Blazers box

THE SCORE
Kamloops 5, Lethbridge 2

WHAT HAPPENED
The Blazers outworked the defending Eastern Conference champions from the
opening faceoff and were rewarded for the effort.

THE STANDINGS
The Blazers (8-8-0-2), who not that long ago had lost five in a row, take a
four-game winning streak into Prince George tonight. Kamloops is fifth in
the Western Conference, two points behind the Kelowna Rockets.

THE FRESHMAN
Kamloops C Jake Trask, a 17-year-old from Saskatoon, had a goal, his third,
and an assist, for his first WHL two-point night. He was between LW Shayne
Wiebe and RW Tyler Shattock on the Blazers’ best line.

THE CAGE
Kamloops D Linden Saip returned after a one-game absence. He played with a
full wire cage after a fistic exchange with Chilliwack Bruins F Dylen
McKinlay a week ago.

WE LOVE B.C.
Last season, the Hurricanes went 4-1 in B.C., with their Fab Four — Zach
Boychuk, Mitch Fadden, Dwight King and Colton Sceviour — combining for 37
points. This time around, Lethbridge is 1-1 and the Fab Four has 13 points,
but just three last night.

THE TRADE (ALMOST)
The Hurricanes acquired F Colton Sceviour last season from the Portland
Winter Hawks. That deal was made after talks between the Winter Hawks and
Blazers crumbled. The Blazers almost dealt D Keaton Ellerby to Portland but
that deal fell apart and Ellerby ended up going to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

THE VOICE
Kelly Moore, a former radio voice of the Blazers, handled the public address
announcements in relief of Bill O’Donovan, who has been ill.

THE CHOSEN FEW
Forwards Zach Boychuk and Colton Sceviour of the Hurricanes have been
selected to play for Team WHL against a Russian side in the ADT Challenge
games late next month. No Blazers were selected.

ON THE ROAD
Ryan Dawson, a local on-ice official who worked the lines last night, has
been selected to referee at the World Junior A Challenge, which begins
Sunday in Camrose, Alta. According to the Kamloops MInor Hockey
Association’s website, Jennifer Konicek will referee at the women’s under-18
Esso Nationals, which opens Wednesday in Napanee, Ont.

THE DAILY NEWS THREE STARS

1. RW Tyler Shattock, Kamloops. Power game and two goals.

2. LW Shayne Wiebe, Kamloops. Energy and three assists.

3. C Jake Trask, Kamloops. Two points, solid all-around.

NEXT UP
The Blazers meet the Cougars in Prince George tonight and then return home
to face the Chilliwack Bruins on Tuesday and the Cougars on Wednesday.
