Goaltender credited with a snipe; Cougars are rolling

D Harlan Pratt (Seattle, Red Deer, Prince Albert, Regina, Portland, 1994-99) has signed with Löwen Frankfurt (Germany, Oberliga West). Last season, with Alba Volan Székesfehérvár (Hungary, Austria Erste Bank Liga), Pratt had 28 points, seven of them goals, in 53 games. . . .
G Ian Gordon (Swift Current, Saskatoon, 1992-95) has signed with Löwen Frankfurt (Germany, Oberliga West) as a precautionary third goalie. Last season, Gordon was with Ingolstadt, going 2.49 and .909 in 33 games. He presently is the goaltending coach with the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL). . . .
(Note: Frankfurt’s signings of Pratt and Gordon are both as precautions. The signing deadline in Germany was Friday if a player is to be eligible to play this season. . . . Frankfurt’s record this season is 34-0-0, with one overtime victory. It has scored 267 goals and allowed 60 as it pushes for promotion to DEL2 for next season. . . . Frankfurt’s GM is Rich Chernomaz (Saskatoon, Victoria Cougars, 1979-83). Chernomaz also was the head coach of Hungary at WJC D2 this season.)

BCHLIn the MJHL, the Selkirk Steelers’ franchise-record winning streak ended at 20 games as they dropped a 5-4 shootout decision to the host Portage Terriers on Saturday night. The Steelers tied the MJHL’s single-season record on Friday night, beating the Steinbach Pistons 3-2, and now share that mark with the 2012-13 Dauphin Kings, who also put together a 20-game winning streak.
---
G Chris Driedger of the Calgary Hitmen, who was credited with a goal on Saturday night, set a franchise record in the first period of Friday’s 7-4 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings. During that period, he made his 3,375th career save, breaking the record that had been held by Martin Jones (2006-10). . . . Jones now is with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.
---
Neate Sager has more right here on the Friday night fisticuffs between F Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice and D Josh Morrissey of the Prince Albert Raiders. As Sager points out, not only was it the first bout of Reinhart’s WHL career, but he had spent only 65 seconds in the penalty box to that point in the entire season.

If you are in the market for a major junior team, the Sarnia Observer reports that the OHL’s Sarnia Sting franchise is for sale. That story is right here.

TODAY’S WHL GAMES (all times local):

Seattle (32-16-5), which is 8-2-0 in its last 10, is fourth, two points in back of the Victoria Royals. . . .

In Everett, F Ivan Nikolishin scored his 13th goal, via the PP, at 4:24 of OT to give the Silvertips a 5-4 victory over the Spokane Chiefs. . . . Everett had lost its last six games. . . . Everett F Kohl Bauml had a goal, his 12th, and two assists, while F Josh Winquist scored his 33rd goal and set up two others. . . . Spokane F Mike Aviani completed a three-game WHL suspension for a headshot on Kamloops D Connor Clouston on Tuesday. . . . KHLF Patrik Valcak (Lethbridge, Kelowna, 2003-04) was released after an unsuccessful tryout with Dinamo Riga (Latvia, KHL). He led Poland’s Ekstraliga in scoring and assists last season, getting 15 goals and 41 assists in 38 games for Polish champions Cracovia Krakow. THE COACHING GAME:

You likely have had enough of A-Roid, Biogenesis and all the rest of that stuff.
But I am going to provide you with a couple of links to stories that are well worth reading.
This one right here, from Erik Malinowski of BuzzFeed.com, details what happened on Aug. 21, 1998, which is when writer Steve Wilstein of The Associated Press wrote about the bottle of androstenedione in the locker of St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire.
And then here’s this piece right here, by Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. . . . This is an intriguing look at Alex Rodriguez and what makes him tick.

A few Memorial Cup-related thoughts from Rob Vanstone of the Regina Leader-Post:
“There is not a classier owner in junior hockey than Jack Brodsky, whose family has operated the Blades since 1976. If anyone deserves a Memorial Cup ring, it is Brodsky. But if the Blades capture major-junior hockey's greatest prize despite failing to register a single WHL playoff victory, it will not be the finest moment in CHL history. There has to be a better way.
“Here is one suggestion: Continue to rotate the host leagues. The champion of the host league earns a Memorial Cup berth, and some time off while a playoff is held to determine the other finalist. If the WHL is hosting, for example, the OHL and QMJHL champions would meet to determine the other Memorial Cup participant. A best-of-seven, Stanley Cup-style Memorial Cup championship series would ensue, with games being played in the home rinks of the two finalists. Such a format would ashcan the flawed host-team exemption and reward the fans of each league champion.
“Are there glitches in this proposal? Of course. The travel would be gruelling, although the NHL has overcome such obstacles when the New Jersey Devils have met the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks for Lord Stanley's grail. There is also the question of whether a Memorial Cup final could feasibly be held in a small centre such as Swift Current, where the Credit Union i-Plex seats 2,879. But, honestly, could this proposed format be any worse than the current blueprint?”
No, it couldn’t be worse.
Yes, it is time to go to a format that features two teams in a best-of-seven final for the Memorial Cup.
That is all.
———
JUST NOTES:
The Seattle Thunderbirds will be without F Connor Honey for their next two games, including tonight’s Game 6 of a first-round series with the Kelowna Rockets. . . . Honey has been suspended for three games for a hit from behind on Kelowna D MacKenzie Johnston in Game 4 of that series. . . . Honey sat out Game 5, so has two games left to serve. . . . Johnston will be out for up to two months with a shoulder injury. . . .

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks have assigned F Mark McNeill of the Prince Albert Raiders to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. McNeill had 67 points, including 25 goals, in 65 games this season. . . . He was the 18th overall selection in the NHL’s 2011 draft. . . .

CHLF Nick Buonassisi, who finished his junior eligibility with the Brandon Wheat Kings last month, has joined the Central league’s Quad City Mallards. Buonassisi had 34 points in 69 games this season. . . . The Mallards are trailing the Fort Worth Brahmas 2-0 in a first-round best-of-seven series and have suffered two serious injuries. . . . The series resumes Wednesday in the Quad Cities.

THE COACHING GAME:
QMJHLDanny Flynn is out as head coach of the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats, although he will stay on as the director of hockey operations. . . . The Wildcats were 42-33-3 this season, then were eliminated in five games by the Victoriaville Tigres in a first-round series. . . .

The U of Denver has fired George Gwozdecky, the long-time coach of the WCHA’s Pioneers. In his 19 years at Denver, he won two NCAA titles. Gwozdecky had one season left on a 12-year contract. . . . According to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: “DU is the only Division I hockey team to have won 20 games in each of the past 12 seasons. However, the Pioneers recently lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the past six years, part of the reason the sources said Gwozdecky was fired. An inability for the school and Gwozdecky to reach a contract extension also figured into the decision.” . . . Chambers’ complete story is right here. . . .

SJHLKeith Cassidy won’t be back as the general manager and head coach of the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins. Cassidy, 38, completed two seasons with the club and the board of directors chose not to exercise an option for a third season. . . . This season, the Bruins finished fifth in the Sherwood Division, sidelined the Kindersley Klippers in a survivor series and then lost a best-of-seven series to the Yorkton Terriers in five games. . . . Josh Lewis of the Estevan Mercury has more right here.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
D Juraj Valach (Tri-City, Vancouver, Regina, Red Deer, 2006-08) has been assigned on loan by Kometa Brno to Slavia Prague (both teams Czech Republic, Extraliga) for the rest of this season. He has one goal and three assists in 24 games for Brno this season. The "loan" is effectively a trade between the two clubs. Brno "loaned" Valach and F Tomas Pospisil to Slavia Prague; in return, Slavia has loaned D Jiri Vlasicek and F Tomas Svoboda to Brno. . . .
G Ian Gordon (Swift Current, Saskatoon, 1992-95) signed a one-year contract extension with Ingolstadt (Germany, DEL). He has a 2.65 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 16 games with Ingolstadt this season. The extension keeps Gordon in Ingolstadt through the 2012-2013 season.

There were times during my 17-year stint at the Regina Leader-Post where Rob Vanstone and I would hope in my vehicle and head for Swift Current to watch the Broncos.
We knew the chances were good we would see an entertaining hockey game. And if the game wasn’t entertaining, we knew Graham James, the Broncos' GM and head coach, would entertain us after the fact. We would, in other words, have something about which to write.
That’s what Vanstone writes about right here . . . that and a whole lot more. And I vouch for everything he writes here, because I oftentimes was right there.

Here’s part of a Chris Selley piece from the National Post:
“If fighting in the NHL is appalling and unconscionable, then what adjectives go with the situation in junior? Shouldn't this be a far bigger issue than it is? . . .
“I'm not claiming that banning staged fighting in junior hockey would necessarily get rid of it in the professional leagues, though it couldn't hurt. What I'm saying is that fighting in junior hockey has always struck me as tantamount to child abuse.”
Selley’s complete column is right here.
———
Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post had an interesting piece in Thursday’s paper involving reaction to recent developments in the Derek Boogaard story.
In the column, Harder quoted Regina Pats president Brent Parker on the role of fighting in hockey.
“Humans are creatures of habit,” Parker told Harder. “It’s so easy for us to say it has always been part of the game and it needs to be part of the game. I don’t know if it does. First and foremost we have to be concerned about the safety of our athletes. We’ve done some things as a league with our seven-point plan to make sure we’re addressing head blows. But I don’t think you will ever legislate head injuries out of contact sports. There’s a reason the helmet was invented.”
Parker also admitted that his feelings about fighting have been altered, as Harder wrote, with happenings of last summer.
“You have a different appreciation for it having attended some funerals this summer that I’d rather not have had to attend,” he said. “I think my views have changed. I guess I’ve always been a proponent of liking physical hockey and I don’t think that part has to change but the needless fights and needless shots to the head and the lack of respect for each other as players, that’s the part that needs to change. It’s not just hockey. It’s (contact) sports in general.”
Harder’s complete column is right here.

JUST NOTES:
F Colin Jacobs of the Seattle Thunderbirds will play his first game this season tonight against the visiting Prince George Cougars. He has been out since suffering an undisclosed injury in the Buffalo Sabres’ prospects camp. He was a fourth-round selection by Buffalo in the 2011 NHL draft. . . .
F Marcel Noebels of the Seattle Thunderbirds is expected to miss five WHL games as he plays for Germany at the World Junior Championship (Division I, Group A). Steve Yzerman, the general manager of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, said Thursday night that freshman F Brett Connolly will attend the Canadian national junior team’s selection camp that opens Saturday in Calgary.
Connolly, 19, has eight points, including four goals, in 27 games with the Lightning. He was the sixth overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft.
Shortly after Yzerman made the announcement, Connolly tweeted: “Well let's go get a gold medal.”
Shortly after that, he tweeted: “Thanks for all the support from the fans in Canada. We are going to do everything to bring the gold home.”
The best tweet of them all, however, came from freshman F Chase Witala of the Prince George Cougars: “there goes my chances of making team Canada as the 13th forward. #suprisedtonotgetthecampinvite”
Of course, Connolly is from Prince George and would have to play with the Cougars had the Lightning not kept him.
If you missed it, the Anaheim Ducks have assigned F Devante Smith-Pelly to Canada’s team, as well. He had five points in 26 games with the Ducks.
He played three seasons with the OHL’s Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and was a second-round pick by Anaheim in 2010.
