Outdoor game for Portland?; long arm of law looking for Gaetz

F Tyler Benson, the first overall selection in the 2013 WHL bantam draft, is expected to play for the Vancouver Giants against the Rockets in Kelowna tonight. Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province reports that Benson is expected to join the Giants on a full-time basis next week. . . . Benson, who is pointless in three games with the Giants, has been playing for the Kelowna-based Pursuit Of Excellence under-18 prep team. He put up 91 points, including 35 goals, in 46 games. That team’s season ends this weekend, freeing Benson up to join the Giants. . . .
Ewen also reports Giants F Dominik Volek didn’t practise Thursday because of an undisclosed injury. D Dalton Thrower (ankle) has yet to return to the ice. According to Ewen, “both are unlikely for Friday in Kelowna.“
---
Regan Bartel, the radio voice of the Kelowna Rockets, was in Kennewick, Wash., on Wednesday night. Here’s a note from his blog:
“In talking to Annie Fowler, the beat writer for the Americans, it was confirmed that the Tri-City Herald Best of the West Poll has met its end. The poll, which allowed players, coaches/management and media to vote on several categories has been a staple for the last 25 years and has always been an interesting conversation piece. The process is time consuming and receiving ballots from teams was always a chore.” . . .
---
WHL team logoF Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice takes a 21-game point streak into Saskatoon for a game with the Blades tonight. He has 47 points, 18 of them goals, in the streak that has tied F Mike Comrie for the franchise record. . . . Reinhart also is riding a 14-game assist streak. . . . Both streaks are the longest in the WHL this season.
---
Prince George is at home for Friday-Saturday doubleheader with the Victoria Royals, and Cougars F Troy Bourke is closing in on the club’s career point record. Bourke has 229 points in 270 regular season games; the record is held by F Eric Hunter (2002-07), who put up 233 points in 323 games. . . . Note that this doesn’t include the Victoria Cougars. . . . Prince George F Todd Fiddler goes into the weekend on a 16-game point streak. He has 30 points, 15 of them goals, over that stretch.
---
Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune brings word that the Portland Timbers and Portland Winterhawks have chatted about the possibility of a playing an outdoor WHL game at Providence Park, the home of the MLS team that could seat 20,000 for such a contest. . . . Eggers has more on that right here. . . . There have been two outdoor games played featuring WHL teams. In Spokane, the Chiefs beat the Kootenay Ice 11-2 before 7,075 fans in Avista Stadium on Jan. 15,2011. The Regina Pats beat the host Calgary Hitmen 3-2 in a game played at McMahon Stadium before 20,888 fans on Feb. 21, 2011. (If you are so inclined, there is a list right here of every outdoor game played since Oct. 6, 2001, and there have been more than 100 of them. So much for the novelty!)
Eggers also writes about Winterhawks GM/head coach Mike Johnston’s niece, Rebecca, who was a major contributor to the Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team. Oh, and Eggers also confirms that Winterhawks G Brendan Burke has been out with mononucleosis.
Meanwhile, in The Oregonian, Molly Blue talks with Burke, and updates his status. That report is right here.

The long arm of the law is reaching out in an attempt to locate Link Gaetz. The former WHL defenceman (New Westminster, Spokane, 1986-88) has failed to appear in a Kamloops court room, nor has he been in touch with his lawyer. The result is that an arrest warrant has been issued for Gaetz. There’s more right here from Kamloops This Week.

The WHL is taking the recruiting war with junior A and the NCAA to another level by launching a series of what it calls “combine camps.”

In Everett, the Silvertips scored the game’s last five goals and beat the Prince Albert Raiders, 5-1. . . . F Shane Danyluk gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with his seventh goal at 4:58 of the first, but it was all Silvertips after that. . . . The Americans are without F Taylor Vickerman, 17, whose season is over, thanks to a knee injury. He was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. Vickerman, a native of Kennewick, was acquired from the Vancouver Giants but played just 30 games as a shoulder injury cut into the first half of his season. . . . Also missing from Tri-City lineup last night were F Jessey Astles, who has three games left on a seven-game WHL suspension, and F Phil Tot, who hasn’t played since Feb. 1. . . . The Rockets (50-9-4) lead the overall standings by seven points over the Portland Winterhawks. Each team has nine games remaining. . . . The Saskatoon Blades have brought in G Brandon Kegler from the Edmonton-based midget AAA Knights of Columbus Pats. Kegler, from Leduc, Alta., was the Blades’ second pick in the 2012 bantam draft, going to them in the fourth round. . . . Kegler’s services are needed to back up Troy Trombley after Alex Moodie was injured on Saturday night during a 6-3 loss to the visiting Victoria Royals. Moodie was returning to action after sitting out 12 games with a groin injury, when he went down with an undisclosed injury and didn’t come out for the third period. . . .
The Seattle Thunderbirds have added F Lane Pederson to their roster. Pederson, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft, played this season with the midget AAA Saskatoon Blazers, for whom he had 41 points, including 21 gaols, in 37 games. With the Blazers’ season having ended, Pederson has joined the Thunderbirds. . . .
F Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice goes into this week riding a 20-game point streak, the longest in the WHL this season. The franchise record of 21 is held by F Mike Comrie (Sept. 23 to Nov. 10, 2000). . . . Reinhart also has at least one assist in each of his last 13 games. He has broken the previous franchise record of eight games. . . . F Nic Petan of the Portland Winterhawks has the longest assist streak this season. At 14 games, it is still alive. . . . The Ice visits the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday; the Winterhawks, who were given Monday and Tuesday off, meet the Chiefs in Spokane on Friday.

Moores a hall of famer; Portland streak at 20

In going through some old clippings, I noticed a brief item pointing out that G Byron Penstock of the Brandon Wheat Kings, who was starting in place of Trevor Kidd, who was with Canada’s national junior team, “is winless in his last nine games.
“Penstock has an 0-8-1 record, but his goals-against average is a respectable 4.54 and his save percentage is a healthy .868.”
This was in December 1990, back in the live puck era.
If you were wondering how much the game has changed . . .
This season, going into Sunday’s games, there were 30 goaltenders who had played at least 1,200 minutes. The highest GAA was 4.29; the lowest save percentage was .876.
Of those 30 goaltenders, 16 had their GAA below 3.00 and 16 had a save percentage higher than .900.

Billy Moores, who spent one season (1985-86) as the general manager and head coach of the Regina Pats, is in the 2014 class of inductees to the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in Red Deer. . . . Moores, one of hockey’s really good guys, has been a fixture in Alberta hockey circles since he played for the Oil Kings in the late 1960s. In the years since then, he has worked with the Edmonton Oilers, U of Alberta Golden Bears and the Pats, as well as spending some time coaching in Japan and with the New York Rangers. He presently is the Oilers’ director of coaching development and special projects. . . . Also to be inducted are Gord Hira, Jim Fleming, Leroy Johnson and the 1994 Olds Grizzlys. . . . The induction dinner is scheduled for Edmonton on June 6.
---
F Wade Allison, a Winnipegger who was selected by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the seventh round of the 2012 bantam draft, has committed to attend Western Michigan and play for the Broncos of head coach Andy Murray. . . . Allison made the announcement on his Twitter account (@wadeallison11). . . . Allison, 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, is playing for the Omaha AAA U16 team. He has 133 points, including 62 goals, in 68 games.

SUNDAY’S GAMES:
In Spokane, the Chiefs scored five first-period goals in 6:08 and went on to beat the Kamloops Blazers, 9-4. . . . The Chiefs got three goals and an assist from each of F Mitch Holmberg and F Dominic Zwerger. . . . Holmberg, who had three goals for the second straight night, moved back to the top of the WHL scoring race. He leads the WHL with 57 goals and now has 107 points, one more than Portland Winterhawks F Nic Petan. . . . Holmberg has had five three-goal games this season. . . . The Chiefs tied a franchise record with goals seven seconds apart when Holmberg (7:33) and Zwerger (7:40) scored in the first period. . . . In the last two seasons, Holmberg has put up 187 points in 129 games. In his career, he has 285 points in 305 games. . . . That is good for fifth place on the Chiefs’ all-time list. . . . Holmberg moved past F Ray Whitney and into third spot on the Chiefs’ all-time goal list. His 142 career goals are just four shy of franchise leader Pat Falloon. The Chiefs have nine regular-season games left. . . . Whitney holds the franchise record for three-goal games in a season (1990-91), with six. . . . Zwerger, a 17-year-old freshman from Austria, scored his first WHL hat trick in his 44th game. . . . The Chiefs also got a goal and two assists from each of F Adam Helewka and F Carter Proft, while F Riley Whittingham had three assists. . . . F Matt Bellerive scored twice for Kamloops. . . . Kamloops G Cole Kehler, 16, stopped 32 shots in going the distance. Blazers starter Bolton Pouliot didn’t return to Saturday’s 3-2 shootout victory over the host Seattle Thunderbirds after a first-period goal-mouth collision. He was on the bench last night. . . . The Chiefs (36-21-6) are fifth in the Western Conference, two points behind the Seattle Thunderbirds, who hold a game in hand. . . . Kamloops (13-45-5) is 10th in the conference. . . .

In Everett, F Oliver Bjorkstrand’s shootout goal gave Portland a 2-1 victory over the Silvertips and ran the Winterhawks’ winning streak to 20 games. . . . The WHL record for longest single-season winning streak (22) is held by the Estevan Bruins (Oct. 6, 1967 through Dec. 12, 1967). When you take into account over-lapping seasons, the record (24) is held by the Victoria Cougars (Feb. 6, 1981 through Oct. 9, 1981). . . . The teams played through two scoreless periods before Everett F Ivan Nikolishin, with his 15th goal, scored seven seconds into the third period. . . . Bjorkstrand, with his 43rd, tied it at 7:13. He’s riding a 14-game point streak. . . . Portland F Nic Petan drew an assist, running his point streak to 16 games. . . . Portland G Corbin Boes stopped 23 shots through OT as he ran his record to 12-0-1. . . . Everett G Austin Lotz turned aside 37 shots. . . . The Winterhawks were held to a season-low four shots in the second period. On three previous occasions, they had been held to five shots in a period. Two of those low-shot periods were against Everett. (A tip of the hat to Portland radio voice Todd Vrooman for that info). . . . In the third period and OT, the Winterhawks held a 22-4 edge in shots. . . . The Winterhawks (46-12-5), who next play Friday when they meet the host Spokane Chiefs, are second overall, three points behind the Kelowna Rockets, who have two games in hand. . . . Everett (30-23-9) is seventh, one point behind the Vancouver Giants.

Winterhawks streak at 19; Cougars closer to playoff spot

Jeff Z. Klein of The New York Times reports that “four more former NHL players have joined the concussion lawsuit against the league.” . . . Bernie Nicholls, Bob Bourne, Scott Parker and Bruce Bell now are part of the suit that was filed in November by nine other players. . . . Klein’s report is right here.

Ted Clarke of the Prince George Citizen has more on the situation involving the minor hockey team from that city and the fallout from its appearance at a peewee tournament in Vernon, B.C. Ryan Arnold, the team’s head coach, has been suspended and the investigation continues. Clarke’s story is right here.

JUST NOTES:
The Kootenay Ice played a game on Friday in which they didn’t incur even one penalty. I then wondered in this space if that previously had happened with a Ryan McGill-coached team. Turns out it did. Jeff Hollick, the radio voice of the Ice, informs that it happened earlier this season. . . . On Oct. 13, the host Ice beat the Prince Albert Raiders 2-0 in a game in which referees Brett Montsion and Kyle Scrivens chose not to penalize either team.
