G Thomas Heemskerk of the Everett Silvertips has joined the AHL’s Worcester Sharks, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. Heemskerk, who turned 20 on April 11, signed a free-agent deal with San Jose in September. He led the WHL with a .927 save percentage, as he went 24-12-2-2 with a 2.34 GAA. . . . Worcester opens a first-round playoff series with the Lowell Lock Monsters on Wednesday.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves, who have won the SJHL title, will open at home against the MJHL-champion Dauphin Kings on Friday and Saturday in the first two games of the ANAVET Cup series. . . . La Ronge took out the Yorkton Terriers in six games, winning 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. . . . Dauphin, the host team for the Royal Bank Cup, is coming off a sweep of the Winnipeg Saints in the MJHL final.
The Vernon Vipers on their second straight BCHL title on Monday, beating the visiting Powell River Kings 3-1 in Game 7. . . . Vernon will play the AJHL champion in the Alberta-B.C. final. The AJHL title will be decided Tuesday when the Spruce Grove Saints play host to Game 7 against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

The NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets are moving their AHL affiliation from the Syracuse Crunch to the Springfield Falcons, who had been hooked up with the Edmonton Oilers. . . . The Blue Jackets announced Monday that they won’t renew the contracts of the Crunch coaching staff — head coach Ross Yates and assistants Trent Cull and Karl Goehring.

In Saskatoon, F Matt Calvert broke a 4-4 tie at 8:09 of the third period as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Blades, 5-4. . . . The Wheat Kings won the second-round series 4-2 and will meet the Calgary Hitmen in the Eastern Conference final. That series opens with games in Calgary on Friday and Saturday nights. . . . The Blades, who won twice in Brandon but lost all three homes games in the series, actually led this one 3-0 early in the second period. They got a first-period goal from F Marek Viedensky and early second-period scores from F Jeremy Boyer, at 0:41 on the PP, and F Gaelan Patterson, at 1:11. . . . Brandon then scored four straight goals, with D Colby Robak, F Aaron Lewadniuk, on the PP, and F Scott Glennie finding the range in the second period. . . . F Shayne Wiebe gave Brandon its first lead at 5:07 of the third period. . . . Saskatoon F Charles Inglis tied the score at 7:11, with Calvert notching the winner just 58 seconds later. . . . Glennie and Brandon F Brayden Schenn each had two assists. . . . Calvert had gone three games without a goal before he got his fifth of these playoffs. . . . The Blades got two assists from captain Derek Hulak, who, as a 20-year-old, was playing his final WHL game. . . . Brandon was 1-for-3 on the PP; Saskatoon was 1-for-4. . . . Brandon G Jacob DeSerres stopped 33 shots, three more than Saskatoon’s Steven Stanford. . . . Attendance was 8,606. . . . Brandon D Darren Bestland (undisclosed) didn’t play. He missed the first three games of the series with an undisclosed problem, but played in Games 4 and 5.

PLAYOFF NOTES:
There is only one second-round playoff series still going and it could end Tuesday night. The Vancouver Giants have a second opportunity to finish off the Winterhawks when they meet at the Rose Garden in Portland. If a Game 7 is needed, it will be played Wednesday in Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. . . . The Giants won’t have F J.T. Barnett for either game. He has a should injury, the extent of which isn’t yet known. Barnett, whose season may well be over, was injured in Game 3 on Wednesday in Vancouver. . . . Portland D Taylor Aronson (shoulder), who was injured in Game 4, won’t play. . . . Scott Sepich, a Portland freelance writer who writes on the Winterhawks, notes that the Winterhawks have “never won a home-ice Game 6 in a best-of-seven playoff series, going 0-9 in its previous opportunities, including a 4-3 loss to Spokane on March 29.” . . . The Winterhawks are 0-5 on home ice in these playoffs and have been outscored 29-19 in the five losses.
