WHL playoffs nearing . . . Krebs family reunion . . . New hockey team in Nanaimo

F Axel Blomqvist (Lethbridge, Victoria, Moose Jaw, 2012-15) has signed for the rest of this season with Kristianstad (Sweden, Division 1). He had been released Sunday at his request by Södertälje (Sweden, Allsvenskan). He was pointless in seven games there.
———

All of the WHL’s 22 teams have either played two-thirds of their regular season or are within an outing or two of the 48-game mark.
So . . . let us pause for a look at the playoff picture.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
East Division: The Regina Pats are atop the division, four points ahead of the Moose Jaw Warriors and with four games in hand. Regina has six regulation-time losses; the Warriors have a dozen. Regina’s point percentage is .784; Moose Jaw’s is .677. Yes, it will be hard for the Warriors to reach the top. . . . The Swift Current Broncos are third, seven points behind Moose Jaw and seven ahead of the Brandon Wheat Kings, who have three games in hand. The Wheat Kings are in possession of the conference’s first wild-card spot. They are five points in front of the Saskatoon Blades. . . . We could be looking at Moose Jaw and Swift Current in the first round, with the Wheat Kings crossing over to play the Central Division’s first-place finisher. . . . The Saskatoon Blades have won five in a row and are in position to get into the playoffs for the first time since the spring of 2013. If they stay in the conference’s second wild-card spot, they likely would meet up with Regina in the first round. Could that fire up what once was a tremendous rivalry?
Central Division: The Medicine Hat Tigers hold down first place, but are only four points ahead of the hard-charging Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Tigers are without D David Quenneville and D Ty Schultz, both of whom suffered broken bones while blocking shots. The Hurricanes have points in eight straight games (6-0-2), but the Tigers have one game in hand. They will meet each other three more times, including a home-and-home series on the regular-season’s final weekend. . . . The Red Deer Rebels, whose season has been a myriad of inconsistencies, are headed to a third-place finish. . . . Three of the division’s six teams end up on the outside looking in. The Calgary Hitmen are four points out of a playoff spot, while the Edmonton Oil Kings have trended the wrong way since the trade deadline, and the Kootenay Ice won’t make it. Again.
——
WESTERN CONFERENCE
B.C. Division: The Prince George Cougars lead the division by 10 points over the Kamloops Blazers, who hold two games in hand. The Cougars, who beat the Vancouver Giants, 2-1 in a shootout, in Langley, B.C., on Monday night, will play three games in Alberta this weekend before going home for six in a row — doubleheaders with the Kelowna Rockets, Vancouver and the Spokane Chiefs. The Cougars and Blazers will meet five more times. Yes, they will go home-and-home to finish the regular season. . . . The Blazers are three points ahead of Kelowna, with the Victoria Royals two points in back of the Rockets. . . . Victoria holds the conference’s first wild-card spot at the moment, nine points ahead of the Portland Winterhawks. So it would seem that playoff spot will go to a B.C. Division team. . . . Vancouver is nine points out of a playoff spot.
U.S. Division: The Everett Silvertips lead the way by eight points and have five games in hand on the Tri-City Americans. The Silvertips have yet to experience their six-game East Division swing, one on which the Americans went 6-0-0. . . . Tri-City is seven points ahead of the Seattle Thunderbirds, who hold six games in hand even though their eastern trip is behind them. . . . Seattle is a comfortable seven points ahead of Portland and the Spokane Chiefs, who are tied for the conference’s second wild-card spot. It could well be that either Portland or Spokane won’t make it, with the survivor getting Everett or Prince George, whichever has the better record, in the first round.

It was a big night for the Krebs family on Friday when the Kootenay Ice paid a visit to the Tri-City Americans. . . . Peyton, the first overall selection in the WHL’s 2016 bantam draft, was in the Ice’s lineup. Dakota, 17, is a defenceman with the Americans. . . . Sister Maddison, 19, an up-and-coming country singer, handled both anthems. . . . Their parents, Cindy and Greg, along with another son, 13-year-old Drew, were on hand to take it all in. . . . “That was the hardest game I have had to watch,” Cindy told Annie Fowler of the Tri-City Herald. “I didn’t want Dakota to get scored on, but I wanted Peyton to score — just not against Dakota.” . . . Neither Peyton nor Dakota garnered a point but Dakota got bragging rights with a 7-4 victory. . . . Fowler’s story is right here.
The Ice returned Peyton to the midget AAA Foothills Bisons on Sunday, while also returning D Loeden Schaufler, 16, to the midget AAA Notre Dame Hounds of Wilcox Sask. . . . Still, the Ice has six players on the injury list, with F Barrett Sheen, D Nikita Radzivilyuk and D Sam Huston all out a week or more, with D Cale Fleury, F Vince Loschiavo and D Ryan Pouliot all day-to-day.
——
There will be a new hockey team in Nanaimo when the 2017-18 season arrives. The Vancouver Island University Mariners will play out of the Ice Centre, which is near the school’s campus. The team will bring membership in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League to six teams. Other teams play out of Selkirk College in Castlegar, B.C., Trinity Western U in Langley, Eastern Washington U in Cheney, Simon Fraser U in Burnaby and the U of Victoria. . . . Steven Paul is the Mariners’ volunteer general manager and head coach. . . . The Mariners will operate as a club team, meaning it will responsible for its own operating budget. . . . The team will hold a spring camp, April 7-9. . . . The original roster could include D Ryan Coghlan, 21, a student at VIU who has played in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders.

Coaching

The QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques have fired head coach Mario Duhamel, replacing him with assistant coach Éric Landry. Duhamel was in in his first season with the Olympiques, having replaced Benoit Groulx, who now is the head coach of Syracuse Crunch, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. . . . Duhamel spent four seasons (2009-13) as the head coach of the Drummondville Voltigeurs and was an assistant coach with Canada’s national junior team at the 2013 World Junior Championship. He also worked with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche as the video coach for two seasons (2013-15). Last season, he was the assistant general manager with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. . . . Landry, who is from Gatineau, has been with the Olympiques since 2012 after he ended a pro career that included NHL stops with the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. . . . The Olympiques, who have lost four straight games, are 19-24-4.

MONDAY’S GAME:

At Langley, B.C., the Prince George Cougars scored three times in a shootout to beat the Vancouver Giants 2-1. . . . F Nikita Popugaev, F Radovan Bondra and F Jansen Harkins all scored for the Cougars in the shootout, with F James Malm and F Brayden Watts counting for the Giants. . . . F Jared Bethune (13) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 5:45 of the second period and they nursed that lead into the final five minutes of the third period. . . . The Giants tied it when F Dawson Holt scored his sixth goal, shorthanded, at 15:49 of the third period. . . . G Nick McBride made 30 saves for the Cougars, three fewer than Vancouver’s Ryan Kubic. . . . Each team was 0-5 on the PP. . . . Vancouver had D Bowen Byram, the third overall pick in the 2016 bantam draft, in its lineup. He has 16 points, including 14 assists, in 11 games with the Yale Hockey Academy’s prep team in the CSSHL. . . . The Giants had eight scratches, including F Tyler Benson, D Darian Skeoch, D Matt Barberis and F Ty Ronning. . . . The Cougars had D Sam Ruopp back in their lineup. . . . The Cougars lead the eight-game season series 5-1-0, while the Giants are 1-4-1. . . . Prince George (34-13-3) had lost its previous two games (0-1-1). The Cougars lead the overall standings by two points over the Everett Silvertips and Regina Pats. . . . Vancouver (17-27-4) had lost two in a row and is nine points from a playoff spot. . . . The Cougars next play Friday against the host Red Deer Rebels and will stop off in Banff for a couple of days en route. After Red Deer, the Cougars will play a Saturday-Sunday night-day doubleheader against the Edmonton Oil Kings. . . . Announced attendance: 2,964.

THURSDAY’S GAME:

In Brandon, the Edmonton Oil Kings, the defending Memorial Cup champions, scored two first-period goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Wheat Kings. . . . It was Game 1 of their series, with Game 2 scheduled for Brandon tonight. . . . This is the only first-round series being played with a 2-3-2 format, with the middle three games scheduled for Edmonton. That means tonight’s game takes on even more importance. . . . Brandon was 27-3-6 at home in the regular season. . . . The Oil Kings scored 11 seconds in when F Tyler Robertson, who had one goal in his previous 22 games, found the net. . . . F Brett Pollock made it 2-0 at 11:55. . . . Brandon F Peter Quenneville scored a PP goal at 17:53 of the second to get his guys back in it. . . . Pollock scored off a PP rebound at 1:35 of the third for a 3-1 lead. . . . F Lane Bauer provided more insurance for the visitors at 9:07. . . . Edmonton D Dysin Mayo had two assists, while Pollock had one for a three-point night. . . . Oil Kings G Tristan Jarry was sharp in making 25 saves, five fewer than Brandon’s Jordan Papirny. . . . Edmonton was 1-for-2 on the PP; Brandon was 1-for-4. . . . Brandon had won three of four regular-season meetings, although the teams had only met once since Nov. 22. . . . The Wheat Kings had F Stelio Mattheos in the lineup. The Winnipegger was the first selection in the 2014 bantam draft. . . . Edmonton’s lineup included 15 players from last season’s championship club. . . . WHL commissioner Ron Robison presented the Wheat Kings with the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy prior to the game. The trophy is for finishing atop the overall standings in the regular season. . . . Attendance was announced as 3,086. That is 809 below Brandon’s regular-season average crowd.
———

Two WHL teams are looking for head coaches. . . . Earlier in the week, the Vancouver Giants revealed that Claude Noel wouldn’t be returning as their head coach. . . . Peter Anholt, who finished the season as the general manager and head coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, has confirmed to Paul Kingsmith of Global TV that he won’t be back on the bench. Anholt is involved in contract negotiations with the Hurricanes. Assuming he gets a deal as GM, he will hire a head coach and a head scout. . . . There’s more from Kingsmith right here.
———
The Brandon Sun has covered a lot of Brandon Wheat Kings playoff games over the years. And it always, always, always has gotten a story from the game into the next day’s paper. That streak may come to an end next week when the Wheat Kings’ first-round series with the Edmonton Oil Kings moves to the Alberta capital. . . . Sportsnet requested a change in starting times for Games 4 and, if necessary, 5, both of which are scheduled to be played in Rexall Place on March 31 and April 1. Rather than starting at 7 p.m., the games are to begin at 8 o’clock. . . . With the difference in time zones, that is 9 o’clock in Brandon. . . . The Sun’s deadline is 11:05 p.m., and it’s doubtful that it can be changed enough to make a difference.
———
The Tampa Bay Lightning has signed F Brayden Point, 19, of the Moose Jaw Warriors to a three-year, entry-level NHL contract. Point also signed an ATO (amateur tryout) with the Syracuse Crunch, the Lightning’s AHL affiliate, and will finish the season there. . . . The Lightning selected Point in the third round of the 2014 NHL draft. . . . This season, he had 87 points, including 38 goals, in 60 games with the Warriors. In 204 career games, he has 236 points, including 99 goals. . . . From Calgary, he was a member of Team Canada as it won gold at the 2015 WJC in Montreal and Toronto.
———
The Calgary Flames have signed F Austin Carroll, who turned 21 on Thursday, to an entry-level deal. He led the Victoria Royals in goals (38) and points (77) in the regular season. Carroll, from Calgary, was a seventh-round pick by the Flames in the 2014 NHL draft. . . . In 268 games with the Royals over four seasons, Carroll had 196 points, including 95 goals.
———
The Winnipeg Jets have assigned F Axel Blomqvist of the Moose Jaw Warriors to the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps. Blomqvist, 20, was acquired by Moose from the Victoria Royals during the season. From Sweden, he finished the season with 59 points, including 25 goals, in 61 games. The 6-foot-6, 212-pounder was a NHL free agent when he signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Jets prior to the 2013-14 season.
———
The Edmonton Oilers have signed D Ben Betker of the Everett Silvertips to a three-year, entry-level NHL contract. Betker, 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, was a sixth-round pick in the NHL’s 2013 draft. From Cranbrook, Betker, 20, had 31 points, including six goals, in 64 gamers this season. In 201 career games, he has 58 points, including 14 goals.
———
The AHL’s Toronto Marlies have signed F Jack Rodewald of the Moose Jaw Warriors to an ATO (amateur tryout) for the remainder of this season and to an AHL contract for 2015-16. Rodewald, who turned 21 on Feb. 14, had career highs in goals (35), assists (50) and points (85) this season, all in 71 games. . . . In 255 career games, he put up 166 points, including 76 goals.
———
Cody Nickolet, over at Dub From Above, reports that only six WHLers who were selected in the NHL’s 2013 draft haven’t signed NHL contracts. Those six are F Jackson Houck of the Vancouver Giants (Edmonton Oilers); D Eric Roy of the Brandon Wheat Kings (Calgary Flames); D Mitch Wheaton of the Kelowna Rockets (Detroit Red Wings); G Brendan Burke of the Calgary Hitmen (Arizona Coyotes); D Mark McNulty of the Kamloops Blazers (Detroit); and D Kyle Burroughs of the Medicine Hat Tigers (New York Islanders).
———

The Medicine Hat Tigers open a first-round series against the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Saturday. The Tigers were a bit banged up down the stretch, but reports out of Medicine Hat indicate that F Anthony Ast, F Matt Bradley and D Tommy Vannelli will be available for Game 1. . . . The Tigers will be without D Ty Lewington, their captain, as he serves a one-game WHL suspension. . . .
The Kootenay Ice and Calgary Hitmen open their first-round series tonight in Calgary. The game will be televised by Shaw with Dan Russell calling the play and Bill Wilms riding shotgun. . . .
The Tri-City Americans are huge underdogs as they open a first-round series with the Rockets in Kelowna tonight. The Americans have five injured players who aren’t expected to play — F Parker Bowles, D Carter Cochrane, D Riley Hillis, F Braden Purtill and F Taylor Vickerman. All five are said to be done for the season. . . . The Rockets aren’t expected to have D Josh Morrissey back for this series, but F Justin Kirkland, who hasn’t played since Feb. 14, might return. . . .
The Spokane Chiefs go into these playoffs having lost eight straight playoff games. The Chiefs open in Everett against the Silvertips tonight. . . . Spokane was swept by the Portland Winterhawks in the first round in 2013 and then was swept by the Victoria Royals a year ago. . . . The Chiefs also go into these playoffs having lost their last five regular-season games. . . .
The starting time for Game 3 between the Medicine Hat Tigers and the host Red Deer Rebels on March 31 has been changed. Originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, it now is listed as TBD (to be determined). . . . Why? According to a note from the Rebels, it is “to accommodate the possibility of a TV broadcast of the game. . . . Game time will either be 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.”

THE COACHING GAME:

The OHL’s Flint, Mich., Firebirds have signed Terry Christensen as general manager and John Gruden as head coach. The Firebirds are the former Plymouth Whalers franchise. . . . Gruden, 44, has been in USA Hockey’s program. . . . The Firebirds have kept assistant general manager Joe Stefan and head scout Dave McParlan, both of whom were with the Whalers.

In 268 career regular-season games, Goulbourne has 118 points, 55 of them goals. The Edmonton native is one of the WHL’s top power forwards.
———
The Florida Panthers had both of their goaltenders — Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya — go down with injuries during a game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Confusion reigned. At one point, Panthers goaltending coach Rob Tallas, who played three seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds (1991-94), was dressed as the backup. George Michael of the Miami Herald has more right here.

If you were wondering, the WHL playoffs will begin on Thursday, March 26. In a Tuesday news release regarding the deadline for fans to order playoff tickets, the Brandon Wheat Kings revealed that their first two home games will be played Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27. . . . The way things are right now, the Edmonton Oil Kings will be providing the opposition in those games. . . .

He didn’t play over the weekend. . . . According to Punkari, F Tanner Eberle, who left a Saturday game with an injury, may play tonight, depending on how he does in the morning skate. . . . Meanwhile, the status of D Tyler Brown and F Jaimen Yakubowski has yet to be determined. They were injured on Friday. . . .
The Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament (KIBIHT) is adding a Premier Division, meaning it will have three divisions in its 2016 tournament. According to KIBIHT, the Premier Division will comprise eight teams from academies, winter clubs and top-ranked teams from across Canada and the U.S. . . . Edmonton head coach Steve Hamilton gave Jarry full credit for earning his team the loser point. “We owe Tristan for the point tonight,” Hamilton said on the team’s website. “There’s no question about that. He was the most substantial difference maker in the lineup tonight. It’s disappointing that Tristan gave us that kind of effort and we weren’t able to respond in front of him.” . . . Needham and Sideroff have played almost the entire season with F Cole Ully on one of the WHL’s top lines. . . . The Hitmen (40-19-5) are 6-1-0 on their franchise record 11-game road swing. They left Calgary on Feb. 19 and had travelled 2,579 km when they left Kamloops for Prince George last night. . . . Calgary has won 17 of its last 19 games and is 13-1-1 on the road since Jan. 4. . . . The Blazers (24-33-7) had won their previous two games. . . .

Tuesday's WHL trade roundup . . .

The WHL trade deadline arrives on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT, and over the last two days a whack of deals have been made.
In fact, if you go back to Dec. 10, when the Prince Albert Raiders and Kelowna Rockets got together on a deal that had D Josh Morrissey moving west, WHL teams have combined for 19 trades.
Unofficially, those deals have involved 38 players, 26 bantam draft picks and five conditional draft picks.
What follows is a look at what transpired on Tuesday . . .
The much talked and written about trade of German F Leon Draisaitl to the Kelowna Rockets finally was announced.
The deal involved F Kris Schmidli, who was with the Swiss team at the World Junior Championship, so couldn’t be announced until the tournament ended.
The Prince Albert Raiders dealt Draisaitl, 19, to the Rockets for Schmidli, 18, D Dalton Yorke, 18, and three bantam draft picks -- a first-rounder in 2015, a fourth-rounder in 2016 and a conditional fourth-rounder in 2016 or 2017.
This is the second major trade between these teams in a month. On Dec. 10, the Rockets acquired Morrissey and F Gage Quinney for D Jesse Lees, F Austin Glover and two bantam draft picks.
Draisaitl, the third overall selection in the NHL’s 2014 draft, had been with the Edmonton Oilers. Last season, his second with the Raiders, he had 105 points, including 38 goals, in 64 games.
“He’s a great big centre who’s going add some tremendous depth to our
team,” Bruce Hamilton, the Rockets president and general manager, told Doyle Potenteau of the Kelowna Daily Courier. Hamilton, a member of Hockey Canada’s management group, had just returned from the WJC. “Rourke Chartier is one of the premier players in the league right now, and this guy certainly
brings the same qualities he does. And he’s an experienced player; he has
30-some games of NHL experience under his belt now, so I think he’ll fit
in real well.
“I’ve had to listen to Josh Morrissey for two weeks telling me what to do
to get him. He fits in real well with him, too. He’s a real solid person;
he’ll be a great player to have here. And they’ll fit into our community
real well.”
Draisaitl is expected to be in the Rockets’ lineup Wednesday night as they play host to the Vancouver Giants. (Meanwhile, the Rockets aren’t expected to dress D Madison Bowey and D Josh Morrissey, both of whom won gold with Canada at the WJC.)
Schmidli, from Zurich, has 17 points, including five goals, in 33 games this season. Last season, as a freshman, he had 35 points, nine of them goals, in 68 games.
Yorke, from Maple Ridge, B.C., is in his second WHL season. He has two assists in 26 games, after earning four assists in 40 games last season.
The Raiders are at home to the Moose Jaw Warriors tonight.
---
The Raiders then dealt Czech D Tomas Andrlik, 19, to the Prince George Cougars for a 12th-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft.
Andrlik had 27 points, including four goals, in 109 regular-season games with the Raiders.
That move left both teams with two import players.
---
The Saskatoon Blades were involved in a pair of trades.
First, they sent F Alex Forsberg, who turned 20 on Sunday, a third-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft -- it originally belonged to the Portland Winterhawks -- and a fourth-round pick in 2016 to the Victoria Royals for F Brayden Dunn, 16, and a first-round pick in the 2017 bantam draft.
Forsberg, from Waldheim, Sask., was selected first overall in the 2010 bantam draft by the Prince George Cougars. He was acquired by the Blades prior to this season, and has 33 points, including 13 goals, in 36 games. In 167 regular-season games, he has 120 points, 43 of them goals.
With Forsberg gone, the Blades expect that freshman F Wyatt Sloboshan will play a larger role.
Dunn, from Calgary, was a fourth-round pick by Victoria in the 2013 bantam draft. He is playing with the midget AAA Calgary Northstars.
Then, the Blades dealt D Adam Henry, 20, to the Portland Winterhawks for a second-round pick in 2017.
Henry began this season with the Seattle Thunderbirds before being traded to the Blades. He has 22 points, three of them goals, in 35 games with Saskatoon. He also has played with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
In 208 career regular-season games, he has 97 points, including 19 goals.
After that deal, the Blades were left with two 20-year-olds on their roster -- F Sam McKechnie and F Brett Stovin.
---
The Kamloops Blazers acquired D Brycen Martin, 18, from the Swift Current Broncos for D Josh Connolly, 19, and a second-round pick in the 2016 draft.
Martin, a third-round selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL’s 2014 draft, was in his third season with the Broncos. They took him with the second overall pick of the 2011 bantam draft.
This season, in 39 games, Martin, a Calgarian, has 16 points, including two goals. In 181 regular-season games, he has 82 points, 10 of them goals.
Connolly, from Prince George, was a third-round pick by Kamloops in the 2010 bantam draft. An offensive defenceman, he was the Blazers’ third-leading scorer, with 34 points, including five goals, in 39 games.
In 164 games with the Blazers, Connolly put up 85 points, including 17 goals. He is the younger brother of former Prince George Cougars F Brett Connolly, who now is with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning.
“We’ve been looking for a right-handed shot that can play the power play,” Mark Lamb, the Broncos’ GM and head coach, said in a news release. “Connolly is a solid player all over the ice, offence and defence, who can play for us next (season). The price for a guy like that is a Brycen Martin.”
Earlier in the day, the Blazers dealt D Connor Clouston, 18, to the Moose Jaw Warriors for a fifth-round selection in the 2017 bantam draft. Clouston, the son of Shaun Clouston, the Medicine Hat Tigers’ GM and head coach, was a third-round pick in the 2011 bantam draft. Connor and Warriors F Torrin White also are step-brothers. He had a goal and four assists in 81 regular-season games with the Blazers.
The Blazers’ decision to keep D Dawson Davidson, 16, for the remainder of the season left them with nine defencemen, so they were able to move Clouston. Davidson, who had been the captain of the midget AAA Moose Jaw Generals, has two goals in four games with Kamloops.
---
The Portland Winterhawks traded G Brendan Burke, 19, for G Evan Johnson, 18, and a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft.
Burke was in his fourth season with Portland. This season, he was 7-8-3, 3.63, .888. His career numbers are 72-25-10, 2.95, .902. He has eight career shutouts. Burke, the son of former NHL G Sean Burke, was a sixth-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2013 NHL draft.
He will join Mack Shields as the goaltenders on Calgary’s roster.
In 15 games with the Hitmen, Johnson, a freshman, was 5-3-2, 2.84, .894.
Of late, G Adin Hill had taken over the starter’s role in Portland. He has put up shutouts in each of his last two starts.
---
The Lethbridge Hurricanes traded F Taylor Cooper, 19, to the Regina Pats for D Brady Reagan, 17.
Cooper, from Sherwood Park, Alta., has 28 points, including 12 goals, in 38 games this season. He was a sixth-round pick by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 2010 bantam draft. In 167 regular-season games, he has 77 points, including 33 goals.
Reagan, a second-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft, has a goal and six assists in 61 regular-season games. He’s from Blackie, Alta.
The Pats also have recalled D Ryan Krushen, 16, from the midget AAA Sherwood Park Kings. He played in three games with the Pats earlier in the season.

After dropping a 6-1 decision to the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Tuesday night, the Moose Jaw Warriors announced a three-player swap with the Victoria Royals.
The Warriors acquired Swedish F Axel Blomqvist, 19, and two bantam draft picks — a third in 2015 that originally belonged to Kamloops and a fifth in 2017 — for Russian D Alexey Sleptsov, 18, G Justin Paulic, 19, and a sixth-round pick in 2015.
The 6-foot-6, 212-pound Blomqvist has 29 points, 14 of them goals, in 34 games this season. He also played with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 158 regular-season games, he has 118 points, 45 of them goals.
Sleptsov, a sophomore from Moscow, has 18 assists in 34 games this season. In 100 regular-season games, he has 43 points, including four goals. In Victoria, he will be reunited with D Travis Brown, who was his partner in Moose Jaw last season before he was dealt to the Royals.
Paulic, from Thompson, Man., has appeared in 18 games this season, going 6-8-2, 3.50, .895. He has one shutout. In 132 WHL appearances, he is 40-61-19, 3.39, .895 with the one shutout. He was an eighth-round pick by Moose Jaw in the 2010 bantam draft.
With Paulic on the move, the Warriors have brought in G Brody Willms from the Okanagan Hockey Academy to back up Zach Sawchenko for the remainder of this season. Willms, 16, is from Coquitlam, B.C. He was an eighth-round pick by the Warriors in the 2013 bantam draft.

Concern over attendance figures? . . . Some wine in Spokane . . . Rankin red hot for Hitmen

“During the seven seasons of minor-pro hockey with the Victoria Salmon Kings in the ECHL, it was an article of faith among some local fans that Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre would be packed every night if only the major-junior WHL would return and Islanders could once again watch a brand of hockey with which they were more familiar,” writes Cleve Dheensaw in Friday’s Victoria Times Colonist.
“Well, on Tuesday, a combined five players on the Victoria Royals and Portland Winterhawks who are prospects for Canada, Sweden, Denmark and the U.S. at the 2015 world junior championship, were on the ice for an appealing WHL game at the Memorial Centre, but only an announced gathering of 3,779 was at the 7,006-seat arena. That has been a common weekday thread this season on Blanshard Street, with empty blue and burgundy seats far outnumbering the ones with butts filling them.”
Dheensaw’s complete story is right here.
---
Going into Friday’s games only two WHL teams were showing increased ticket sales when comparing average attendance at this point in the season to last season’s final numbers.
Granted, it’s a bit like comparing apples and oranges, but it must mean something when 19 teams are showing a decrease.
The Brandon Wheat Kings, who are off to a terrific start, are averaging 3,838 fans through 13 home games; they finished last season at 3,529.
The Prince George Cougars, in their first season under new ownership, are at 2,709 through 17 games, up from last season’s final number of 1,693.
The Medicine Hat Tigers, in their final season in the Arena, have sold out (4,006) each of their 16 games, as they have done for the past number of seasons. The Tigers are scheduled to move into the 6,500-seat Regional Event Centre in September.
Prior to last night’s games, the WHL had played 39.2 per cent of its season; it was averaging 4,104 fans through 311 games. Last season, it finished with an average of 4,488.
Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province wrote in late November that Giants owner Ron Toigo had admitted to losing $400,000 in each of the previous two seasons. That being the case, one can only imagine what that number might be when this season is one. In 2012-13, the Giants’ average attendance was 7,205, a number that slid to 6,266 last season and this season is at 4,879.
Keep in mind, too, that WHL attendance figures indicate the number of tickets sold, not the number of people in attendance. In many instances, there are more empty seats in buildings than the announced attendance figures would seem to indicate. That, of course, means fewer people are purchasing team merchandise or spending money at the concession stands.
All of this can’t be good news for WHL teams, what with expenses seemingly not falling while new revenue streams are becoming harder to find.
What has happened recently can perhaps be referred to as The Netflix Factor.
In the past, I have alluded to a conversation I had with then-WHL president Ed Chynoweth a long time ago, and I will mention it again. The chat followed the introduction of VCRs as consumer products. It was than that Chynoweth said WHL teams no longer could open the doors to their arenas and expect the fans to show up.
Of course, in those days, a consumer’s major decision was VHS or Beta. Who knew then what minor league teams who depend so much on ticket sales for survival would be faced with in terms of competition?
“In junior and minor pro, everyone is facing a marketplace that has a ton of entertainment choices,” Victoria general manager Cam Hope told Dheensaw. “Our job is convincing people not to sit in front of their TVs, where they have hundreds of choices a week.
“It’s a struggle for everyone involved in our level of the sports business, which is so ticket-revenue driven. We don’t have the TV and sponsorship packages that provide revenue streams for the major-league teams.”
The struggle to get people away from their TVs isn’t going to end any time soon.
---
Here is a team-by-team look at WHL attendance, showing the number of home games each team had played this season (going into Friday night) and the average attendance, with last season’s ranking and final average attendance in parentheses:

And now for something completely different . . .
If you are at all into wine, you may be interested in the fact that the Spokane Chiefs and Arbor Crest Wine Cellars have, for a second time, come up with Spokane Chiefs Wine -- aka Top Shelf Red.
According to a news release, “Top Shelf Red is a red blend (36% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Sangiovese, 9% Merlot) produced and bottled by Arbor Crest Wine Cellars in Spokane. A portion from each bottle sold will go directly to Chiefs Care, a part of the Chiefs organization dedicated to giving back to the community of Spokane and for the continuing education of the Chiefs players.”
For more info, visit the Chiefs’ website right here.

The Spokane Chiefs are likely to have D Jake Toporowski in their lineup tonight when they meet the visiting Kootenay Ice. Toporowski, 16, was a third-round selection in the 2013 bantam draft. A native of Bettendorf, Iowa, he is the son of former Chiefs D Kerry Toporowski, who is something of a WHL legend thanks to 889 penalty minutes and 31 points in 130 games over two seasons (1989-91). . . . Jake now is playing for the junior B Spokane Braves of the Kootenay International Junior League.
--- The Victoria Royals have signed G Dylan Myskiw, who was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 WHL bantam draft. Myskiw, from Winnipeg, plays for the midget AAA Winnipeg Thrashers, where he has seven victories, one shutout, a 2.20 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 18 games.
---
The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired D Raymond Grewal, 19, from the Prince George Cougars for a 12th-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft. Grewal, from Prince George, had 19 points, including one goal, in 129 regular-season games with the Cougars. He has been with the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings since being released by the Cougars earlier in the season. . . . Grewal didn’t play for the Raiders last night in Kamloops.
---
F Tyler Jeanson of the MJHL's Portage Terriers has committed to Colgate University, which is located in Hamilton, N.Y., where he will play for the Raiders. . . . Jeanson, a 17-year-old from Graysville, Man., was selected by the Kamloops Blazers in the ninth round of the 2012 WHL bantam draft.
