A sad farewell . . .

This is a sad, sad day in media circles throughout the WHL. Rick Moore, the long-time sports editor of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald, died Monday evening after a lengthy battle with cancer. . . . Rick was on the Warriors beat from the beginning but he meant far more to the community than a link between readers, fans and the hockey team. . . . He covered the Moose Jaw sporting scene like a blanket. He knew everyone in town. And you can bet that his smile will be missed. . . . Every writer who works in a WHL city and sits down at a keyboard today will do so with a heavy heart. But those of us who knew Rick are richer for it . . .

On the subject of the Warriors, three of their players are off to join pro teams. . . . C Riley Holzapfel, the team’s captain, is to join the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. He was a second-round pick by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2006 NHL draft. He signed with the Thrashers in August. . . . D Ty Wishart and LW Frazer McLaren are off to join the Worcester Sharks, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. Wishart, who joined the Warriors from the Prince George Cougars in January, was the 16th pick in the 2006 NHL draft. He was the WHL’s top scoring defenceman (67 points) this season. Fraser was a seventh-round pick in the 2007 NHL draft. He has used up his WHL eligibility. . . .

F Bud Holloway of the Seattle Thunderbirds is the Husky WHL player of the month for March. Holloway, 20, had 16 points in his last nine regular-season games. He was a third-round pick by the L.A. Kings in the 2006 NHL draft. . . .
