The WHL is honouring Ruth (Grams) Pollock and Dr. Ian Hill as the 2007-08 recipients of the WHL Distinguished Service Award. These awards are presented annual to, according to a league statement, “an individual associated with the WHL who has made an extraordinary contribution over an extended period of time at the WHL Club or League level.” . . . Pollock began billeting players in Prince Albert in 1988-89 when grandson Troy Hjertaas made the Raiders. She has continued providing a home for players, sometimes three at a time, since then. . . . Dr. Hill has worked with the Regina Pats for 40 years and has attended somewhere over 2,000 WHL games. He is retiring at the end of this season. . . . Previous winners: Dr. Alfred Blue, the Seattle Thunderbirds club doctor of over 30 years; Doris Rubel, who served as the Kamloops Blazers’ billet co-ordinator for 38 years; Swift Current Broncos education advisor Colleen MacBean; and, Bob Ridley, the Medicine Hat Tigers’ long-time radio voice.
