Peter Ruicci of the Sault Star is reporting that the Everett Silvertips are talking with Craig Hartsburg about their vacant head-coaching position.
“A well-placed source says Craig Hartsburg is being considered for the head coaching job with (the) Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips,” Ruicci wrote. “According to the source, Hartsburg, former head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds, and his wife, Peggy, are scheduled to visit Everett, Wash., on Thursday, see the city and meet with Silvertips general manager Doug Soetaert. “
Ruicci reached Hartsburg at home and the former head coach of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators chose not to confirm anything, including travel plans.
“The only thing I will confirm is that I have had some discussions with one major junior team in particular,” said Hartsburg. “But I’ve also had discussions with some NHL teams, so we’ll have to see how it goes. Things are just starting to heat up now with coaching changes and additions to staffs in the hockey world.”
Hartsburg did say that he hasn’t been offered a job.
“It’s early,” he said. “We’re in the feeling-out stage.”
Hartsburg, 49, was fired by the Senators, and replaced by former Kootenay Ice head coach Cory Clouston, during this NHL season. Hartsburg is under contract to Ottawa through 2010-11.
The Silvertips chose to fire head coach John Becanic, who just happens to be a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., following the season.
Ruicci wasn't able to reach Everett GM Doug Soetaert for comment.
