Saturday . . .

Danny Flynn, the director of hockey operations and head coach of the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats, and associate coach Fabian Joseph (Victoria, 1982-84) have signed new deals taking them through the 2013-14 season. . . . Flynn and Joseph, who have been coaching in Moncton for three seasons, both had one year left on their deals. The Wildcats are 117-62-9-18 with them running things. . . . The Wildcats are the QMJHL’s defending champions. . . . Moncton opens training camp on Wednesday.

Eleven of the 29 players on the roster of the team that will represent the Edmonton Oilers at a prospects tournament in Penticton are from the WHL. That includes F Chase Schaber, who is likely to be the next captain of the Kamloops Blazers, and D Nolan Toigo of the Vancouver Giants and D Dallas Ehrhardt of the Moose Jaw Warriors, all of whom have accepted tryout invitations. . . . Other WHLers on the roster are Oilers draft picks -- F Cam Abney (Edmonton Oil Kings), F Drew Czerwinska (Kootenay Ice), F Jordan Eberle (Regina Pats), F Curtis Hamilton (Saskatoon Blades), F Milan Kytnar (Vancouver), F Tyler Pitlick (Medicine Hat Tigers), D Brandon Davidson (Regina), and G Tyler Bunz (Medicine Hat). . . . Also on Edmonton’s roster is Slovakian D Martin Marincin, the 46th overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft who was the Prince George Cougars’ first pick in the CHL’s 2010 import draft.
---
The San Jose Sharks’ roster for that tournament features the likes of F Cam Braes (Lethbridge Hurricanes), F Spencer Edwards (Moose Jaw Warriors), F Curt Gogol (Saskatoon Blades), F Marek Viedensky (Saskatoon), D Spencer Humphries (Tri-City Americans) and G Thomas Heemskerk (Everett Silvertips). . . . Braes, Edwards, Gogol and Humphries, the latter having played one game last season with the Tri-City Americans and three the season before, will be with San Jose on tryout deals.

That tournament runs Sept. 12-16 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton and will feature players from the Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. . . . There will be a total of eight games. . . . Single game tickets and day passes will go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Bert Caldwell of the Spokane Spokesman-Review reports that Spokane Chiefs owner Bobby Brett and his wife, Cathy, have sold a Spokane home for US$2.8 million. That report is right here.

Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province reports that Dan Elliott has been hired by the Vancouver Giants as their new media co-ordinator and radio play-by-play voice. You may know Elliott as the host of WHL game telecasts on Shaw. He replaces Morley Scott, who left after one year to return to Edmonton as the voice of the CFL’s Eskimos. . . . In Edmonton, meanwhile, Corey Graham of the TEAM 1260 is the new radio voice of the Edmonton Oil Kings. He replaces A.J. Jakubec, who was dropped by his radio station earlier in the summer. . . . Still with Edmonton, where the Oilers haven’t yet hired a replacement for veteran Rod Phillips, Robin Brownlee at oilersnation.com had this: “We've had some names speculated on by media types and bloggers -- Regan Bartel of the Kelowna Rockets, Dennis Beyak out of Toronto and Steve Kouleas from The Score, to name three. I've talked to two of the candidates, including one of two guys in the final five who haven't been named, but I don't know who the final three are.” . . . Brownlee speculated that the Oilers might have an announcement by the middle of the week.
