JUST NOTES: The WHL’s board of governors is in Las Vegas for meetings. Last time I checked the standings, Las Vegas didn’t have a WHL franchise. Gotta think business is booming if the governors can afford to spend time in Las Vegas, rather than hold their meetings in a city where a little media attention might do some good. . . . D Travis Hamonic (shoulder) is still as much as a month away from playing but he did skate Monday after the Brandon Wheat Kings had finished practising. . . . The Portland Winterhawks won two of three weekend games with G Mac Carruth, a 17-year-old freshman, starting all three and recording a .920 save percentage. G Ian Curtis, 20, is out with a shoulder injury. G Keith Hamilton, a second-round pick in the 2007 bantam draft, backed up Carruth. . . . Former Calgary Hitmen D Alex Plante made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night and he picked up an assist in a 4-2 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. Plante, the 15th overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft, has been playing with the AHL’s Springfield Falcons. His father, Cam, played for the Brandon Wheat Kings (1982-84) and still holds the WHL record for most points in one season by a defenceman (140, 1983-84). Yes, Cam was in the stands in Edmonton on Monday night.

The SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers fired GM/head coach Ed Zawatsky on Monday. They named assistant coach Trent Cassan as interim coach through the duration of this season. . . . Zawatsky had been with the Terriers, in one capacity or another, since 2002-03. . . . He won two SJHL titles with the Terriers and was the league’s coach of the year in 2004-05. . . . The Terriers were 21-25-3-1 going into this week.

MONDAY:
In Regina, F Max Reinhart and F Jesse Ismond had shootout goals as the Kootenay Ice scored a 2-1 victory over the Pats. . . . The game originally was to have been played Jan. 24, but was postponed when some ugly weather rolled through southern Saskatchewan. . . . Ice F Matt Fraser scored the game’s first goal, on the PP, at 19:22 of the second period. He has 24 goals this season. . . . Regina sniper Jordan Eberle got the equalizer, his 36th, at 4:11 of the third, also on the PP. . . . Kootenay was 1-for-6 on the PP; Regina was 1-for-5. . . . Regina F Jordan Weal scored in the shootout, but Eberle and F Brett Leffler were blanked. . . . Ice G Todd Mathews stopped 25 shots, six fewer than Regina’s Damien Ketlo. . . . Attendance was 3,861. . . . Kootenay was without F Dustin Sylvester, its leading scorer. He was a late scratch due to illness. . . . The Ice (33-16-2-2) is fourth in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the Calgary Hitmen and two behind the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers. . . . The Pats Pats (23-25-3-2) are seven points out of a playoff spot and have 19 games remaining.
