Outdoor game for Portland?; long arm of law looking for Gaetz

F Kris Beech (Calgary, 1996-2001) has been loaned to the Vienna Capitals (Austria, Erste Bank Liga) by the Straubing Tigers (Germany, DEL) for the rest of this season. With Straubing, Beech had 24 points, including eight goals, in 36 games. . . .
D Kenton Smith (Calgary, 1995-2000) has returned to the Braehead Clan Glasgow (Scotland, UK Elite) for the rest of the season. Smith left Clan a month ago to be with his family in Cardiff. This season, in 33 games, he has 11 points, three of them goals.
---

F Tyler Benson, the first overall selection in the 2013 WHL bantam draft, is expected to play for the Vancouver Giants against the Rockets in Kelowna tonight. Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province reports that Benson is expected to join the Giants on a full-time basis next week. . . . Benson, who is pointless in three games with the Giants, has been playing for the Kelowna-based Pursuit Of Excellence under-18 prep team. He put up 91 points, including 35 goals, in 46 games. That team’s season ends this weekend, freeing Benson up to join the Giants. . . .
Ewen also reports Giants F Dominik Volek didn’t practise Thursday because of an undisclosed injury. D Dalton Thrower (ankle) has yet to return to the ice. According to Ewen, “both are unlikely for Friday in Kelowna.“
---
Regan Bartel, the radio voice of the Kelowna Rockets, was in Kennewick, Wash., on Wednesday night. Here’s a note from his blog:
“In talking to Annie Fowler, the beat writer for the Americans, it was confirmed that the Tri-City Herald Best of the West Poll has met its end. The poll, which allowed players, coaches/management and media to vote on several categories has been a staple for the last 25 years and has always been an interesting conversation piece. The process is time consuming and receiving ballots from teams was always a chore.” . . .
---
WHL team logoF Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice takes a 21-game point streak into Saskatoon for a game with the Blades tonight. He has 47 points, 18 of them goals, in the streak that has tied F Mike Comrie for the franchise record. . . . Reinhart also is riding a 14-game assist streak. . . . Both streaks are the longest in the WHL this season.
---
Prince George is at home for Friday-Saturday doubleheader with the Victoria Royals, and Cougars F Troy Bourke is closing in on the club’s career point record. Bourke has 229 points in 270 regular season games; the record is held by F Eric Hunter (2002-07), who put up 233 points in 323 games. . . . Note that this doesn’t include the Victoria Cougars. . . . Prince George F Todd Fiddler goes into the weekend on a 16-game point streak. He has 30 points, 15 of them goals, over that stretch.
---
Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune brings word that the Portland Timbers and Portland Winterhawks have chatted about the possibility of a playing an outdoor WHL game at Providence Park, the home of the MLS team that could seat 20,000 for such a contest. . . . Eggers has more on that right here. . . . There have been two outdoor games played featuring WHL teams. In Spokane, the Chiefs beat the Kootenay Ice 11-2 before 7,075 fans in Avista Stadium on Jan. 15,2011. The Regina Pats beat the host Calgary Hitmen 3-2 in a game played at McMahon Stadium before 20,888 fans on Feb. 21, 2011. (If you are so inclined, there is a list right here of every outdoor game played since Oct. 6, 2001, and there have been more than 100 of them. So much for the novelty!)
Eggers also writes about Winterhawks GM/head coach Mike Johnston’s niece, Rebecca, who was a major contributor to the Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team. Oh, and Eggers also confirms that Winterhawks G Brendan Burke has been out with mononucleosis.
Meanwhile, in The Oregonian, Molly Blue talks with Burke, and updates his status. That report is right here.

The long arm of the law is reaching out in an attempt to locate Link Gaetz. The former WHL defenceman (New Westminster, Spokane, 1986-88) has failed to appear in a Kamloops court room, nor has he been in touch with his lawyer. The result is that an arrest warrant has been issued for Gaetz. There’s more right here from Kamloops This Week.

My Head Hurts offers sanctuary

THE MacBETH REPORT:
Czech-ELH
F Patrik Valcak (Lethbridge, Kelowna, 2003-04) signed a one-year contract with Vitkovice Ostrava (Czech Republic, Extraliga) after a successful tryout. Valcak led the Polish Ekstraliga in scoring and assists last season, with 15 goals and 41 assists in 38 games for Polish champions Cracovia Krakow.

The NHL has rewritten its rule on checking to the head. Elliotte Friedman explores that and a whole lot more in 30 Thoughts, which returned Monday for another season. It is right here.
———
BCHLThe Salmon Arm SilverBacks, who open the BCHL regular season at home to the Vernon Vipers on Friday, are looking for a broadcaster and marketing director following the sudden resignation of Chris Wahl. “This is a complete shock to the organization and we are extremely disappointed,” GM/head coach Troy Mick said in a news release. “However, we will move forward and look to fill these positions as soon as possible.” . . . Interested applicants should email Mick at gm@silverbacks.com or call him at 250-938-5459.
———
Judging by the tweets from Tri-City F Tyson Dallman, 20, the Americans released him Monday:
“I'll never forget any of the staff around the rink, any of the boys and especially my billets. You guys made the past two years of my life . . .
“Unforgettable and I wish all the best to the @TCAmericans for this upcoming season. Go get that Memorial Cup boys. I'll be cheering for you.”
Dallman, from Prince Albert, had 17 points in 90 regular-season games with the Americans. Injuries limited him to 38 games last season.
———
F Taylor Leier of the Portland Winterhawks has signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. He was a fourth-round selection in the 2012 NHL draft. . . . Leier had 62 points, including 27 goals, in 64 games last season, his second in the WHL. He then added 16 points in 21 playoff games. Leier is from Saskatoon and is presently in Philadelphia at the Flyers’ camp.
———
The Saskatoon Blades have hired Ray Dudra to scout the U.S. Dudra, who has scouted for 30 years, has previous WHL experience with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Spokane Chiefs and Prince Albert Raiders. . . . Dudra lives in Edmonton but winters in Arizona. . . . According to a Blades’ news release, during the winters Dudra “will scout and track players throughout the United States.”
———
The Saskatoon Blades are down to two goaltenders after assigning Brandon Kegler, 16, to the midget AAA Leduc, Alta., Oil Kings. . . . Kegler was a fourth-round selection in the 2012 WHL bantam draft. . . . (His nickname has to be Bowler, doesn’t it?) . . . With Kegler gone, the Blades are left with Nathan Alalouf and Alex Moodie as their goaltenders. Alalouf, a list player from Delta, B.C., is 17. He played last season with the major midget Greater Vancouver Canadians. . . . Moodie, an 18-year-old from Winnipeg, has played 28 games with the Blades over the last two seasons, going 14-7-1, 4.10, .872.
———
Roy MacGregor of The Globe and Mail was canoeing when the Canadian Olympic hockey team coaching staff and more than 40 prospective players gathered in Calgary to, uhh, play ball hockey. . . . Today, MacGregor is wondering just what the heck was going on, and that piece is right here. Thankfully, MacGregor doesn’t try to pick the Olympic team roster or attempt to name a goaltender or decide who should be on the PP. Rather, he wonders just what was going on.
———
Bobby Brett, the owner of the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs, and former Chiefs player Pat Falloon will be among five inductees into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame at the Spokane Arena on Oct. 22. . . . The Spokane Spokesman-Review has more right here.

From the Kamloops Daily News:
The Crown has dropped one charge against former NHL enforcer Link Gaetz after his alleged victim died July 6 in a drowning accident.
Jean Guye-Vuilleme, 72, drowned in Seton Lake after walking into the water at Seton Beach.
Defence lawyer Jeremy Jensen said the Crown subsequently dropped the charge of assault against Gaetz for an incident involving Guye-Vuilleme at the Dairy Queen in Cache Creek on April 20, 2012.
But a second charge of causing a disturbance remains outstanding.
Gaetz, knicknamed Missing Link during his brief NHL career with the San Jose Sharks, reportedly screamed and yelled inside the restaurant and became involved in a consensual fight with several people following the tussle with Guye-Vuilleme.
A date has not been set for the trial. Jensen said Gaetz did not appear in Kamloops because he is in custody in Alberta facing charges on other criminal matters.

If you are a player or former playing battling post-concussion syndrome, you may want to check out My Head Hurts, a website that was unveiled on Monday.
Here is the news release that heralded its arrival:
Los Angeles, CA, September 09, 2013 --(PR.com)-- One year removed from his shocking announcement to retire from college football and forgo an NFL career, due to repeated concussions, former UCLA linebacker Patrick Larimore unveils today a new social enterprise, My Head Hurts, to empower brain trauma survivors.
This interactive community aims to promote greater innovation, advanced methods of care, and staunch support and empathy for the millions affected by brain injuries.
“The wall of silence has finally been broken,” said Larimore, who has become a vocal advocate of improving the diagnosis and treatment of brain injuries, as well as preventive measures. “It’s time to discuss brain injuries more openly and recognize the thousands of untold stories out there.”
Larimore, a former UCLA team captain and starting middle linebacker, received national recognition for making one of the most historic and courageous decisions by a student-athlete. After suffering repeated concussions, including one that sidelined the former UCLA defensive MVP for over a month, Larimore retired from college football in August of 2012. He skipped his final season of eligibility as a senior, and potentially a promising career in the NFL.
“As much as I love football, I realized that my long-term health and my personal relationships were too important to risk if I continued to compete on the field,” Larimore said. “These injuries are simply not endurable if you ignore your body and mind.”
My Head Hurts was founded by Larimore in response to the outpouring of support, following his announcement.
“People were reaching out to me from all over the country,” Larimore said. “Many of them had stories of their own – brain injuries as a result of sports, military service, manual labor, or even household accidents. We want them to know that they’re not alone.”
MyHeadHurts.co, along with featuring top experts and educational resources, will focus heavily on social interaction among brain trauma survivors and their loved ones, making it easier to share stories and connect with peers and medical professionals.
“The stories are what make this issue come to life,” added Larimore. “These injuries have a profound impact on family and friends, not just the individual survivors.”
Larimore has committed to changing the culture of how brain injuries are perceived and treated – not just in sports, but throughout every professional environment.
“It’s a shared responsibility,” Larimore said. “We cannot afford to underestimate the severity of brain injuries.
“My Heads Hurts will be the first step in giving these injuries, and the individuals affected by them, the attention that they deserve.”

AHLThe AHL’s Manchester Monarchs have signed G Ty Rimmer to an ATO (amateur tryout agreement). Rimmer played out his junior eligibility with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, leading the WHL in miutes played (2,310) and saves (2,106). He finished 24-30-10, 3.19, .912. . . . Rimmer, who turns 21 today, is represented by Turning Point Sports Management. . . . The Monarchs are affiliated with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.

NHLThe Edmonton Oilers have signed F Travis Ewanyk to a three-year, entry-level NHL contract. Ewanyk, 19, was a third-round selection in the NHL’s 2011 draft. He was limited to 11 games last season because of shoulder problems, but came back in time for the Oil Kings’ championship playoff run. This season, he put up 23 points and had 119 penalty minutes in 58 games.
Bruce McCurdy takes a really good look at the Ewanyk signing right here.
———
Brent Peterson, the former Portland Winterhawks player and coach, has written a book and it hit shelves (and amazon.com) on Friday. My Toughest Faceoff: My Life in Hockey and My Battle with Parkinson’s Disease was written with Jim Diamond.
It’s available right here.

THE COACHING GAME:
Dan Olson of The Now, a newspaper on the Lower Mainland of B.C., has more right here on the decision by the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express to fire GM/head coach Jon Calvano with a year left on his contract. . . .
Taylor Dakers (Kootenay, 2003-07) has signed on as the goaltending coach of the junior B 100 Mile House Wranglers of the Kootenay International junior league. . . . Dakers is the goaltending coach with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips and the senior head instructor of the Calgary-based World Pro Goaltending. . . . Before moving into the WHL, Dakers played junior B for Wranglers head coach Doug Rogers.

Former WHL D Link Gaetz (New Westminster, Spokane, 1986-88) is facing an assault trial after an incident at a Dairy Queen outlet in Cache Creek, B.C., on April 20.
The Kamloops Daily News reports in its Saturday editions that Gaetz has been charged with assault and causing a disturbance. Gaetz has been charged with assaulting Jean Guye-Vuilleme in the restaurant.
The trial date of Oct. 8 has been set in Kamloops.
“We will be litigating the matter,” Jeremy Jensen, Gaetz’s lawyer, told the newspaper. “Legendary hockey figure aside, at this point the presumption is that he is innocent.”
Gaetz, 44, is from Vancouver.

After the piece here yesterday about the NHL’s Washington Capitals having requested that the Lethbridge Hurricanes change their logo, more than one person contacted me to point out that the BCHL’s Cowichan Capitals have a similar logo.
For the record, here are all three logos:

FRIDAY’S GAMES:
In Saskatoon, G Cam Lanigan stopped 42 shots as the Medicine Hat Tigers beat the Blades, 3-0. . . . The Tigers hold a 2-0 lead in the series after sweeping the Blades in a first-round series a year ago. . . . Lanigan has stopped 84 of 85 shots over two games. . . . Saskatoon now has lost 10 straight playoff games. . . . F Trevor Cox got his second goal in two nights, this one on the PP at 3:32 of the second, and it stood as the winner. . . . Medicine Hat F Mile Koules had a goal and an assist. . . . The Blades were without F Jessey Astles, who drew a ‘tbd’ suspension under supplemental discipline for a first-period hit on Medicine Hat F Matt Staples, who left the game and didn’t return. Staples, who has concussion-like symptoms, was scratched from Game 2, with F Steven Owre taking his place in the lineup. The length of Astles’ suspension is expected to be finalized on Monday. . . . The Blades inserted F Ryan Graham in Astles’ spot. Saskatoon also dressed D Kyle Schmidt and took out D Nelson Nogier. . . .  Saskatoon was without F Erik Benoit (undisclosed) for the first two games. . . .

In Edmonton, F Stephane Legault had a seven-point night as the Oil Kings whipped the Kootenay Ice, 9-0. . . . Legault scored three times, added four assists and was a plus-4. . . . The WHL record for most points in a playoff game is eight, shared by F Dave Chartier of the Brandon Wheat Kings (March 27, 1981) and F Alfie Turcotte of the Portland Winterhawks (March 26, 1983). Chartier had five goals and three assists in a 13-4 victory over the visiting Regina Pats. Turcotte was four and four in a 13-4 victory over the host Seattle Breakers. . . . Edmonton G Laurent Brossoit stopped 28 shots for his third career playoff shutout. . . . Edmonton struck for five goals in the last 12 minutes of the first period. . . . F Michael St. Croix had a goal and two assists, F Trevor Cheek had two goals and an assist — and was plus-5 — and D Martin Gernat had three assists. . . .

In Calgary, G Chris Driedger turned aside 39 shots to lead the Hitmen to a 3-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. . . . The Hitmen led 3-0 before F Adam Lowry ruined Driedger’s shutout bid at 10:19 of the third on a PP. . . . F Cody Sylvester, F Greg Chase and F Victor Rask scored for Calgary, the first two in the second period, the latter in the third. . . .

In Red Deer, G Patrik Bartosak stopped 31 shots to lead the Rebels to a 3-0 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . Bartosak was the Eastern Conference’s first-team all-star goaltender. . . . F Brooks Maxwell scored 25 seconds into the game — he tipped in a point shot by D Brady Gaudet — and the Rebels were never caught. . . . F Rhyse Dieno scored Red Deer’s second goal, at 19:04 of the first. Just before that, at 16:19, Dieno came up short on a penalty shot attempt. . . . Prince Albert G Luke Siemens made 27 saves. . . .

In Spokane, F Alessio Bertaggia broke a 1-1 tie at 11:15 of the first period and the Chiefs went on to a 4-1 victory over the Tri-City Americans. . . . F Mitch Holmberg scored twice for the Chiefs, while D Brenden Kichton and D Reid Gow each had two assists. . . . Spokane G Eric Williams stopped 26 shots. . . . D Brandon Carlo, a 16-year-old from Colorado Springs playing his first WHL game, scored for the Americans. He tied the game at 6:36 of the first period. Carlo is in the lineup replacing the injured Mitch Topping. . . .

In Portland, G Austin Lotz stopped 55 shots to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 4-3 victory over the Winterhawks. . . . Lotz, who was making his first career playoff start, has performed this kind of larceny at least one other time. On Feb. 7, he turned aside 65 shots in a 4-3 OT loss in Kamloops. . . . The Silvertips had lost their previous 10 playoff games. . . . F Kohl Bauml scored twice for the Silvertips. His first goal, at 3:25 of the third, gave Everett a 3-1 lead. His second goal, at 12:46, gave Everett a 4-2 lead. . . . Portland fired 22 shots at Lotz in the third period and finally got a PP goal from F Nic Petan with 16 seconds remaining. . . . Portland G Mac Carruth turned aside 27 shots. . . .

Lipon scored twice, while F Steven Hodges had two goals for Victoria. . . . Kamloops G Cole Cheveldave stopped 22 shots, with 11 of those coming in the third period. He made four game-saving stops in the third period. . . . G Patrik Polivka, who hadn’t played since March 5, was back in goal for the Royals. He made 33 saves. . . . The Royals were without F Alex Gogolev, their leading scorer. He is out long-term after undergoing surgery to repair damage to a leg from a skate cut. . . . Victoria also was without D Tyler Stahl, its captain. Originally, the Royals had him in the lineup, with question marks beside D Ryan Gagnon and D Isaac Schacher. Stahl took the warmup and then was scratched, with Gagnon and Schacher both staying in and playing. . . .

In Kelowna, F Luke Lockhart scored the game’s last two goals as the Seattle Thunderbirds beat the Rockets, 5-4. . . . The Rockets took a 4-3 lead by scoring in the last minute of the second period (F Tyson Baillie on a PP at 19:02) and in the first minute of the third period (F Myles Bell at 0:59). . . . Lockhart scored at 13:30 to force OT and then won it at 19:09 of the first extra-time period. . . . Seattle G Brandon Glover stopped 35 shots, 10 fewer than Kelowna’s Jordon Cooke. . . . D Jesse Forsberg and F Roberts Lipsbergs each had a goal and two assists for Seattle. . . . Lipsbergs assists came on Lockhart’s goals. . . . D Damon Severson scored once and added two assists for Kelowna.

Tuesday . . .

THE MacBETH REPORT: F Oscar Möller (Chilliwack, 2006-08) signed a two-year contract with Skellefteå (Sweden, Elitserien). He had one goal and three assists in 13 games with the Los Angeles Kings (NHL) and 23 goals and 27 assists in 59 games with the Manchester Monarchs (AHL) this season. . . . Möller said to Skellefteå newspaper Norran when asked if he wanted to return to the NHL: "Absolutely. I've said to all the clubs I talked to. It is my goal to get back to the NHL. I have not given up my dream, and it is certain with Skellefteå that you have that attitude.” . . .
F Joni Lindlöf (Kelowna, Lethbridge, 2002-04) signed a one-year contract with Kristianstad (Sweden Division 1). He had 21 goals and 21 assists in 38 games for Björklöven Umeå (Sweden Division 1) this season.
———
You may have seen F Mikael Granlund score that spectacular goal for Finland in the world championship game against Russia last week. The MacBeth Report points out that he did the same thing during the 2006-07 season while playing for the Kärpät Oulu bantam team. The video isn’t top-flight but you can see it right here. . . . As The MacBeth Report adds: “So in four years, he goes from bantams to scoring possibly the most talked about goal in World Championship history.”
———
Allan Maki of The Globe and Mail writes today about the Kootenay Ice and the Chynoweth connection. That piece is right here.
———
He was the Missing Link. But it turns out that Link Gaetz isn’t missing. Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News talked with Gaetz and that story is right here.
———
JUST NOTES: The U of Regina Cougars have landed a couple of former WHLers in D Mark Schneider (Kamloops, Brandon, Regina, 2006-10) and G Andrew Hayes (Brandon, 2007-10). Hayes played this season with the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. . . . Red Deer city council has supported a $1-million grant that is to be used towards adding seating to the Centrium. Paul Cowley of the Red Deer Advocate has more right here.
———
THE COACHING GAME: Former NHLer Gordie Dwyer is the new head coach of the QMJHL’s P.E.I. Rocket. He had been working with the junior A Summerside Western Capitals as head coach and associate director of hockey operations. . . . The MJHL’s Winkler Flyers have signed John Marks, their director of hockey operations and head coach, to a two-year extension, while the Selkirk Steelers have signed head coach Ryan Smith to a deal that goes through 2013-14. Smith also will serve as the club‘s director of player personnel. The Steelers also will have assistant coaches Justin Harris and Jordan Sobkowicz back for another season.

Remember the Gassoff Gang? . . . Curtis Gassoff is working hard to revive the Quesnel Kangaroos, and has applied for entry into the Central Interior Hockey League in B.C. Curtis, if you’re wondering, is Ken’s 25-year-old son. Percy Hebert of the Quesnel Cariboo-Observer has the story right here.
