The Regina Pats announced Friday that they have shut down four players for the remainder of the season. . . . F Dryden Hunt, D Tye Hand, D Luke Fenske and D Colby Williams all have been out with “upper-body injuries.” Each of the players is believed to be concussed, with Hunt and Williams both out with their second concussions of this season. . . . The Pats have gone over the 300-game mark for man-games lost to injury and illness.

The Everett Silvertips have signed head scout Bil La Forge through the 2014-15 season. La Forge is in his fifth season with Everett and his second as the organizations’s head scout. La Forge, 38, also has worked for the Tri-City Americans and Lethbridge Hurricanes. La Forge, who is from Edmonton, is the son of the late Bill La Forge, who was a well-known junior hockey coach and coached in the WHL with the Regina Pats, Kamloops Blazers and Tri-City Americans.

The victory was the 40th of the season for the Americans, the seventh straight season in which they have done that. That equals the WHL record that is shared by the Kamloops Blazers (1989-96) and Regina Pats (1979-86). . . . The Americans are the only franchise to accomplished it with all seven seasons coming since the institution of the bantam draft. . . . “It’s a pretty special night,” Tri-City GM Bob Tory told me, “considering all the injuries this season. I am very proud of my players and our program.” . . . D Andrew Ference (Portland, 1994-99) has left Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He had two goals and five assists in 21 games. Ference left to rejoin his family in Boston, but didn’t rule out rejoining Ceske Budejovice before the end of January should the NHL owners cancel the rest of the season.

The Regina Pats are hoping to have Chandler Stephenson, their top centre, back in the lineup for a game tonight against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post reports that Stephenson, who hasn’t played since suffering a skate cut to a foot on Oct. 19, was to practise on Wednesday, after which head coach Pat Conacher would ponder a decision. . . . Harder also reports that D Luke Fenske (wrist) and F Dyson Stevenson (virus) are day-to-day, with D Colton Jobke (hand) and F Dryden Hunt (concussion) “a ways away.”

Harder also reported that former Pats F Andrew Rieder, 20, underwent shoulder surgery on Dec. 19, thereby ending his junior career. After being released by the Pats as they worked to get down to three 20-year-olds, Rieder, who is from Regina, joined the OHL’s Peterborough Petes. He played five games there before his recurring shoulder problems brought it all to and end. . . . “Because I got it done (now), my junior career is over,” Rieder told Harder. “At first it was a really hard pill to swallow. Growing up in Regina and playing for the Pats and then moving away and playing in the O and all of a sudden it’s over. It’s definitely difficult but I’m grateful for the opportunity that both the Pats and Peterborough gave me.”

The Moose Jaw Warriors go into Regina tonight having lost three straight games, and they are missing a few players with D Morgan Rielly with Canada at the World Junior Championship and three others at the U17 World Hockey Challenge. . . . F Jordan Wyton (suspected concussion) is close to returning from a 14-game absence, while Matthew Gourlie of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald reports that the Warriors had five young faces on the ice yesterday – G Zach Sawchenko (midget AAA Notre Dame Hounds), D Royce Rossignol (major midget Valley West Hawks in B.C.), F Jayden Halbgewachs (midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians), F Darcy DeRoose (SJHL’s Estevan Bruins) and F Ethan Williams (midget AAA Winnipeg Hawks). . . . Halbgewachs, the fourth overall selection in the 2012 bantam draft, was acquired from the Kamloops Blazers in the Joel Edmundson swap earlier this month. Halbgewachs is from Emerald Park, a community just east of Regina, and he just might make his WHL debut in Regina tonight.

If you happened by the Vancouver Giants’ website on Wednesday evening, you may have come across a video feature on how Liam Liston planned on spending Boxing Day. There was, however, no mention of retirement.
However, late on Wednesday, Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province tweeted: that the Giants “say G Liam Liston, 19, has retired. Tyler Fuhr, 17, to carry load with Payton Lee, 16, away.”
Lee, who has been starting the bulk of the Giants’ games, is with Team Pacific at the U17 World Hockey Challenge in Quebec.
With Liston gone, the Giants had G Stefan Wornig, 15, at practice yesterday. Wornig, from White Rock, B.C., was a fifth-round selection by the Giants in the 2012 bantam draft.

“After discussions between the Weyburn Red Wings and Dwight McMillan, the Weyburn Red Wings regretfully accepted his decision to retire. The Weyburn Red Wings would like to thank Dwight for his many years of service and dedication to the Wings and wish him all the best in any future endeavours he may pursue. This will be effective immediately.”
Prior to this season, McMillan, 68, had said it would be his final season.
"It's going to be hard (to leave the job) because I still enjoy coaching and working with the kids and everything else," McMillan told Ian Hamilton of the Regina Leader-Post in September. "But when you're pushing 69, holy mackerel, there has to come a time when you've got to say you're quitting. Sooner or later, I'm going to have to quit and spend time with my wife (Diane). It has been 40 years doing this."
McMillan has been the Red Wings’ head coach since 1972, with the exception of two seasons in the late 1980s.
Under McMillan, the Red Wings won SJHL titles in 1984, '94, '95, '97, '98 and 2001. They won Canadian junior A titles in 1984 and 2005.
This season, the Red Wings are 9-19-2 and last in the six-team Sherwood Division.

The Brandon Wheat Kings had a familiar face skating with them on Wednesday. F Michael Ferland, 20, who has been with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, was on the ice in Brandon. He had 96 points, including 47 goals, with the Wheat Kings last season. However, he had gotten into only seven games with the Heat and three with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies this season. He was a fifth-round selection by the Calgary Flames in the NHL’s 2010 draft. . . . Should Ferland get clearance from the Flames to return to Brandon, the Wheat Kings would have 14 days in which to move one of the three 20-year-olds now on their roster, either F Nick Buonassisi, D Ryley Miller or D Tyler Yaworski.

D Micki DuPont (Kamloops, 1996-2000) signed a three-year contract extension with Kloten (Switzerland, NL A). The extension runs through the 2014-15 season. DuPont has four goals and a league-leading 31 assists in 36 games for Kloten this season, good for seventh in league scoring.

It appears that the Portland Winterhawks are adding F Alex Schoenborn, a 16-year-old from Minot., N.D., to their roster. Ryan Clark of the Fargo, N.D., Forum noted Friday night that Schoenborn had confirmed the move on his Facebook page. . . . The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Schoenborn, who turned 16 on Dec. 12, had 45 points in 27 games for Minot High School last season. . . . This season, he was pointless in three games with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars. He was the 12th overall selection in the USHL’s 2011 futures draft. . . . He is a list player with Portland. . . . Schoenborn also has played with the midget AAA Omaha Lancers this season, picking up 41 points and 118 penalty minutes in 26 games. In North American Prospects Hockeky League games, he has 11 points in six games.

Marlon Martens, the radio voice of the Victoria Royals, explains the Jesse Pauls situation on his blog.
After speaking with Pauls, Martens explained, “With a plate and nine screws in (a) leg after breaking both bones last (season) he’s been playing with ‘chronic pain’ as he put it, ‘and have decided to look after my health.’ ”
Pauls also told Martens: “It’s affected my game and haven’t been able to play up to my potential . . . it sucks knowing you’ve got more and can’t do it.”

G Tyler Bunz of the Medicine Hat Tigers is scheduled to appear in a St. Albert, Alta., court on March 5 after entering not guilty pleas to what the Medicine Hat News reports are “two drunk-driving related allegations.”
According to The News, Bunz, 19, was charged “after an incident in his hometown of St. Albert in May.”
Brad McEwen, the Tigers’ general manager, told The News that the team won’t comment on the situation.
The Edmonton Oilers selected Bunz with the 121st pick of the NHL’s 2010 draft.

The Vancouver Giants have dealt D Luke Fenske, 18, to the Regina Pats for a third-round pick in the 2013 bantam draft.
Fenske, from Penticton, has six assists and 40 penalty minutes in 31 games with the Giants this season. He played 30 games with them in 2009-10 and 55 last season. In 116 games, he has four goals and 17 assists. . . . He was selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2008 bantam draft. . . .
The Kootenay Ice has traded F Adam Rossignol, 18, to the Swift Current Broncos for D Tanner Muth, 18. . . . Rossignol, from Surrey, B.C., had 13 points in 39 games. He was a seventh-round pick by the Ice in the 2008 bantam draft. . . . Muth, from Calgary, had four points in 38 games with the Broncos. He was selected 36th overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 2008 bantam draft.

F Daniel Broussard of the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s has been suspended for eight games for an anti-doping rule violation. The CHL and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport made the announcement on Friday. According to a news release, “The violation resulted from a urine sample collected during in-competition doping control in November 2011 which revealed the presence of methylhexaneamine, a prohibited stimulant.”
In a news release, CHL president David Branch stated that Broussard, who turns 21 on on Monday, and the 67’s were “extremely co-operative throughout the process.”
“We are completely satisfied,” Branch continued, “that the player used a supplement which he had purchased over the counter at a local retail outlet and had no knowledge that it contained a prohibited substance.”
Methylhexaneamine is on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List which is recognized by the CHL.
I said it last season and I’ll say it again . . . this automatic eight-game suspension for a first-time offender is ridiculous. Once again, we have a player who in no way was trying to cheat, but he has been labelled a drug cheat, just like the first-timers who were suspended last season.
Because of the number of major junior players using supplements, if the positive test turns out to be from inadvertent use and that can be proved, then why not issue a warning, and hand out an eight-game suspension for a second positive test?
A player makes a mistake like this and gets a longer suspension than some headshots and stickwork carry. And that’s just not right.

They will play again tonight in P.G. . . . Cheveldave is 19-5-3. . . . Kamloops D Bronson Maschmeyer got the winner at 1:01 of the second period. F Colin Smith added his 20th at 13:16 of the third. . . . Prince George G Drew Owsley stopped 41 shots. . . . In Spokane, the Chiefs erased a 1-0 deficit with four straight goals and went on to beat the Moose Jaw Warriors, 5-2. . . . D Corbin Baldwin had a goal and an assist and was plus-4 for the Chiefs. . . . Spokane G Mac Engel stopped 24 shots, 11 fewer than Moose Jaw’s Spencer Tremblay. . . . In Victoria, D Myles Bell had two goals and an assist to help the Kelowna Rockets to a 5-2 victory over the Royals. . . . Bell has seven goals this season. . . . Kelowna G Adam Brown stopped 36 shots. . . . Bell broke a 2-2 tie at 1:04 of the third period. . . . The Royals hae lost eight in a row. . . . The teams play in Victoria again tonight.

The OHL has suspended Marty Williamson, the head coach of the Niagara IceDogs, for five games for actions during and after a Thursday night game. Not enough coaches get into it with the officials and then repeat it for public consumption. A five-game suspension would indicate that the OHL doesn't want its coaches going public.

Should the Regina Pats qualify for the playoffs, they won’t be playing first-round games in the Brandt Centre, which is their home arena. The Ford World men’s curling championship will be decided in Regina, April 2-10. With the necessary setup time needed for the curling event, it’s unlikely that the Pats would get into the building for first-round games. . . . Craig Hartsburg, the head coach of the Everett Silvertips, will coach his 500th major junior game tonight against the Cougars in Prince George. He also has coached the OHL’s Guelph Storm and Soo Greyhounds. . . . Hartsburg also has coached 491 NHL games. He will get to No. 1,000 combined when the Portland Winterhawks visit Everett on March 12. . . . The Tri-City Americans have recalled F Dylan Fluter, 16, from the midget AAA North Battlefords Stars. An eighth-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound Fluter has 30 points and 45 penalty minutes in 42 games with the Stars.

Nick Patterson of the Everett Herald reports that former Everett Silvertips F Zack Dailey "has filed a lawsuit against the team over his Western Hockey League college scholarship." . . . That story is right here.

F Zach Hamill had a terrific WHL career with the Everett Silvertips. But now he is in his third season as a professional -- he is in the Boston Bruins organization -- meaning he could be a restricted free agent after this season. He is with the AHL’s Providence Bruins and, with the NHL trade deadline arriving on Feb. 28, he is hearing his name in rumours. Check out this story from the Providence Journal.

Early in the first period of Montreal’s 4-1 loss to the Oilers in Edmonton on Thursday night, Canadiens D James Wisniewski was struck in the face by a shot taken by F Taylor Hall. Wisniewski left a lot of blood on the ice before exiting and being taken to hospital. This isn’t for the squeamish, but here’s a photo he had taken while he was at the hospital. . . . He was released from hospital later in the evening and was on the team’s flight to Calgary.
