Early Friday . . .

The Prince Albert Raiders are saying that G Garrett Zemlak, 20, will be gone indefinitely with a head injury. He was injured in the second period of the Raiders’ 4-1 victory over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday. Zemlak was involved in a goal-mouth collision with two Wheat Kings, after which Brandon LW Shayne Wiebe was given a charging major and game misconduct. Zemlak was taken off the ice on a stretcher and was taken to hospital. He was released later Wednesday night. . . . On Thursday, Zemlak was at his billet home in Prince Albert, nursing a sore neck and wondering what had happened. He told John MacNeil of the Prince Albert Daily Herald that he has no memory of the collision. . . . The Raiders have recalled G Eric Williams, 16, from the junior B Ridge Meadow Flames of the Pacific International junior league. He was the 71st pick in the 2008 bantam draft.

The WHL suspended Brandon LW Shayne Wiebe for three games for the charging major he incurred Wednesday in Prince Albert. . . . As well, Kelly McCrimmon, the Wheat Kings’ owner, general manager and head coach, was fined $500 after becoming involved with some fans at game’s end. McCrimmon apparently waved a goalie stick in the direction of some jeering fans. . . . The Raiders play in Brandon on Friday night.

G Kyle Jahraus is the Prince George Cougars’ starter again this weekend as they play host to a Friday-Saturday doubleheader with the Kelowna Rockets. Jahraus, 19, was acquired from the Seattle Thunderbirds after both Prince George goaltenders were injured. Alex Wright (collarbone) won’t play again this season. Hudson Stremmel (concussion) skated Thursday but won’t be ready this weekend. . . . The Cougars will have Tim Zwiers, who plays for a local house league midget team, on the bench backing up Jahraus.

The Saskatoon Blades will welcome back F Curtis Hamilton on Friday night after a 21-game absence with a collarbone injury suffered while playing for Team WHL against a touring Russian side. Ironically, the injury occurred in his hometown of Kelowna. Hamilton, 18, also was scratched from this week’s Top Prospects Game in Windsor. . . . He is the son of Kelowna Rockets president/GM Bruce Hamilton. . . . The Blades are at home Friday to the high-flying Kootenay Ice, which has won 13 straight.

The NAHL’s Wichita Falls Wildcats fired head coach John Bowkus on Thursday morning. Bowkus, whose brother Jack played in the WHL for the Saskatoon Blades (1984-88), was in his third season as the Wildcats’ head coach. He also was the GM. They are 10-23-5 and in last place in the South Division. Assistant coach Mike Flanagan was named interim head coach. Rick Brodsky, the owner of the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, is a co-owner and president of the Wildcats.
---
The Calgary Hitmen hope to have F Joel Broda, 20, back in their lineup Friday against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. Broda, who led the WHL last season with 53 goals, has missed three games with a concussion after being on the receiving end of an open-ice hit from Saskatoon Blades D Sam Klassen.
