Outdoor game at 2018 Memorial Cup? ... USHL adjusts roster rules ... Royals, Giants in tripleheader

F Jesse Mychan (Everett, Tri-City, 2011-13) has signed a contract for the rest of this season with the Ravensburg Towerstars (Germany, DEL2). This season, he had 23 goals and 14 assists in 34 games with the Colorado Eagles (ECHL). He also was pointless in five games with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL). . . .
F Aaron Gagnon (Seattle, 2001-07) has signed for the rest of this season with Bern (Switzerland, NL A). This season, with Lukko Rauma (Finland, Liiga), he had 11 goals and 15 assists in 43 games. Lukko is in last place in Liiga and Gagnon’s release was mutually agreed upon.

The Regina Pats’ presentation to the 2018 Memorial Cup site selection committee on Wednesday in
Toronto included a proposal for an outdoor game at Mosaic Stadium, which is to open in time for the 2017 CFL season. . . . The Pats had promised a few “wow” moments in their proposal and that was one of them. . . . “If you want to use the military analogy, it was like a machine gun burst,” Gord Kirke, the CHL’s legal counsel and chairman of that selection committee, told Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post. “It wasn’t just the outdoor game. It was other things that they suggested as well. It was sort of boom, boom, boom. (The outdoor game) was an important factor but there were a few important factors.” . . . The OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and Oshawa Generals also made their presentations in the hopes of being selected to play host to what will be the Memorial Cup’s 100th anniversary event. . . . It’s expected that a winner will be revealed in February, perhaps during a Hockey Night in Canada telecast. . . . Harder’s story is right here.
——
The Prince George Cougars have signed F Zach Bolton, who turned 16 on Jan. 15, to a WHL contract. Bolton, from North Vancouver, was a seventh-round pick in the 2016 WHL bantam draft. This season, the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has five goals and nine assists in 22 games with the Vancouver-Northwest Giants of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. . . . Last season, he had 34 goals and 23 assists in 46 games with the North Shore Winter Club’s bantam AAA side. . . . The Cougars now have signed six of their first seven selections from the 2016 bantam draft -- forwards Keegan Craik, Edge Lambert and Bolton, defencemen Cole Beamin and Jack Michell, and G Taylor Gauthier. . . . The exception is F Jesse Mistelbacher, a sixth-round pick from Iles Des Chenes, Man.
——
AHLIf there any doubt about the role the 17-team USHL wants to play in junior hockey’s picture, it ended with a few announcements earlier this week, all of them aimed at improving the calibre of play. . . . At meetings last week, the USHL board of governors decided to allow its teams to add two Canadian-born players to their 23-man rosters without having those players count as imports. At present, each team is allowed four imports; they will be able to carry six as long as the two additions are Canadians. . . . That rule will come into play next season. . . . Starting in 2018-19, an import goaltender (defined as any non-USA Hockey goaltender) will count as two imports, with a team not allowed to have more than one import goaltender on its active roster. . . . At the same time, a 20-year-old goaltender won’t count towards the USHL’s roster maximum of four 20-year-old players.

JUST NOTES:

From the department of bizarre scheduling, the Victoria Royals (26-19-4) and Vancouver Giants (17-27-4) will meet three times in less than 48 hours this weekend. They play Friday night in Langley then Saturday and Sunday in Victoria. . . . Vancouver is 1-2-0 in the season series; Victoria is 2-0-1. . . .
From the department of bizarre scheduling, Part 2: The Royals and Giants will do it all over again on Feb. 24, 25 and 26. That series also will open in Langley and finish with a doubleheader in Victoria. . . .
F Reese Johnson is back on the ice with the Red Deer Rebels this week for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in October. He’s wearing a yellow non-contact jersey, but he’s out there. . . . Johnson, 18, had three goals and three assists in 36 games last season. . . .
General Electric will pay the NBA’s Boston Celtics US$7 million a year to have logos on their uniform tops. Did no one tell General Electric it could have had logos on all WHL team sweaters for less than that? . . .
The Colorado Avalanche is the latest NHL team to do away with morning skates on game days. The morning skate became a topic of conversation earlier this season when head coach John Tortorella of the Columbus Blue Jackets chose to ban them. Later, GM Jim Rutherford of the Pittsburgh Penguins called the pointless. . . . Some teams have decided that it’s more important for players to get rest than it is to go for a morning skate on the day of a game. . . . In the WHL, Kevin Constantine, the head coach of the Everett Silvertips, has said that “we’re a better team when we don’t skate in the morning and we save the energy for the game at night.”

Hrbas changing teams . . . Three Hells Angels convicted in beating death of former WHLer

F Jesse Mychan (Everett, Tri-City, 2011-13) has signed a one-year contract with the Cardiff Devils (Wales, UK Elite). Last season, with the Colorado Eagles (ECHL), he had 18 points, including 11 goals, in 55 games. He was pointless in three games while on loan to the Portland Pirates. . . .
G Tyler Weiman (Tri-City, 2000-04) has signed a one-year contract with Landshut (Germany, DEL2). Last season, with the Nuremburg Ice Tigers (Germany, DEL), he was 2.79 and .913 in 37 games.
---
Marek Hrbas is changing teams.
Hrbas, who played defence with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Kamloops Blazers (2010-13), is preparing for his second season with Sparta Praha of the Czech Extraliga.
No, he’s not changing hockey teams; this is about basketball.
On Friday, having just returned to Prague following a vacation in Turkey, Hrbas learned that NBA star LeBron James had left the Miami Heat in order to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
No one who isn’t family has been a bigger fan of LeBron and the Heat than the 21-year-old Hrbas. Sheesh, his Facebook page is headed up by a banner photo of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron celebrating a playoff victory. There also are a number of Heat-related photos on Hrbas’ Facebook page. I can tell you from experience that he loves to talk basketball.
All the Heat stuff, however, became history with LeBron’s announcement, at least to Hrbas.
“I think it's great,” the seemingly always-smiling Hrbas told me in a Facebook exchange. “He deserves respect for that and, of course, I will be a Cleveland fan now.”
When it was suggested that LeBron’s move will cost Hrbas some money, he replied: “I know! Haha gotta buy new bobblehead, jersey, hats, everything.”

1. Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post has written a really good piece on F Miles Koules of the Medicine Hat Tigers, who has been in the Washington Capitals’ development camp. That story is right here. You have to love a story that begins with: “The son of Hollywood and hockey. . . .”

2. The Prince George Cougars have scheduled a “major” news conference for Tuesday, 10 a.m., outside their CN Centre dressing room. . . . Perhaps they will announce the signing of a general manager to replace Dallas Thompson, who wasn’t renewed following the ownership change. Since then, Todd Harkins, the director of player personnel, has been the interim GM. The betting is that the word ‘interim’ will disappear from Harkins’ job description.

3. D Tanner Mort’s WHL career came crashing to an end on Oct. 12, 2012. Mort, then a defenceman with the Spokane Chiefs, suffered a concussion/neck injury during a game in Kamloops. . . . On Friday night, as Bruce Bourquin of the Coeur d’Alene Press reports right here, Mort got to play on the same ice surface as the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull and assorted others. . . . Bourquin also writes of Mort’s struggles with the reality that his injury had ended his dream of playing professionally. . . . Stick tap to SpokaneChiefsFanPage (@gochiefsgoblog) for this one.

4. The Detroit Red Wings have been searching for an assistant coach, having lost former Spokane Chiefs head coach Bill Peters to the Carolina Hurricanes, where he now is head coach. . . . Now comes word that former Kamloops Blazers head coach Tom Renney, another assistant under head coach Mike Babcock, may be the next president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada. . . . Ansar Khan of mlive.com has that story right here.

5. So . . . do major junior hockey players really need a union? Sunaya Sapurji of Yahoo! Canada Sports tries to answer that question right here. . . . Read this piece, and read between the lines, and you get the feeling that this latest attempt to organize these players is doomed to failure, just like the last one.

6. “Applause and cheers broke out in B.C. Supreme Court Friday when three Hells Angels associates were convicted of manslaughter in the vicious fatal beating of a Kelowna dad,” writes Kim Bolan of the Vancouver Sun. “Justice Mark McEwan found brothers Matthew and Daniel McRae, as well as their pal Anson Schell, guilty for their roles in the brutal attack that left Dain Phillips dead in June 2011.” . . . Phillips played 82 regular-season and 21 playoff games in the WHL (1978-80), splitting them between the Lethbridge Broncos and Medicine Hat Tigers. . . . Bolan’s complete story is right here.

7. Yes, LeBron James announced Friday morning that he’s going home to Cleveland and the Cavaliers. The best piece I’ve seen on the situation was written by Bill Simmons at Grantland and it’s right here.

8. Sports Illustrated scooped the world with the LeBron James story on Friday morning. But, Richard Sandomir of The New York Times, wonders right here if it really was journalism or was it the James Gang doing public relations? This really is food for thought. (Read this and you also will find out just how that letter/essay that was purportedly written by James really came to be.)

9. More than 40 years ago, a young sports writer from the Brandon Sun would spend the odd early morning at CKX radio chatting up an all-night DJ, who was an aspiring sportscaster. . . . Bob Irving now is into his 40th year of calling the play of Winnipeg Blue Bombers games. It’s not unreasonable to call him the Vin Scully of Canadian football play-callers. Yes, Irving is that good. . . . “My philosophy is simple, you describe what you see,” he told Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, who profiles Irving right here. “If it reflects badly on the home team, that’s too bad. You describe what you see. When the Bombers are getting beat 42-3, I’ve said on the air, more than once, this is getting hard to watch.” . . . Interestingly, when I was at the Brandon Sun in 1972, I worked alongside Bruce Penton, who covered the Wheat Kings at the time; he and Irving are close friends. Today, Penton’s son, Kirk, covers the Blue Bombers for the Winnipeg Sun.
---
THE COACHING GAME:
Jody Hull, the head coach of the OHL’s Peterborough Petes, has been named head coach of Canada’s U-18 team that will play at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament next month. . . . Hull takes over from Derek Laxdal, the former Edmonton Oil Kings head coach who left to join the AHL’s Texas Stars as head coach. . . . Hockey Canada also added Martin Raymond, the head coach of the QMJHL’s Drummondville Voltigeurs, as an assistant coach. . . . The other assistant coach is Eric Veilleux, the head coach of the QMJHL’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar. . . . Team Canada’s selection camp is scheduled for Calgary, Aug. 2-5, with the tournament running Aug. 11-16 in Piestany, Slovakia, and Breclav, Czech Republic.
---
Jarrod Skalde is the new head coach of the Norfolk Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. Skalde and Trent Yawney shared the position last season, but the latter has moved up and now is an assistant coach with the Ducks. . . . Skalde was a head coach for five seasons in the ECHL, winning the coach-of-the-year award in 2012-13 in his third season with the Cincinnati Cyclones. Skalde, 43, is from Niagara Falls, Ont. . . . Marty Wilford has been retained for a fourth season as an assistant coach.
---
The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Peter Horachek and Steve Spott to their coaching staff as assistants alongside head coach Randy Carlyle. . . . Horachek was the head coach of the Florida Panthers, while Spott was head coach of the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate. The Marlies now are in the market for a head coach.

The WHL must have felt some chest pains after seeing the headline — Why the WHL would work in Winnipeg; multiple franchises in trouble — on a Kelly Friesen-penned piece at Yahoo! Sports on Friday morning.
If you haven’t seen that piece, it’s right here.
NHLFriesen’s story doesn’t break much new ground, as it speculates that major junior hockey could work in the Manitoba capital with the city’s NHL franchise as the owner. That, of course, would be a business plan similar to Calgary and Edmonton where the Flames and Oilers control WHL franchises.Interestingly, Winnipeg has a rather dismal history of supporting junior hockey, from the junior A Manitoba Junior League, which now has just one team in the city, to the WHL. Last summer, the MJHL’s Winnipeg Saints were sold and relocated to Virden, where the franchise now operates as the Oil Capitals.
Winnipeg, at one time or another, was home to the WHL’s Jr. Jets (1967-73), Clubs (1973-76), Monarchs (1976-77) and Warriors (1980-84). The Jr. Jets, under the ownership of the legendary Ben Hatskin, had some near-glory days, but those were a long, long time ago.
Jim Toth of Winnipeg radio station CJOB, who has connections in the Kootenays from having spent some time working in the area, broke the news last weekend that True North Sports & Entertainment, which owns the NHL’s Jets, had been in WHL team logotalks with a WHL franchise about a possible sale and relocation.
Friesen, in his story, writes: “Multiple sources believe True North Sports and Entertainment recently kicked tires at the Kootenay Ice. The two sides apparently didn’t go far in negotiations with Ice owner Jeff Chynoweth asking for a much higher price than the Jets' ownership group is willing to pay.”
Would Chynoweth sell the Ice? Well, I would suggest that the Ice isn’t for sale but, as they say in the business world, everything has its price.
Furthermore, Jeff Hollick, the radio voice of the Ice, has reported on his blog that the Ice’s attendance “has dropped almost 450 per game this season over last.” According to Hollick, that leaves the Ice’s average attendance at 2,350.
The Ice, of course, signed a 15-year lease with the facility in Cranbrook in January 2009.
When I contacted Chynoweth on Thursday night via text about his having spoken with TNSE, he replied: “No truth. 100% we will be in Cranbrook next (season).”
Friesen also points to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Prince George Cougars and Swift Current Broncos as franchises that are struggling financially.
Lethbridge and Swift Current both are community-owned, meaning that the franchises are controlled by shareholders within their cities. Neither of those is likely to be sold, unless there is an accompanying guarantee that the franchise won’t be relocated. The people in those communities recognize that once the team is gone, it’s gone.
As for the Cougars, owner Rick Brodsky has indicated time and time again that he has no intentions of selling his franchise.
Were I in the market for a WHL franchise, and you can bet that TNSE is at least exploring its options, I would be placing a call to Bill Gallacher, the owner of the Portland Winterhawks.
There has been ample speculation that Gallacher is quite interested in purchasing the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes and relocating that franchise to Portland.
If TNSE hasn’t already done it, perhaps a call would be in order to ask Gallacher: If you do end up owning an NHL franchise, would you be interested in selling your WHL franchise?
———
F Frederik Tiffels, a German who was the Moose Jaw Warriors’ first selection in the CHL’s 2012 import draft, has committed to the NCAA route, saying he will join the Western Michigan University Broncos, who play out of Kalamazoo. . . . The Broncos head coach is former NHL head coach Andy Murray, who also speaks German. . . . Tiffels, who is from Cologne, has been playing in the USHL with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Tiffels, 17, has 20 points, including 18 assists, in 36 games. He also played for Germany at the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.
———
Former WHL G Kurtis Mucha earned the shutout as the Alberta Golden Bears opened a best-of-three Canada West playoff series with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Calgary Dinos. . . . Mucha is riding a shutout streak of 204 minutes 20 seconds. . . . The teams play again tonight in Edmonton.
———
ECHL
The visiting Evansville IceMen scored a 5-4 ECHL victory over the Florida Everblades last night. The game went to the circus and it went 21 rounds. That’s right. A 21-round circus. . . . There were 42 shooters and five goals. Hey, Dan Russell, we can only imagine how exciting that must have been!

FRIDAY’S GAMES:
A reminder: If you’re on Twitter and a hockey fan, you should be following WHL Facts at @WHLFacts . . .

In Saskatoon, the Blades set a franchise record as they won their 14th straight game, beating the Brandon Wheat Kings, 7-4. . . . The previous record of 13 had been held by the 1987-88 Blades. . . .  Saskatoon is atop the East Division, five points ahead of the Prince Albert Raiders with each team having 11 games to play. . . . Saskatoon F Matej Stransky scored three times in the first period and later added an assist. He‘s got 36 goals. Former Wheat Kings F Brenden Walker, who now is the Blades’ captain, had a goal, his 24th, and two assists. . . . Saskatoon F Josh Nicholls scored his 40th goal, into an empty net. . . . Saskatoon D Darren Dietz scored twice. He leads all WHL defencemen in goals (19). . . . Moose Jaw D Dallas Valentine is out indefinitely with what Matthew Gourlie of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald reports is a “fracture to part of the growth place in his hip.” . . . Gourlie also reported that D Spencer Morse, whom the Warriors had sent home for disciplinary reasons two weeks ago, has returned. He didn’t play last night. . . . The Warriors are 10th in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the Pats, but nine points out of the last playoff spot. . . .

In Calgary, F Brooks Macek scored the only goal in the circus and that gave the Hitmen a 6-5 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . The Hitmen won their 40th game of the season and clinched a playoff spot on head coach Mike Williamson’s 40th birthday. . . . Calgary F Brady Brassart didn’t take long running his goal streak to five games – he scored his 26th goal 10 seconds into the game. . . . F Leon Draisaitl of the Raiders scored twice, giving him 18. . . . Calgary D Jayden Rissling forced OT with his fifth goal at 17:39 of the third. . . . They are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference with the hard-charging Red Deer Rebels. . . .

In Lethbridge, G Patrik Bartosak turned aside 32 shots as the Red Deer Rebels beat the Hurricanes, 2-0. . . . Bartosak has three shutouts this season and four in his career. . . . Portland G Brendan Burke stopped 24 shots in earning his 20th victory. . . . Both Portland goaltenders now have won at least 20 games. . . . Prince George F Zach Pochiro was unsuccessful on a third-period penalty shot. . . . The Winter hawks (50-9-3) are the first CHL team to 50 victories. . . . Portland D Troy Rutkowski scored his 19th goal, moving him into a tie with Saskatoon’s Darren Dietz for most goals by a defenceman. Dietz had gotten to 19 earlier in the evening. . . . The Winterhawks also set a franchise record with their 25th road victory of the season. . . . The Cougars remain three points out of the Western Conference’s final playoff spot, which is held by the Everett Silvertips. . . .

Edmonton then went on the PP at 17:36 but gave up a shorthanded goal to F Liam Stewart at 18:35. . . . Stewart has 11 goals. . . . The Chiefs were 3-for-5 on the PP and scored twice while shorthanded. . . . The Chiefs are fifth in the Western Conference, one point behind the Tri-City Americans. . . . The Oil Kings are second in the overall standings, but now are 12 points behind Portland. . . .

Feser, who was playing in his 339th career game, has 37 goals; Mychan has 15. . . . Everett has lost a franchise-record 11 straight games. . . . Tri-City G Troy Trombley won his fourth game in his fourth straight start. Trombley, who was a late cut by the Silvertips in training camp, stopped 23 shots. . . . “As far as it goes, this is the highlight of my career,” Trombley told Annie Fowler of the Tri-City Herald. “I haven’t had an opportunity like this (in) forever. I can show everyone what I can do, especially Everett — they didn’t want me.” . . . The Americans were 3-for-5 on the PP. . . . Tri-City F Malte Stromwall had three assists. . . . Everett D Austin Adam, back in the lineup after missing 14 games as he battled a concussion and mononucleosis, scored his first goal and had an assist. . . . The Americans have won four in a row. . . . Tri-City F Tyson Dallman (left leg) departed 11 seconds into the game and didn’t return. . . . The Americans are fourth in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the Spokane Chiefs. . . . The two arch-rivals may indeed be headed for a first-round clash. . . .

In Victoria, the Kelowna Rockets scored five times in the second period and went on to an 8-3 victory over the Royals. . . . F Myles Bell had two goals, giving him 34, and two assists for Kelowna. . . . The teams were tied 1-1 going into the second period. . . . The Royals took 100 of the 174 penalty minutes handed out by referees Jeff Ingram and Brett Iverson. . . . The Rockets were 3-for-7 on the PP. . . . F Jamie Crooks scored his 30th goal for the Royals, who have lost five straight. . . . The Royals are sixth in the Western Conference, three points behind Spokane. . . . Kelowna leads the B.C. Division by three points over the Kamloops Blazers and has closed to within a point of Edmonton, which is second in the overall standings. . . .

In Vancouver, G Cole Cheveldave stopped 24 shots as the Kamloops Blazers beat the Giants, 6-0. . . . Cheveldave has four shutouts this season and eight in his career. . . . Kamloops F Brendan Ranford opened the scoring 10 seconds into the game. . . . F Colin Smith scored his 38th goal and added an assist, while F Cole Ully got his 20th goal. . . . The Red Deer Rebels will wear sweaters similar to this one
when they honour the Red Deer Rustlers on Feb. 23.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
Russia-VHLD Roman Teslyuk (Kamloops, Tri-City, 2003-07) was added to the roster of Buran Voronezh (Russia, Russia Vysshaya Liga) from Arlan Kokshetau (Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan Vysshaya Liga). He had five goals and three assists in 17 games with Arlan this season. . . .

EIHL-UKF Jordan Krestanovich (Calgary, 1997-2001) was replaced as head coach of the Braehead Clan (Scotland, UK Elite) by former NHL player and assistant coach Paul Gardner. Krestanovich has informed the club that he wishes to leave within the next two weeks; he was player-head coach. He has 11 goals and 22 assists in 36 games and had a 14-18-5-0 record as head coach this season. . . .

F Mark Santorelli (Chilliwack, 2006-08) signed a contract with Västerås (Sweden, Allsvenskan) after his release by Tingsryd (Sweden, Allsvenskan). He had four goals and nine assists in 34 games with Tingsryd this season, where he was team captain. In Västerås, Santorelli is reunited with his coach from last season in Tingsryd, Joakim Fagervall, who said: "He is a skilled player who will improve our offensive game. The Red Deer Rebels will salute the Red Deer Rustlers on Feb. 23.
With the Prince Albert Raiders in town, the Rebels will play host to Red Deer Rustlers Heritage Night.
The Rebels will wear replica jerseys of those worn by the 1979-80 Rustlers, who won the Centennial Cup as national junior A champions. (Junior A teams now play for the RBC Cup.)
The jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Central Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.
The Rustlers played in the AJHL from 1967-1989, although the franchise took a year’s leave of absence in 1985-86.  The Rustlers won the AJHL championship eight times and the Centennial Cup in 1971 and 1980.
Brent Sutter, the Rebels’ owner, general manager and head coach, played on the 1979-80 Rustlers.
All Rustlers alumni are asked to contact the Rebels at 403-341-6000 or info@reddeerrebels.com for information about attending that night.
