The Spokane Chiefs arrived in Kitchener, site of the 2008 Memorial Cup tournament, on Wednesday. The WHL champions have announced that “each game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will be available to all Comcast Subscribers on channel 78 as well as to Comcast Digital Cable Customers with the Sports Tier package on NHL Network channel 419.” . . . Games also will be available on radio (1510 KGA), with Mike Boyle calling the play. . . . And they will be available on the Internet at memorialcup.insinc.com. . . . Former WHLer Glenn Kulka, who now works in radio in Ottawa, is going to take a shot at mixed martial arts. Kulka went on to play in the CFL and had a stint as a pro wrestler after his days with the Medicine Hat Tigers, is scheduled to be part of MMA’s Freedom Fight: Title Quest on July 26 in Gatineau, Que. Kulka, 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, will get in the ring against super-heavyweight Wayne (X-Man) Xilon of Sudbury. . . . The Regina Leader-Post’s Greg Harder is reporting that Pats’ defenceman Logan Pyett, 19, “is close to signing a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the deal could be finalized as early as this week. Detroit needs to sign Pyett by June 1 or he’ll be eligible to re-enter the NHL draft (June 20-21 in Ottawa).” Pyett was the 212th selection in the 2006 draft and has since become an elite defenceman. . . . G Tommy Tartaglione, 20, who has played in the WHL with Vancouver, Regina and Prince George, was the 130th selection in the USHL’s draft on Wednesday. Tartaglione, who finished up the season with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles, was selected by the Omaha Lancers. . . . Among the 166 players taken in the USHL draft was F Shane McColgan of the under-18 Los Angeles Kings, who went 86th overall to the expansion Fargo Force. The Kelowna Rockets hold McColgan’s WHL rights, having taken him 13th overall in the 2008 bantam draft.
