., Bulletin reports: “City council took the plunge Monday night, greenlighting a $19.1-million plan for a new 1,700 seat arena. Council announced a total project cost of $19,160,000, with the building being $16,145,000, site development $1,815,000 and utility servicing of $1.2 million.” Hey, Moose Jaw, are you paying attention? . . . The new building in Brooks should be ready in the fall of 2009. It will be home to the AJHL’s Bandits.
