LW Quinton Howden, the first pick in the 2007 WHL bantam draft, has joined the Moose Jaw Warriors for the remainder of the season. Howden, from Oak Bank, Man., spent this season with the midget AAA Eastman Selects, totaling 50 points, 23 of them goals, in 37 games. Last season, Howden had 197 points, including 121 goals, in 51 games with the bantam Springield Ice Hawks. . . . F Jesse Todd, 20, of the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks has committed to Merrimack College for next season. Todd, who turns 21 on March 11, was selected by the Kamloops Blazers with the129th pick of the 2002 WHL bantam draft. He had 70 points in 62 games with the Kodiaks this season. . . . Juha Metsola of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is the ADT CHL goaltender of the week. Metsola, a Finnish freshman, was 2-0-0-0 with one shutout. He came on in relief in the first game and stopped all 22 shots he faced and then put up a 26-save shutout to complete a perfect week. Two wins. One shutout. Zero goals-against. On the season, he is 17-5-0-1 with a 1.99 GAA and a .914 save percentage. . . . LW Josh Elder, 19, of the Regina Pats is waiting for the swelling to go down on his injured left knee so that the damage to the MCL can be evaluated. Right now, they’re saying he’ll beout for somewhere between six weeks and three months. . . . The Chilliwack Bruins have added D Brandon Manning, 17, to their roster from the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings, whose season ended Monday night. The Spruce Kings, by the way, held a 6-1 lead over Salmon Arm before giving up six unanswered goals and falling 7-6 in overtime. . . .

WEDNESDAY IN THE WHL:
In Edmonton, G Tyler Bunz, called up from the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders, stopped 23 shots to help the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 6-3 victory over the Oil Kings. . . . The Tigers (40-21-5-2) won their 40th game of the season, the fifth straight season they have accomplished that under GM/head coach Willie Desjardins. . . . The Tigers have won three straight and are tied for third in the Eastern Conference with the idle Lethbridge Hurricanes. . . . Medicine Hat went 8-0 against the expansion Oil Kings this season. . . . Edmonton (20-35-4-7) has lost four straight. . . . F Jeff Lee scored three third-period goals for the Oil Kings but it was too little, too late. Edmonton gave up five goals in the first period and actually trailed 6-0 at one point in the third. . . . Edmonton LW Brennan Sonne was involved in three fights and was gone after the third one, just 50 seconds into the third period. . . . By 11:06 of the first period, Sonne had danced twice with F John Stampohar. . . .

In Kelowna, G Tyson Sexsmith won his 40th game to help the Vancouver Giants to a 4-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. . . . The Giants (45-14-2-6) have won 45 games each of the last three seasons. . . . They are tied with the Tri-City Americans for first-place overall. The Americans have a game in hand. . . . The Rockets (35-24-2-6) have lost four straight at home and are sixth in the Western Conference, a point behind the idle Everett Silvertips. . . . Sexsmith faced 18 shots. . . . Vancouver C Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored twice for the Giants. . . . Kelowna C Colin Long scored his 28th goal. He leads the WHL with 95 points, two more than Chilliwack Bruins LW Mark Santorelli. . . .

In Prince George, Seattle F Greg Scott scored three straight second-period goals to lead the Thunderbirds to a 5-2 victory over the Cougars. . . . The Thunderbirds (38-21-5-2) have won seven of their last eight. They went 4-0 versus the Cougars, outscoring them 21-5. . . . The Cougars (18-45-1-3) fell 5-1 to Seattle on Tuesday. . . . Scott’s three goals — he has 37 this season — came in an 11:20 span and broke open what had been a 2-1 Seattle lead. . . . D Thomas Hickey drew an assist on each of Scott’s goals. . . . F Bud Holloway had a goal and two assists for Seattle. . . . Prince George G Real Cyr stopped 28 shots as he made his 11th straight start. . . . There was an interesting scrap with Seattle’s Benn Olson (6-foot-5, 217 pounds) going against Prince George’s Patrik Magnusson (6-foot-8, 250 pounds). . . .

In Spokane, D Jared Spurgeon had a goal and three assists and F Mitch Wahl had two goals and two assists to help the Chiefs to a 5-1 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks. . . . The Chiefs (45-14-1-5) have won three in a row and are two points behind the Tri-City Americans, who lead the WHL’s overall standings and the Western Conference. . . . Spokane is 7-0 against Portland and the two teams will meet twice more. . . . Portland (9-54-2-1) has lost 21 straight games. . . . Spokane C Chris Bruton had a goal and two helper. . . . Wahl has 20 goals; Bruton has 25. . . . Wahl has 10 points, four of them goals, in his last seven games. . . . The Chiefs scored on their first two shots, at 1:29 and 1:47 of the first period, sending Portland G Jordan White to an early shower. . . . G Kurtis Mucha came on in relief and stopped 40 shots. . . . Spokane’s Kevin Armstrong stopped 23 shots and now is 18-5-1-2. . . . Spokane scratched two forwards — Dustin Donaghy and Curtis Kelner — with flu-like symptoms. . . .

In Swift Current, C Zack Smith scored a shorthanded goal in OT to lift the Broncos to a 4-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings. . . . The decision created a three-way tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference where the Broncos (38-22-1-6), Wheat Kings (39-23-3-2) and Moose Jaw Warriors (35-18-6-7) all have 83 points. . . . Brandon went into the game 4-1 versus the Broncos this season. . . . Smith scored his 20th goal of the season with one second left in a delay-of-game penalty to D Eric Doyle. . . . Swift Current D Michael Wilson forced OT when he scored his sixth goal of the season with 44 seconds left in the third period and G Mark Guggenberger on the bench for the extra attacker. . . . Guggenberger finished with 33 saves, 14 more than Brandon’s Joe Caligiuri. . . . Brandon lists LW Tyler Dittmer (broken finger) and D Chad Erb (broken wrist) as out indefinitely. . . . Swift Current RW Dale Weise (separated shoulder) is out at least another week. . . .

In Red Deer, the Kootenay Ice struck for three power-play goals as they dumped the Rebels, 4-1. . . . The Ice (39-20-5-3) is fourth in the Eastern Conference, one point out of third. . . . Kootenay is 7-0 against Red Deer this season with one game remaining. They’ll play Friday in Cranbrook. A victory would give the Ice its 40th victory for a fourth straight season. . . . The Rebels (18-42-4-3) are 8-23-0-2 at home. . . . Kootenay held a 22-1 edge in shots on goal in the first period. . . . Red Deer G Morgan Clark stopped 37 shots, 10 more than Kootenay’s Kris Lazaruk. . . . F Dustin Sylvester got his 33rd goal of the season for the Ice, which was 3-for-6 on the PP; the Rebels were 0-for-4. . . . Red Deer C Brandon Sutter played in his 200th game.
