Greg Hawgood, a former WHL and NHL defenceman who was the head coach of the Kamloops Blazers for the last 55 games of the 2007-08 season, is the leading candidate to become head coach of the junior B Kamloops Storm. . . . Ed Patterson and Steve Passmore, the Storm’s coaches for the last two seasons, stepped aside in order to spend more time with their families. The Storm reached the Kootenay International league’s championship final each of the last two seasons. . . . Barry Dewar, the owner and general manager of the Storm, told Mark Hunter of the Kamloops Daily News on Thursday that Hawgood “is one of the guys who’s on our list, and he had a very good interview.” . . . Hawgood, reached at home, denied having been interviewed, but admitted that he is interested in the position. Hawgood was dropped from the Blazers’ coaching staff last summer with a year left on his contract. He recently started working at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. . . . Dewar also said that Al Glendinning, the former GM/head coach of the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, isn’t a candidate for the position.

A few days ago, I posted a couple of links to columns by the late, great Jim Murray, who was a legend at the Los Angeles Times.
His widow, Linda McCoy-Murray, is the president and founder of the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation. She also is a big fan of the Los Angeles Kings and a close friend to Luc Robitaille.
Anyway . . . I heard from Linda who, it turns out, is something of a regular reader of this blog. She pointed out that Jim had written the odd hockey-related column and that she had a couple of favourites.
She dropped this one on me, from a March 14, 1968 column on Gordie Howe:
“You ask a Canadian about Gordie Howe and the first thing he does is take his hat off and place it carefully over his heart.
“His eyes film up, this lump comes to his throat, and you get the eerie feeling that Citizen Howe is at least one of the 12 Apostles.
“He wasn’t born, he was found in the bulrushes."
But Linda says her “all-time favourite” is from a Nov. 22, 1973 column:
“Seeing a goal scored in hockey is like picking your mother out of a crowd shot at the Super Bowl.”
