Price is right in Victoria ... Bodger on full-time with Royals ... Blazers sign first-round pick

———

G Riku Helenius (Seattle, 2007-08) has been released by Jokerit Helsinki (Finland, KHL). He had one year left on his contract. Last season, in 20 games, he was 2.66 and.902. . . .
F Michal Řepík (Vancouver, 2005-08) signed a one-year contract with Fribourg-Gottéron (Switzerland, NL A). Last season, with Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia, KHL), he was pointless in two games, and he had seven goals and nine assists in 22 games with Sparta Prague (Czech Republic, Extraliga).

The Victoria Royals introduced Dan Price as their new head coach on Monday.
Price, 42, takes over from Dave Lowry, who left after five seasons as head coach to join the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach.
The Royals also announced that Doug Bodger, a former NHL and WHL defenceman (Kamloops, 1982-84), has been hired a a full-time assistant coach. Bodger was a part-time assistant last season.
Price joined the Royals as an assistant coach on Sept. 1. From St. Albert, Sask., he had spent the

previous two seasons with the U of Toronto Varsity Blues, first as the assistant coach and then as assistant coach/manager of athletic recruitment.
In Victoria, Price replaced Enio Sacilotto, who moved from assistant coach of director of prospect development and WHL scout.
Before joining the Royals, Price had previous WHL experience as he had spent two seasons (2012-14) as an assistant coach with the Tri-City Americans and and three with the Chilliwack Bruins (2006-09). The Bruins, of course, morphed into the Royals over the summer of 2011. Price also scouted for the Regina Pats (2003-06).
Last season, Price spent three games as the Royals’ head coach, going 0-2-1 as Lowry sat out after being diagnosed with the mumps.
As a player, Price, a goaltender, spent three seasons at the U of Regina (1995-98). He moved on to the U of Saskatchewan, where he graduated in 2001 with a law degree.
The Royals’ announcement leaves the Calgary Hitmen as the only one of the WHL’s 22 teams without a head coach.
The Everett Silvertips have hired Dennis Williams to replace Kevin Constantine; the Kootenay Ice brought in James Patrick in place of Luke Pierce; the Spokane Chiefs signed Dan Lambert to take over from Don Nachbaur; and, of course, the Royals now have Price in place.
The Hitmen are looking for a replacement for Mark French, who has signed with a pro team in Switzerland after three seasons in Calgary.
——
The Victoria Royals also announced on Monday that Ryan Guenter has been promoted to head scout. He had been the senior regional scout for Alberta.
From Lethbridge, he has been part of Victoria’s organization since 2009-10.
Guenter is presently writing his thesis as he works to a masters in sport psychology with a focus on talent identification at the U of Alberta. He already has a bachelor of arts, psychology degree and business management, human resources degree from the U of Lethbridge.
The Royals also announced that they have extended their two senior regional scouts — Garry Pochipinski (East) and Ed Fowler (West).
——
The Kamloops Blazers have signed F Josh Pillar, their first-round selection in the WHL’s 2017 bantam draft. Pillar, from Warman, Sask., was taken with the 14th overall pick. Pillar played last season with the bantam AA Sask Valley Vipers, putting up 18 goals and 36 assists in 25 games. In 2017-18, he is expected to play for the midget AAA Prince Albert Mintos. Pillar spent last weekend in Kamloops at the Blazers’ prospects camp. . . . The Blazers haven’t yet signed F Massimo Rizzo, their first-round pick, also 14th overall, in the 2016 bantam draft. Management hopes to meet with Rizzo and his family later this month. Rizzo finished this season with the BCHL’s Penticton Vees.
——
Keith McCambridge, a former WHL defenceman, is the new head coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s New York Rangers. He replaces Ken Gernander, who was fired in May after 10 seasons as head coach. . . . McCambridge, 43, joined the Wolf Pack as an assistant coach on Aug. 3, 2016. He had spent the previous five seasons (2011-16) as the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets’ AHL affiliate, first the St. John’s IceCaps and then the Manitoba Moose. . . . From Thompson, Man., McCambridge played four seasons in the WHL (1991-95), three plus with the Swift Current Broncos and the last 21 games with the Kamloops Blazers. He helped the Blazers win the 1995 Memorial Cup.
——
F Alex Mowbray, who played out his junior eligibility last season with the Spokane Chiefs, will attend York U and play for the Lions next season. From Calgary, Mowbray played three seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers and one with the Chiefs. In 212 regular-season games, he had 49 points, including 26 goals.

New site great news for WHL fans . . . Beijing businessman buys BCHL franchise

The hockey community really is close-knit. Just ask me. Almost three years after my wife, Dorothy, underwent a kidney transplant, hockey people — scouts, fans, coaches, players, owners, general managers, player agents et all — regularly ask me about her.
A while ago, I had occasion to speak with Willie Desjardins, the head coach of the NHL’s Vancouver
Canucks. His first words? “How is your wife?”
On Wednesday, I received a text from Travis Green, the head coach of the AHL’s Utica Comets. He wondered how things were going.
Mark Holick, Mark Ferner, Cam Hope, Bruno Campese, Colin Priestner, Craig Demetrick, Glen Hanlon, Bob Tory, Dan De Palma, Dave Lowry, Vaughn Karpan, Bob Lowes and on and on . . .
Everyone asks about Dorothy, and I make certain that every single greeting gets passed along. Oh, if you could only see the smile every time I let her know that someone has asked about her.
Well, she is doing really well, well enough that she now is preparing to take part in her third straight Kidney Walk. The Kamloops walk is scheduled for Sept. 25.
If you would like to support her, as many of you have done in the past, please click right here and make a donation. All the money goes to the Kidney Foundation, an organization that has done so much for us and one that Dorothy is proud to support.
Over the previous two walks, you have helped Dorothy raise more than $5,000.

If you are a follower of the WHL, this one’s for you. . . . Paul Figler and the gang at WHL Stats have graduated to something bigger and better. They are calling it DubNetwork.ca. . . . Figler writes: “We’ve decided to bring in an editor and some writers so that you can get information that goes beyond what the league provides. There will be interviews, editorials, scouting reports and more.” . . . It is in its infancy, but it’s right here and here’s hoping that there are great things ahead.
——
Hockey Canada has added D Josh Brook of the Moose Jaw Warriors to the roster of the team that will play in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup that opens Monday in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Bratislava, Slovakia. . . . Brook, 17, is from Roblin, Man. He will replace D Jacob Paquette of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, who is injured. . . . Brook’s addition means the WHL has six players on Canada’s 22-man roster, the others being G Ian Scott (Prince Albert Raiders), D Jonathan Smart (Kelowna Rockets), F Jordy Bellerive (Lethbridge Hurricanes), F Stelio Mattheos (Brandon Wheat Kings) and F Michael Rasmussen (Tri-City Americans). . . . Canada, which has won this tournament each of the past eight years, is in Group B with Russia, Slovakia and Sweden. Canada will meet Czech Republic in a tuneup on Saturday. Canada begins tournament play on Monday against Slovakia.
——
F Carson Dimoff revealed via Twitter on Wednesday that he has committed to St. Lawrence U, where he will play for the Saints. . . . Dimoff, 17, is from Scottsdale, Ariz. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder played last season in Salzburg, Austria. He had 25 points, including 12 goals, with Salzburg’s U-18 team and four goals and an assist with a U-20 side. . . . Dimoff was a seventh-round selection by the Everett Silvertips in the 2014 bantam draft.
——
And now for something completely different. . . . Ray Zhang, a businessman who is from Beijing, has purchased the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals. . . . Here’s Zhang, from a news release: “This transaction is the first time someone from China has purchased an overseas hockey franchise. It will open the door for hockey families in China to learn about Canadian hockey firsthand. This link to Canadian hockey will prove valuable to encourage all of our young hockey players in China.” . . . According to Kent Rothbauer of the Cowichan Valley Citizen: “Zhang purchased the majority share of the team from former owner Cory Wanner, the Saskatchewan oilfield tradesman who bought into the club in 2013. Zhang's family plans to relocate to Duncan.” . . . Rothbauer’s story is right here.

Jay Leach, the associate coach last season, and video coach Sean Andrake have moved on to other organizations. . . . Last season, Forrest, 35, coached with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. He also has coached in the U.S. National Team Development Program. . . . Taylor, 44, spent the previous four seasons on the staff of the AHL’s Rochester Americans. . . . Nikkel has been working with the Boston College Eagles for the past four years.
——

He also worked four seasons as video co-ordinator with the NHL’s New York Islanders.

McCambridge, who is from Thompson, Man., played four seasons (1991-95) in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos and Thompson Blazers. He helped the Blazers win the 1995 Memorial Cup.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
F Sean Selmser (Moose Jaw, Red Deer, 1991-95) signed a one-year contract with Dornbirn (Austria, Nationalliga). He had 16 goals and 25 assists in 58 games for the Coventry Blaze (UK Elite) last season. . . .
D Mark Isherwood (Medicine Hat, 2005-10) signed a one-year contract with Cortina (Italy, Serie A). He had 15 goals and 20 assists in 70 games for the ECHL-champion Alaska Aces last season. Isherwood was also named to the ECHL All-Rookie team. . . .
D Vladimir Mihalik (Red Deer, Prince George, 2005-07) signed a one-year contract with Lev Poprad (Slovakia, KHL). He had one goal and eight assists in 66 games with the Norfolk Admirals (AHL) last season.

Peter Loubardias hasn’t had time to change the message on his voice mail, which indicates that he is employed by Rogers Sportsnet.
Unfortunately, that no longer is true.
Loubardias, who knows as much, if not more, about major junior hockey than anyone else in this country, lost his job Wednesday.
Loubardias, 43, told Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald that he is “devastated. Heartbroken. Hurt.”
Major junior hockey has no greater friend — or fan — than Loubardias, who was Sportsnet’s play-by-play voice at the Memorial Cup. He also called the play of Calgary Flames’ games for three seasons.
But you can bet that not getting to call games at the Memorial Cup has cut him to the bone.
"I have treasured the opportunity to cover eight Memorial Cups," he told Hall. "That's hard for me to even talk about. I have been so lucky to be involved with the national broadcast of that tournament.
"To think next year in Shawinigan that's going to be somebody else, that one really hurts. That one really stings."
Hall’s complete story is right here.
What is rather strange about the Loubardias story is that Bruce Dowbiggin, who keeps an eye on the sports media for The Globe and Media, wrote Wednesday that there is a “shortage of available sports TV talent.”
Scott Woodgate, Rogers’ vice-president of news and information, told Dowbiggin: “There are all these rumours of an implosion at Sportsnet. I don’t know where they’re coming from. We’re building our team at the moment. We haven’t got enough people to do all the things we want to do.”
You figure it out!
———
Back in the day, I spent a couple of WHL seasons working alongside Loubardias on broadcasts of Regina Pats’ games.
I don’t know what amazed me more — his photographic memory (I don’t know that he ever misidentified a player, and he knew every player on both teams) or his love for the game of junior hockey.
I would suggest that the number of hockey games he saw over the course of any one season rivalled the total witnessed by any NHL scout.
———
F Brendan Ranford of the Kamloops Blazers acknowledges that he fought weight and conditioning problems in the second half of last season. There’s more on his story right here.
The Blazers will open 2011-12 by playing four straight home games. Ranford will miss the first three of those as he completes a WHL-issued suspension. You may recall that he drew a six-game suspension after cross-checking linesman Kris Hartley in a late-season game.
———
F Max Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Reinhart had 79 points, including 34 goals, in 71 games with the WHL-champion Ice last season. He had 27 points, 15 of them goals, in 19 playoff games. He was Calgary’s first selection in the 2010 NHL draft — the Flames didn’t have a first- or second-round pick, and took him in the third round (64th overall). . . . He is one of three brothers expected to play in the WHL in 2011-12. . . . Griffin, a defenceman, is heading into his second season with the Edmonton Oil Kings. . . . Sam, a forward, will join Max with the Ice.
———
F Craig Cunningham, who played out his WHL eligibility last season, has signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Boston Bruins. They selected him in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL draft. He played more than four seasons with the Vancouver Giants before he was traded to the Portland Winterhawks in December. . . . Cunningham finished his WHL career with 264 points in 330 regular-season games. Over his last four seasons, he played in 67, 72, 72 and 71 games.
———
D Josh Hanson of the Portland Winterhawks is the lone WHL player (and one of three CHLers) to have been selected to play for the U.S. U-18 team at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia, from Aug. 8-13. . . . He had three points in 43 games with Portland last season. . . . Canada’s selection camp runs July 30 through Aug. 2.
———
THE COACHING GAME:
The yet-to-be nicknamed AHL team in St. John’s, Nfld., has named Keith McCambridge (Swift Current, Kamloops, 1991-95) as its head coach. McCambridge was an assistant coach with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose for the last two seasons. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as head coach of the ECHL’s Anchorage Aces. . . . With the relocation of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, the Moose has moved to St. John’s, Nfld. The Moose will be the AHL affiliate to the Jets.

More coaching news . . .

THE MacBETH REPORT:
F Jaroslav Kristek (Tri-City, 1998-2000) signed a one year contract with Lev Poprad (Slovakia, KHL). He had 14 goals and 32 assists in 55 games for Kosice (Slovakia, Extraliga) last season.
———
CAMP NOTES: F Jessey Astles of the Kelowna Rockets will attend the Pittsburgh Penguins’ development camp this month and also will be in their rookie camp in Oshawa, Ont., in September. Astles, 18, had six points and 129 penalty minutes in 59 games as a sophomore last season. . . . F Thomas Frazee, who finished up his WHL career with the Kamloops Blazers, will attend the Washington Capitals’ development camp later this month, as will F Taylor Stefishen of the Prince George Cougars. Stefishen also completed his junior eligibility last season. . . . Frazee had 72 points in 70 games as he split the season between the Regina Pats (33 games, 37 points) and Kamloops (37 games, 35 points). . . . Stefishen was a fifth-round selection of the Nashville Predators in the NHL’s 2008 draft but never signed. He left Ohio State to join the Cougars prior to last season and put up 67 points, including 24 goals, in 68 games. . . . F Dylan Willick of the Blazers had 24 goals last season, not 21 as was referenced here yesterday. He will attend the Minnesota Wild’s development camp.
———
THE COACHING GAME: Steve Spott, the GM/head coach of the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, has signed an extension that carries him through the 2017-18 season. Spott, 43, has been with the Rangers since 2002-03 when he came on board as assistant GM/associate coach. He has been GM/head coach since the summer of 2008. The Rangers are 106-77-21 in three seasons with Spott at the helm. . . . Brian Munz of CJOB Radio in Winnipeg reported Monday afternoon that Keith McCambridge (Swift Current, Kamloops, 1991-95) is expected to be named as the next head coach of the AHL team in St. John’s, Nfld., which doesn’t yet have a nickname. It is the relocated Manitoba Moose franchise and is affiliated with the Winnipeg Jets. McCambridge has been an assistant with the Moose for the last two seasons after he spent two seasons as head coach of the ECHL’s Alaska Aces. . . . Tim Wharnsby of CBC Sports tweeted late Monday night that John Torchetti, an associate coach with the Atlanta Thrashers last season, is expected to be named the head coach of the AHL’s Houston Aeros. He would replace Mike Yeo, now the head coach of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild.
———
Former Spokane Chiefs F Mitch Wahl missed almost all of last season with a concussion. He’s back on skates now and in the Calgary Flames’ development camp. Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary has that story right here.
