From the department of terrific ideas: The WHL will open the regular season Sept. 18 with the Memorial Cup-champion Spokane Chiefs meeting the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook. Jeff Bromley of the Kootenay News Advertiser reports that the game is being played in honour of the late Ed Chynoweth, the former WHL president who owned the Ice. Kootenay, it turns out, was going to open by going home-and-home with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. But that was before the WHL came forward with an idea. “(The league) came to us as a family and said they’d like to do a tribute to Ed, in his memory,” Jeff Chynoweth, one of Ed’s two sons and the Ice’s general manager, told Bromley. “They wanted the first winners of the Ed Chynoweth Cup (WHL championship trophy), the Spokane Chiefs, against a big rival, which is also Ed’s team. So really, it’s a tribute to Ed.” . . . The game will be televised live by the folks at Shaw.

A native of Canora, Sask., he also played for the Kamloops Blazers, Swift Current Broncos, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Prince Albert Raiders. Severson, who lives in Spokane, spent the last two seasons playing in Germany..
