Blades, Royals cut deal ... Tigers get goaltender ... Blood test for concussions?

WHL trades since Dec. 27:
Trades: 6.
Players: 10.
Bantam draft picks: 5.
Conditional bantam draft picks: 1.
(WHL trade deadline is Jan. 10).
——
F Arjun Atwal was in the Saskatoon Blades’ lineup on Sunday afternoon after having been acquired from
ARJUN ATWAL
the Victoria Royals in a trade announced earlier in the day.
The Blades got Atwal, 17, and an undisclosed conditional bantam draft pick in exchange for D K’Andre Miller, 16, and a sixth-round pick in the 2019 bantam draft. The Blades had acquired that sixth-round pick from the Everett Silvertips for G Dorin Luding on Dec. 2.
Atwal, from Edmonton, has been playing for the AJHL’s Sherwood Park Crusaders. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder had 14 goals and 17 assists in 33 games. He was the highest-scoring 1999-born player in the AJHL.
The Blades have incurred some injury woes in their forward ranks and are hoping that Atwal can help them get over this rough spell.
Miller, from Hopkins, Minn., hasn’t signed a WHL contract and has, in fact, committed to Wisconsin for 2018-19. He is in the U.S. National Team Development Program, playing for the U-17 team in the USHL. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder had three goals and six assists in 28 games. Earlier this season, he had one assist in five games with Team USA at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge.

The Portland Winterhawks have traded G Michael Bullion, 19, to the Medicine Hat Tigers for a seventh-
MICHAEL BULLION
round selection in the 2017 WHL bantam draft.
The Winterhawks also signed G Shane Farkas, who had been with the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warrriors, and he will join Portland to play alongside Cole Kehler.
Farkas, 17, was selected in the fourth-round of the 2014 bantam draft by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Portland acquired his rights on Sept. 15 in a deal that sent F Tanner Nagel, 18, to the Hurricanes. In 22 games with West Kelowna, Farkas, who is from Penticton, B.C., was 12-7-0, 3.10, .908.
Bullion, 19, is from Anchorage. The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder was a ninth-round pick by Portland in the 2012 bantam draft. His acquisition leaves the Tigers with three goaltenders, at least for now, with the others being Nick Schneider, who leads the WHL with 25 victories, and freshman Duncan McGovern, 16.
This season, Bullion got into 12 games with Portland, going 5-5-1, 3.76, .891.
The trade allows the Tigers to add an experience backup for what they hope will be a deep run in the spring, while the Winterhawks get to look at someone who may be their future starter.
Meanwhile, the Winterhawks also signed 5-foot-9, 140-pound F Reece Newkirk, who is with the midget AAA Moose Jaw Generals. Newkirk, 15, was Portland’s third-round pick in the 2016 bantam draft. The Moose Jaw native has 24 points, including nine goals, in 29 games with the Generals.

The Vancouver Giants will meet the Hitmen in Calgary in Monday’s lone WHL game. Derek Holloway, the Giants’ bus driver, reports that the trip to Calgary covered 1,158 km and took 12-1/2 hours. . . . Driving conditions, he told Taking Note, were “only bad from Banff to Calgary. The Coquihalla was clear and not snowing.”

Concussion Report
“Medical researchers in London, Ont., say they have developed a simple blood test that can detect if someone has suffered a concussion with more than 90 per cent accuracy — a finding that may eventually replace current tests that rely on patients to describe their own symptoms,” according to a CTV News report on Saturday. . . . “The blood test uses a small sample of blood drawn from someone within 72 hours of a sudden blow to the head to measure 174 brain chemicals that change in response to a brain injury. Doctors then run tests on the blood to search for signs of a concussion.” . . . The complete story is right here.

Tortorella: We practice too much; we coach too much ... 'Tips overpower Hitmen ... Cougars real road warriors

-———
F Mitch Wahl (Spokane, 2005-10) has signed a contract for the rest of this season with Västervik (Sweden, Allsvenskan). This season, he had one goals and three assists in 16 games with Ilves Tampere (Finland, Liiga) before being released on Oct. 30.
-———
Granted that it’s on an experimental basis, but who would have thought that head coach John Tortorella of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets would be the guy to bring an end to the morning skate on the day of a game? . . . "When I can, I want to start trying to keep the team away from the morning,” he told Cory Wilkins in a story posted at thescore.com. “We bring them in here one time a day during practice days, but on game days we bring them in twice. It doesn't make any sense. With our schedule coming up the way it is, we are trying to get our guys out of the building as much as we can." . . . No, it doesn’t make sense and it hasn’t for a number of years. It also will be interesting to see if less time on the practice ice, even as loose as morning skates can be, will result in fewer injuries. . . . Tortorella also said: "When we get (the schedule) in July, I look for days off, not to see how many days we can practice. I do not want to practice two days in a row at all this year. We practice too much, we coach too much. If we don't have them here, then we don't have to coach them." . . . The Blue Jackets are into a stretch of seven games in 12 days. It will be interesting to see how they do. . . . Wilkins’ complete story is right here.
——
D Ryan Gardiner, 19, and the Moose Jaw Warriors have “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways, according to the WHL team. . . . Gardiner, from Winnipeg, is expected to join the MJHL’s Selkirk Steelers. . . . A third-round selection by the Warriors in the 2012 WHL bantam draft, he was in his third season with Moose Jaw. This season, he had two assists in 17 games. . . . In 158 regular-season games, he had one goal and 29 assists.
——
The Edmonton Oil Kings have added G Josh Dechaine, 18, to their roster. Dechaine had been with the SJHL’s La Ronge Ice Wolves. From St. Albert, Alta., he also has had stints with the AJHL’s Whitecourt Wolverines and Whitecourt Wolverines. He also has been in training camp with the Brandon Wheat Kings each of the past three years. . . . Dechaine, who has been practising with the Oil Kings, will replace freshman G Liam Hughes on the Edmonton roster. Hughes is out indefinitely with an undisclosed injury. . . . G Boston Bilous, 15, who had been backing up Patrick Dea since Hughes was hurt, has returned to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.
——
The Moose Jaw Warriors announced Tuesday that brothers Kevin and Ryan Smyth will be the 2016 inductees into the Conexus Warriors and Legends Hall of Fame. . . . It all will take place on March 3, with the Hall of Fame Game against the Medicine Hat Tigers on March 4. . . . Kevin finished his WHL career (1990-93) with 242 points, including 104 goals, in 201 games with the Warriors. He is seventh on Moose Jaw’s career points list. He was a fourth-round selection by the Hartford Whalers in the 1992 NHL draft. In 58 NHL games, he had six goals and eight assists. He played nine years of pro hockey, with stops in the AHL, IHL and WCHL. . . . The Warriors selected Ryan in the second round of the 1991 WHL bantam draft. He went to play 188 regular-season games with them, putting up 110 goals and 114 assists. He is 13th on the team’s all-time scoring list. In 1993-94, he had 105 points, including 50 goals. He was drafted sixth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL‘s 1994 draft. His NHL career included time with Edmonton, the New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. He also had an extensive international career on various Canadian teams.

The Okanagan Hockey Group, which is based in Penticton, B.C., has released an economic impact study that includes some numbers of interest.  According to the study, OHG had an economic impact of $19.91 million from September 2015 through August 2016. . . . From an OHG news release: “Okanagan Hockey Group Ltd. directly injects $3.95 million into the local economy. . . . Okanagan Hockey Academy activities contribute $7.7 million in direct spending in the City of Penticton. . . . As a result of Okanagan Hockey Camps offering eight weeks of programming the local economy benefited by an additional $4.8 million in direct spending.” . . . OHG provides 30 full-time and 100 part-time jobs with an annual payroll in excess of $1.76 million. . . . What I found especially interesting was that “47 families relocated to Penticton” with 15 of those relocating for the school year and 32 spent the entire year there. Those 47 families resulted in more than “$2.98 million of new dollars being spent in the local economy.” As well, visiting families spent $1.51 million, while visiting teams (1,671 visitors) spent $365,000. . . . According to the release, the study was conducted by “an independent third party, Lochaven Management Consultants Ltd., a company with 30 years of experience and a global reputation for excellence, (that) is internationally recognized for its work in private sector development.” . . . I am well aware that economic impact studies are to be read with caution, but these numbers can offer an interesting take on the impact of a business like OHG on a community the size of Penticton.
——
Steve Payne was a sniper; Michel Petit was a banger. They don’t know each other; they know of each other. Their NHL careers were ended by brain injuries and now both ex-players have joined the concussion-related lawsuit against the NHL. . . . Payne is adamant that he isn’t involved because he is looking for money. "I hope I don't become one of those guys, because that means I'm having trouble and problems that are beyond my ability to handle," he tells Joshua Kloke of sports.vice.com."I just want (the NHL) to be there for these guys and help them get the treatment they need to at least live as normal a life as they can under the circumstances.” . . . What Payne and Petit have gone through is an eye-opener and worth a read. Kloke’s story is right here.

JUST NOTES:

The Kootenay Ice is expected to have F Peyton Krebs, 15, in the lineup for the first time (tonight) when it meets the Hurricanes in Lethbridge. Krebs, from Okotoks, Alta., was the first overall selection in the WHL’s 2016 bantam draft. Krebs is spending this season with the midget AAA UFA Bisons. He has 21 points, nine of them goals, in 12 games. . . .
The Saskatoon Blades have a flu bug going through the dressing room. G Logan Flodell and D Libor Hajek, two key individuals, weren’t able to practice on Tuesday. The Blades are at home to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Thursday.

Report: Pats to get WHL support . . . Import* goalie cut by Everett . . . Minulin leads Broncos to win

F Petr Kalus (Regina, 2005-06) has ended a tryout agreement with Zvolen (Slovakia, Extraliga) in order to sign a one-year contract with the Nottingham Panthers (England, UK Elite). Kalus played for Nottingham in 2013-14.
-———

Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post is reporting that the Regina Pats are expected to get complete support from the WHL and its teams in their bid to serve as the host team for the 2018 Memorial Cup tournament.
That will be the 100th anniversary of the Memorial Cup; it also will be the 100th anniversary of the Pats.
The WHL’s board of governors is meeting in Calgary and Anthony Marquardt, the Pats governor and co-owner, is scheduled to ask for support today (Wednesday).
“Multiple league sources have told the Leader-Post that the Pats are a shoo-in to receive a full endorsement from the WHL,” Harder writes. “Once the formalities are complete, the nominee will be presented to the CHL for final approval.”
The CHL has said it will announce in November the successful applicants from each of the three major junior leagues.
Harder’s complete story is right here.
——
One of the more interesting stories in the WHL may have come to an end on Tuesday when the Everett Silvertips dropped G Lasse Petersen from their roster.
LASSE PETERSEN
Petersen, 19, is expected to join the MJHL’s Swan Valley Stampeders.
Petersen is from Denmark; in fact, he has played for Denmark’s U-16, U-18 and U-20 teams. He also is a goaltender, and you will be aware that the CHL moved to ban import goaltenders more than three years ago.
Petersen’s father, Erik, is a Canadian, who played and coached in Denmark. Thus, Lasse has dual citizenship and isn’t considered an import by the CHL. Mark him as an import with an asterisk.
Petersen was 3-2-0, 3.13, .879 in seven games with the Calgary Hitmen last season, before moving on to the Spokane Chiefs with whom he was
9-5-1, 2.95, .894 in 18 appearances. He also was 2-4, 3.25, .883 with the Chiefs in the playoffs.
This season, with Everett, he was 1-0-0, 1.00, .923 before being released on Tuesday.
The decision to drop Petersen means the Silvertips have decided to go with the same goaltending tandem that they used last season — Carter Hart, 18, who signed a three-year deal with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, and Mario Petit, 19.
Everett’s roster is down to 25, including two goaltenders and eight defencemen.
——
The Lethbridge Hurricanes got F Giorgio Estephan back from the camp of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres on Monday.
Meanwhile, F Keegan Kolesar returned to the Seattle Thunderbirds after being with the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, Kolesar had surgery for a supraumbilical hernia and will be out for perhaps another five weeks.
By my count, and it’s strictly unofficial, the following WHL players remain in NHL camps, not including 20-year-olds:
Brandon Wheat Kings — D Ivan Provorov, Philadelphia Flyers.
Calgary Hitmen — D Jake Bean, Carolina Hurricanes.
Prince Albert Raiders — D Brendan Guhle, Buffalo Sabres.
Seattle Thunderbirds — F Mathew Barzal, New York Islanders.

JUST NOTES:

F Eetu Tuulola of the Everett Silvertips was at practice on Tuesday but wasn’t on the ice. One of his arms was in a sling. He’s week-to-week. . . .
F Tyler Popowich and F Owen Hardy, both of whom have been out with undisclosed injuries, practised with the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday. They should be available tonight against the visiting Victoria Royals. . . . The Giants also may have F Tyler Benson back in their lineup. He hasn’t played since a Sept. 11 exhibition game when he sat out the last eight minutes of the third period. He was in camp with the Edmonton Oilers — they took him in the second round of the NHL’s 2016 draft — but he didn’t see any game action.
