Blazers box

THE SCORE
Kamloops 5, Calgary 1

WHAT HAPPENED
The Blazers brought their work boots to this one, beating the Hitmen all
over the ice, winning the one-on-one battles and winning the game.

THE STANDINGS
The Blazers (31-30-2-4) moved back into fifth place in the Western
Conference, one point ahead of the Seattle Thunderbirds (31-30-1-4), who
have a game in hand.

THE FAVOUR
The Calgary loss allowed the Vancouver Giants (55-7-1-3, 114 points) to pull
within two points of the Hitmen (56-9-3-1, 116) for first overall. The
Giants hold three games in hand. The teams meet Friday in Vancouver.

THE SEASON SERIES
The Hitmen, who won the season seriesd 2-1-0-0, had won the first two games
between these teams by a combined score of 14-3. In those games, Calgary was
3-10 on the PP; the Blazers were 0-9. In this one, the Hitmen were 1-8; the
Blazers were 1-5.

THE LEGENDS
When the Portland Winter Hawks visit on Friday, the Blazers will honour Andy
Clovechok, Zac Boyer and Stu MacGregor as Blazer Legends in a pregame
ceremony. Game time is 7 p.m.

THE SNIPER
F Joel Broda of the Hitmen scored his 50th goal on Tuesday in Prince George.
He became the first WHLer to reach 50 since LW Justin Keller did it with the
Kelowna Rockets in 2005-06. The last Calgaryian to do it? Pavel Brendl, in
1999-2000.

THE GOALTENDER
Calgary’s Martin Jones attended the Los Angeles Kings’ training camp as an
undrafted free agent and skated away with a three-year contract. He is
43-5-3-1 with a 2.14 GAA and a .913 save percentage.

THE HEALTHY SCRATCH
Sophomore D Kurt Torbohm was a healthy scratch for the third straight game.
The Kamloops coaching staff wants more physical play out of the Chase
native, a role that now is being filled by freshman Josh Caron, who has
played only 19 WHL games.

THE CENTRE
Colin Smith, who turns 16 on June 20, will spend the rest of the season with
the Blazers. The seventh overall pick in the 2008 bantam draft was with the
midget AAA Edmonton CAC Canadians.

2. LW Brendan Ranford, Kamloops. In the middle of things.

3. D Josh Caron, Kamloops. Has earned his playing time.
