THE MacBETH REPORT: F Sami Sandell (Brandon, 2004-06) has signed a "game-to-game" contract with LeKi Lempäälä (Finland Mestis). He had three goals and four assists in 37 games split between Ilves Tampere and Blues Espoo (both Finland SM-Liiga) last season. Sandell is still hoping to land a contract with an SM-Liiga club or a club elsewhere in Europe, thus the game-to-game contract with LeKi. Both SM-Liiga and Mestis open their regular seasons on Thursday. . . . F Tomas Plihal (Kootenay, 2001-03) has signed a one-year contract with TPS Turku (Finland SM-Liiga). He had five goals and eight assists in 64 games with San Jose (NHL) last season.

The Saskatoon Blades have their roster down to 29 players after reassigning two skaters to midget AAA teams. C Ryan Olsen of Delta, B.C., will join the B.C. major midget league's Greater Vancouver Canadians, while D Darren Dietz of Medicine Hat will play for the Medicine Hat Big Country Energy Tigers of the Alberta midget league. Olsen was the 20th overall pick in the 2009 bantam draft; Dietz is a list player. . . . Before the weekend, the Blades assigned D Gregory Kost of Saskatoon to the midget AAA Saskatoon Blazers. . . . The Blades roster now includes 16 forwards and 10 defencemen.

Rob Henderson reports in the Brandon Sun that F Sanfred King, 19, returned to the Wheat Kings’ lineup Friday night for the first time since suffering a badly broken right leg during a game in Prince Albert in January. “I never felt (like giving up) once,” King told Henderson. “As soon as I was in the hospital sitting there I knew I wanted to come back and I knew I wanted to give it my all. It’s an important season coming up and I want to be a part of it, so I just buckled down and worked hard on my leg all summer. So hopefully it’s starting to pay off now.” . . . Henderson also reports that F Jay Fehr, 20, skated Monday for the first time since suffering a lacerated leg in an offseason boating accident.

F Tyler Johnson (Spokane) scored in regulation time and F Kris Foucault (Calgary) added a goal in the shootout as the Minnesota Wild edged the Dallas Stars 2-1 at the NHL prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich. Foucault was the only one of 10 shooters to score in the circus. . . . In another game, D Sam Klassen (Saskatoon) and D Tomas Kundratek (Medicine Hat) had goals as the New York Rangers dumped the Atlanta Thrashers, 4-1. F Evander Kane (Vancouver) scored for the Thrashers. Former Swift Current Broncos F Dale Weise, a second-year pro, had a goal and an assist for the Rangers. . . . F Matt Calvert (Brandon) scored three times and and F Cass Mappin (Red Deer) added a singleton as the Columbus Blue Jackets got past the St. Louis Blues, 5-4. Calvert scored a shorthanded unassisted goal at 19:37 of the third period to give his side a 5-3 lead. . . .
