Calling Oliver Stone . . .

You may recall my posting an entry a week ago on what I referred to as the Don Hay Theory. . . . Well, on Friday night, in Langley, B.C., the Vancouver Giants scored a 1-0 victory over the Everett Silvertips. . . . The game's only goal was scored on a power play late in the third period. . . . Nick Patterson, who covers the Everett Silvertips for the Everett Herald, posted what follows on his blog (Steve Ewen, who is referred to in the last paragraph, covers the Giants for the Vancouver Province). . . .

"Last night the Tips lost 1-0 to Vancouver, the game's only goal being scored in the third period following a mysterious roughing penalty called on Everett defenseman Rasmus Rissanen, as Rissanen wasn't even on the ice when the call was made. After the game Tips broadcaster Jon Rosen, who didn't see the incident, said he talked to everyone in the press box and one person said they saw Rissanen reach out from the bench and grab a Vancouver player as that player was skating by. That would be an awful way to take a penalty late in a tied game, as well as a bizarre thing to do in any circumstances.

"Well, I received a call from Rosen afterwards saying that he'd talked to people on the Everett bench and they were saying that the call was bogus, that Rissanen was just standing there when the Vancouver player skated by and fell down.

"I checked out Steve Ewen's blog story on the game (link on the left) and he doesn't mention anything about the call."
