In Brandon, the Wheat Kings lost 4-2 to the Swift Current Broncos. . . . Brandon went into the night having beaten the Broncos in seven straight games. . . . Attendance was a season-high 5,439. . . . A victory would have moved Brandon to within one point of Saskatoon, which lost 4-3 in Moose Jaw on Tuesday. . . . Brandon finishes up with a home-and-home series with Moose Jaw while the Blades play Prince Albert twice. . . . Broncos G Travis Yonkman stopped 35 shots and RW Keegan Dansereau had a goal and an assist. Both are from Saskatoon. . . . The Broncos also reached the 40-victory mark — so isn’t it about time someone offered GM/head coach Dean Chynoweth a new contract? . . . According to the Brandon Sun, the Broncos had lost nine straight games in Brandon, going back to Dec. 9, 2006. . . . The Wheat Kings honoured injured D Keith Aulie as the Shoppers Drug Mart Fans’ Choice Player of the Year award. That award is voted on by the fans and isn’t to be confused with the team’s player-of-the-year award, the recipient of which will be Brandon’s nominee as the WHL player of the year. Aulie is out indefinitely with a broken hand.

In Edmonton, the Oil Kings doubled the Kootenay Ice 4-2 to stay in control of the Eastern Conference’s eighth and final playoff spot. . . . Edmonton is two points ahead of Prince Albert and each team has two games remaining. . . . Edmonton goes home-and-home with Red Deer on Saturday and Sunday; Prince Albert does the same with Saskatoon on Friday and Saturday.

In Prince Albert, the Raiders edged the Regina Pats, 6-5. . . . The victory kept the Raiders two points behind the Edmonton Oil Kings in the race for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. . . . The loss eliminated Regina from playoff contention. . . . The Pats had 4-1 and 5-2 leads in that game. . . . RW Justin Bernhardt had a goal and three assists for the Raiders, who got a goal and two assists from D Jordan Rowley. . . . RW Justin Eberle had three goals for Regina, giving him 35 this season. . . . Prince Albert scored the game’s last four goals.

In Kelowna, F Mikael Backlund scored twice to lead the Rockets to a 6-2 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks. . . . The victory kept Kelowna one point ahead of Spokane in the race for third in the Western Conference. . . . Backlund has 12 goals this season. . . . Kelowna is 9-1-0-0 in its last 10 games. . . . F Chris Francis scored his 20th of the season for Portland. . . . Freshman G Keith Hamilton, who is from Kelowna, stopped 45 shots for Portland. Hamilton, 17, was named the game’s third star.

In Kamloops, G Justin Leclerc stopped 58 shots as the Blazers stunned the Vancouver Giants, 3-1. . . . The victory kept the fifth-place Blazers one point ahead of Seattle in the Western Conference. . . . The Giants lost an opportunity to move into first place overall, ahead of the Calgary Hitmen, and to tie the WHL single-season record for most road victories. . . . LW Shayne Wiebe scored twice for Kamloops. He has a team-high 31 goals.

In Kent, Wash., the Seattle Thunderbirds got two goals from F Greg Scott as they beat the Prince George Cougars, 5-2. . . . Scott has 32 goals this season. . . . Seattle is one point behind the fifth-place Kamloops Blazers. . . . C Jim O’Brien had a goal and two helpers for Seattle.

In Spokane, LW Drayson Bowman scored once goal and set up three others as the Chiefs whipped the Everett Silvertips, 7-2. . . . Spokane stayed within a point of third-place Kelowna in the Western Conference. . . . RW Brady Calla had two goals for Spokane and C Mitch Wahl set up three goals. . . . Spokane led this one 7-0 before the game was half over. . . . Chiefs G Dustin Tokarski stopped 35 shots. . . . The Chiefs remain without D Jared Cowen (knee, gone for season), D Trevor Glass (shoulder) and D Cory Baldwin (hand).
