WHL teams working against mumps . . . Edmond sets P.G. record . . . Victoria d-man spins record, too

The WHL isn’t in lockdown mode, but it is into prevention in a big way as it hopes to avoid a full-blown outbreak of mumps.
The league issued a news release on Friday evening that began:
“The Western Hockey League was informed of confirmed cases of mumps within one of our member  clubs in early February. Since that time, the WHL has been working closely with its team services committee, all 22 WHL member clubs and their training staff members as well as the applicable health authorities to ensure proper steps are being taken to minimize the spread of the virus.”
To date, it has been confirmed that players and staff with the Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers have been diagnosed with mumps over the past couple of weeks. As well, Brent Sutter, the owner, general manager and head coach of the Red Deer Rebels, indicated on Thursday while discussing the mumps outbreak with rdnewsNOW that “they had a situation occur in Swift Current” with the Broncos.
You can bet that all WHL teams are working on prevention.
“All WHL clubs were also asked to review vaccination histories of players and team staff and strongly recommend vaccination if necessary,” the WHL news release continued. “The medical and training staff members of each WHL club and the WHL office are on alert for anyone displaying mumps symptoms, including officials, and isolating individuals as required.”
In Kamloops, Blazers athletic trainer Colin (Toledo) Robinson, who worked his 1,500th game on Friday night, said he and his staff have been doing a lot of cleaning with bleach and are using their electrolysed washing system a lot more than they normally do. They also are making sure that water bottles are cleaned every day.
The WHL has asked teams to limit contact between players and fans, so teams are suspending minor hockey promotions and other appearances that might put players in close proximity to fans.
On Friday, for example, the Blazers, who were at home to the Kelowna Rockets, cancelled the pregame Timbits promotion that normally has a minor hockey player on the ice with them for the anthem. Security staff at the Sandman Centre also acted to limit post-game contact between players and fans in the arena’s lower reaches.
In Red Deer, the Rebels cancelled a post-game autograph session that would have have involved players and fans interacting.
The Rebels notified their fans via tweet: “There is currently a mumps outbreak and for player safety we cannot hold post-game autographs tonight.”
The Calgary Hitmen also cancelled a post-game autograph session last night.
This isn’t a problem affecting only the WHL. On Friday afternoon, the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks revealed that one player, D Troy Stecher, has been diagnosed with mumps and at least four others are showing symptoms.
——
Andy Eide of ESPN 710 Seattle posted a Seattle Thunderbirds notebook prior to Friday’s games that included some interesting info. . . . D Ethan Bear now holds the Thunderbirds record for career goals by a defenceman, but he isn’t likely to reach the points record that is held by Shea Theodore. . . . Meanwhile, head coach Steve Konowalchuk needs three victories to tie Don Nachbaur for second place on the franchise’s career list. Nachbaur, now the head coach of the Spokane Chiefs, ran the Seattle bench from 1994-2000. . . . Eide’s complete notebook is right here.

Rebels add veteran forward . . . Howden gets NHL deal . . . Constantine pays the piper

———
F Waltteri Hopponen (Everett, 2013-14) has been loaned by HPK Hämeenlinna (Finland, Liiga) to LeKi Lempäälä (Finland, Mestis) for one game. This season, he was pointless in 19 games with HPK, and he four goals and seven assists in 12 games with LeKi.
———
The Red Deer Rebels acquired F Austin Glover, 20, from the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday, sending F D-Jay Jerome, 17, and a third-round selection in the 2017 draft the other way.
AUSTIN GLOVER
From Clavet, Sask., the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Glover had put up 12 goals and 14 assists in 35 games with the Raiders this season. He was a second-round pick by the Kelowna Rockets in the 2011 WHL draft. On Dec. 10, 2014, the Rockets sent him to Prince Albert in a deal that had D Josh Morrissey end up in Kelowna.
In 190 career regular-season games, Glover has 41 goals and 73 assists.
The Rebels now have three 20s, with D Colton Bobyk and F Evan Polei the others.
Brent Sutter, the Rebels’ general manager and head coach, obviously his club is capable of making some noise between now and season’s end. Why else give up a youngster and a third-round pick? When the deal was made, the Rebels were 17-14-6 and third in the Central Division, one point behind the Lethbridge Hurricanes and four ahead of the Edmonton Oil Kings. Perhaps Glover’s experience will add some discipline and consistency to the Rebels’ game.
D-JAY JEROME
The 6-foot-0, 170-pound Jerome, from Lethbridge, had five goals and three assists in 23 games with the Rebels. He fits into a Prince Albert lineup that is in full rebuild mode.
With Glover gone, the Raiders had an opening for a 20-year-old, so they have brought back F Kolten Olynek, a native of Saskatoon who had been claimed off waivers by the Saskatoon Blades earlier in the season. The Blades later released him.
The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Olynek has played 217 regular-season games, and has 25 goals and 36 assists. He had played 46 games with the Raiders last season, after starting with the Spokane Chiefs, and three this season, totalling nine goals and 11 assists. He was a second-round pick by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2011 bantam draft.
With the Raiders, he joins F Cavin Leth and F Tim Vanstone as the 20s.
——
F Brett Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. He was a first-round selection, 27th overall, in the NHL’s 2016 draft. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Howden went into last night’s games with 32 points, including 16 goals, in 21 games with the Warriors this season. From Oakbank, Man., he had 143 points, including 63 goals, in 162 career regular-season WHL games. . . . Later on Wednesday, Howden was named the game’s first star as the host Warriors posted a 4-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. He scored his 17th goal of the season in that one.
——
The Medicine Hat Tigers were without F Chad Butcher on Wednesday night as he served a one-game suspension after he was hit with a charging major and game misconduct on Tuesday night during a 5-4 shootout victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen. Butcher was tossed at 5:55 of the second period. Originally, the penalty on the on-line scoresheet was for a headshot, but it later was changed. . . .
The Regina Pats played without D Connor Hobbs on Wednesday night in Brandon after he was given a one-game suspension for a kneeing major and game misconduct during a 7-4 victory over the visiting Wheat Kings on Tuesday. Hobbs had himself a busy night before leaving, as he scored a goal and also was involved in two fights. . . .
Kevin Constantine, the head coach of the Everett Silvertips, has been fined $500 by the WHL after he was tossed from a Tuesday night game against the Vancouver Giants in Langley, B.C. Injury bug bites Giants . . . A scout's coldest rinks . . . Weatherill hot in Kent

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TAKING NOTE

Our countdown to the big day continues with . . . John Lennon and Happy Xmas (War Is Over). . . . It’s right here.
——
The Calgary Hitmen put together their annual Christmas video and this time they brought in some help from their front office. It’s fun and it’s right here.
———
F Ashton Rome (Moose Jaw, Red Deer, Kamloops, 2002-06) has been released by the Iserlohn Roosters (Germany, DEL). He had three goals in nine games.
-———
Three WHL players were released from the Canadian national junior team’s selection camp following a 3-0 victory over a team of Canadian university all-stars in Boisbriand, Que., on Tuesday afternoon.
F Brett Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors, who scored one of Team Canada’s goals and was chosen as the game’s first star, F Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets and F Austin Wagner of the Regina Pats were sent home after the game.
Team Canada now has 27 players on its roster — three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 15 forwards — with five cuts still to come.
Still on the roster are goaltenders Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips and Connor Ingram of the Kamloops Blazers. Observers seem to think that Hart has a leg up on the No. 1 spot, with Ingram and Michael McNiven of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack in competition for the other spot. Ingram and McNiven are likely to split the goaltending duties tonight against the Czechs.
Other WHLers still on the roster are F Mathew Barzal (Seattle Thunderbirds), D Jake Bean (Calgary Hitmen), D Kale Clague (Brandon Wheat Kings), F Dillon Dube (Kelowna), D Noah Juulsen (Everett) and F Sam Steel (Regina).
Yesterday, Hart made four saves as he started and played the first 30 minutes. Ingram came on to play the second half and turned aside 11 shots. McNiven, playing for the U Sports side, blocked 24 shots.
Two of the three goal scorers — Howden and Victor Mete of the OHL’s London Knights — were released after the game.
——
The Edmonton Oil Kings have added F Scott Atkinson, 16, to their roster for a pre-Christmas swing into Saskatchewan. Atkinson, a fifth-round pick in the 2015 WHL bantam draft, plays for the Greater Vancouver Canadians of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. He has 14 goals and 14 assists in 20 games there. Last season, he finished with five goals and nine assists in 40 games with the Canadians. . . . Atkinson was in Edmonton’s lineup last night against the host Prince Albert Raiders.
——
Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province reports that the Vancouver Giants have a handful of players who won’t play again until after the Christmas break. . . . D Darian Skeoch (ankle) was injured during a practice last week. F Tyler Popowich, F Dawson Holt and F Johnny Wesley all suffered undisclosed injuries. GM Glen Hanlon told Ewen that Holt will be out for at least three weeks, while Wesley is gone for a month or more. . . . The Giants also are without F Radovan Bondra, who is with Slovakian national junior team. . . . They also have brought in F Hunor Torzsok, 16, from the Delta Hockey Academy. Torzsok, who was born in Budapest, Hungary, is in his second season at Delta. He has five goals and six assists in 14 games with the prep team in the Canada Sport School Hockey League. . . . Ewen’s story is right here.
——
Mike Fraser, who scouts for the Brandon Wheat Kings out of Edmonton, also writes a weekly column for the Brandon-based Westman Journal. In his latest jottings, he discusses “my coldest scouting rink visits on the Prairies.” If you think you’ve been in a chilly arena or two, well, you may want to check this out right here.
——
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet filed his latest 30 Thoughts essay on Tuesday afternoon, and he leads off with a piece that involves possible NHL interest in the League of Legends. . . . You may check it out right here.

McKay has served one game. He will be eligible to return on Dec. 28 when the Chiefs play host to the Seattle Thunderbirds. . . .
F Cole Sanford has left the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles to attend the U of Alberta, where he will play with the Golden Bears. The AHL’s San Antonio Rampage had assigned him to the Eagles for whom he had seven goals and eight assists in 19 games. In 260 regular-season WHL games (2012-16), 230 with the Medicine Hat Tigers and the last 30 with the Regina Pats, the native of Vernon, B.C., put up 126 goals and 123 assists.

———
G Lasse Petersen, acquired by the Red Deer Rebels from the Everett Silvertips on Thursday, ran into weather problems so wasn’t able to travel in time to join his new teammates on Friday. . . . The right here.
Rebels entertained the Moose Jaw Warriors last night. . . . Brent Sutter, the owner, general manager and head coach in Red Deer, acquired Petersen because G Tyson Verhelst, 19, who was picked up from the Spokane Chiefs, looks to be out on a long-term basis. . . . “It’s an unfortunate situation with Tyson and we don’t know what his future is going to bring,” Sutter told Greg Meachem of reddeerrebels.com. “He’s back home now and will be evaluated on a regular basis. We couldn’t be left in a position where we’re hoping he might be back in two or three weeks, a month, whatever. It’s such an unknown thing.“It’s unfortunate for Tyson, but we needed to move forward and add someone to the group and we were fortunate enough to acquire a goalie who has some experience in the league.” . . . Meachem’s complete story is
——
F Lane Pederson’s three-year entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes carries NHL salaries of US$610,000, $685,000 and $685,000, according to generalfanager.com. . . . Pederson, who plays for the Swift Current Broncos, agreed to the deal on Thursday. . . . The AHL salary in each of the three years is $70,000. . . . There also is a $105,000 signing bonus, payable in three annual installments.

Last season, the Las Vegas native had 16 points, including three goals, in 69 games with the Warriors. . . . Last night, in his first game, he picked up on assist and won four of five faceoffs in a 4-2 victory over the host Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. . . . His father, Ken, and brother, Gage, both are former WHLers. . . .
——
Brennan Tutt, who had a brief stint with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 2009-10, is one of three men in custody after what, according to the St. George, Utah, News, “is believed to be the biggest meth bust in Utah history.” . . . Tutt, 24, is from Airdrie. . . . The three were pulled over near Provo after police officers, with the help of a dog, found 236 pounds of methamphetamine, some steroids and $66,000. . . . According to The News, the meth had “an estimated wholesale value of $1.5 million and a street value of between $7 million and $15 million.” . . . Tutt was pointless during his stint with the Thunderbirds. . . . The News story is right here.
——
The Tri-City Americans have dropped D Landon Fuller from their roster. He now is with the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Fuller, 17, is from 100 Mile House, B.C. He was pointless in one game this season. He got into two games last season and also was pointless. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Fuller was a fifth-round selection in the 2014 WHL bantam draft.
