Whistle joins Rockets' coaching staff

THE MacBETH REPORT:
D Tysen Dowzak (Kelowna, 2005-09) signed a one-year contract with the Dundee Stars (Scotland, UK Elite). He had one goal and eight assists in 30 games for the Bloomington Blaze (CHL) last season.

The Regina Pats have signed F Rykr Cole, a third-round selection in the 2012 bantam draft. . . . Cole, from Moosomin, Sask., had 42 points, including 17 goals, in 43 games with the midget AAA Moose Jaw Generals last season.

Emile Griffith, a terrific welterweight/middleweight from the golden days of boxing, died on Tuesday, “his boxing earnings and his memory long gone,” writes Richard Goldstein of The New York Times right here. “He was 75.” . . . Griffith is most remembered for having beaten Benny (Kid) Paret in a title fight on March 24, 1962. Paret died 10 days later. . . . Griffith also struggled with his sexuality and was badly beaten outside a gay bar in Times Square in 1992.

And then there’s the guy who drank eight beer and decided to swim across the Detroit River. Seriously. When he spoke with his mother “she just hung up on me,” John Morillo told Trevor Wilhelm of the Windsor Star. “She said ‘you’re just so stupid.’ ” . . . THE COACHING GAME:
Dave Whistle has signed on as an assistant coach with the major midget Okanagan Rockets, who play out of Kelowna. . . . Whistle is a former WHL defenceman (Kamloops, Brandon, 1986-87) who played four seasons with the Brandon University Bobcats before going on to play in Europe for seven years. He also coached in Great Britain and has been inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. He also did a turn as head coach of the BCHL’s Port Alberni Bulldogs. . . . With the Rockets, he will work alongside GM David Michaud and head coach Mack O’Rourke.
