Thunderbirds can win it all tonight ... Game 6 set for Regina ... Big signing day in P.A.

F Ned Lukacevic (Spokane, Swift Current, 2001-06) has signed a one-year contract with Jegesmedvék Miskolc (Hungary, MOL Liga). This season, he had six goals and four assists with Katowice (Poland, PHL), and a goal and an assist in eight games with the Quad City Mallards (ECHL). . . .
G Brett Jaeger (Medicine Hat, Vancouver, Saskatoon, 2000-04) has signed a one-year extension with Löwen Frankfurt (Germany, DEL2). This season, in 40 games with Frankfurt, he was 2.89 and.895. He was named the DEL2 player of the month for April and was honoured as the most valuable player of the DEL2 playoffs.

The Seattle Thunderbirds get their first opportunity to win the franchise’s first WHL championship when they meet the Pats in Regina tonight (Sunday).
The Thunderbirds have won the last two games of the WHL’s championship final for the Ed Chynoweth Cup — 6-1 on Wednesday and 7-4 on Friday, both victories coming in Kent, Wash.
That gave Seattle a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven final. Should the Pats win tonight, they’ll settle it in Game 7 in Regina on Monday night.
The winner advances to the Memorial Cup that is scheduled to run May 19-28 in Windsor, Ont. The other three teams in the tournament have been established with the OHL-champion Erie Otters and the QMJHL-champion Saint John Sea Dogs joining the host Spitfires.
Should Seattle win the WHL championship, the Memorial Cup tournament would feature two American teams for the third time in its history.
In 1998, the host Spokane Chiefs and WHL-champion Portland were in the tournament, with the Winterhawks winning it.
In 2007, the tournament was held in Vancouver and included the QMJHL-champion Lewiston Maineiacs and the OHL-champion Plymouth Whalers, from Maine and Michigan, respectively. The host Vancouver Giants won it all, beating the WHL-champion Medicine Hat Tigers in the final.
For what it’s worth, neither the Maineiacs nor the Whalers are with us today. The OHL folded the Maineiacs on May 31, 2011; the Whalers moved to Flint, Mich., after the 2014-15 season, and now are the Firebirds.

The Prince Albert Raiders held an all-access open house on Saturday and during the festivities took time to sign their first three selections from the 2017 WHL bantam draft — D Kaiden Guhle, F Cohner Saleski and F Ozzy Wiesblatt. . . . The brother of D Brendan Guhle, Kaiden had 17 goals and 23 assists in 30 games for OHA Edmonton in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. . . . Wiesblatt, from Calgary, was taken with the 25th pick. He recorded 38 goals and 35 assists in 32 games with the bantam AAA Calgary Bisons.

It isn’t much, but it’s a profit, and that’s important to the community-owned teams in the WHL. The Prince Albert Raiders held their annual meeting on Monday and reported a profit of $3,892 for the 2015-16 season. . . . The Raiders showed a profit despite that fact that their attendance dropped 62 fans per game from 2014-15, when the franchise reported a loss of $61,365. In 2015-16, the Raiders averaged 2,369 fans per game. . . . The Raiders definitely would appear to be headed in the right direction; after all, they reported a loss of more than $262,000 for the 2013-14 season.

The Brandon Wheat Kings, the WHL’s defending champions, announced Tuesday that they have signed Grant Armstrong as their general manager. He replaces Kelly McCrimmon, the franchise’s owner and governor, who is joining the NHL’s Las Vegas franchise as assistant general manager. McCrimmon had been the GM since 1989, when he took over from Bill Shinske. . . . Guy Flaming of The Pipeline Show was the first to suggest that Armstrong could be headed to the Wheat Kings. . . . “I think it’s time,” Armstrong told Taking Note. “Hopefully, we’ll provide Kelly with a team he’s going to be proud of.” . . . . Armstrong, 54, from North Vancouver, had been with the Victoria Royals for four seasons, the past two as assistant GM, player personnel. Before that, he was the director of player personnel for two seasons. . . . Prior to that, Armstrong spent four seasons as the Portland Winterhawks’ head scout. . . . He has been a familiar face in Lower Mainland hockey circles, having coached the junior B North Delta Devils, while serving as the North Vancouver Minor Hockey Association’s director of hockey operations. He also has been involved with the North Delta Minor Hockey Association as a coach and development co-ordinator. He was honoured with the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association’s Coaching Development Award in 2003. . . . The Wheat Kings also announced that Mick McCrimmon, 30, will be the team’s assistant GM. McCrimmon, Kelly’s son, has a law degree, and will assist in hockey and business operations.
——
The Kootenay Ice has signed Roman Vopat as an assistant coach. He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the Prince George Cougars. . . . Vopat played two seasons in the WHL, with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Prince Albert Raiders, before going on to a 16-year professional career that included 133 NHL games. A native of Litvinov, Czech Republic, Vopat and his family reside in Cranbrook. . . . With the Ice, he’ll join head coach Luke Pierce and fellow assistant Gordon Burnett behind the bench.
——
With WHL training camps about to open, or in some cases having already started, Alan Caldwell has come through again. His annual numbers-filled look at WHL teams and their prospects is right here.
——
Vaughn Karpan, a native of The Pas, Man., has joined the NHL’s Las Vegas franchise as its director of player personnel. He had been with the Montreal Canadiens since 2005, most recently as director of pro scouting. He also worked with the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes for 13 years, five as director of amateur scouting. . . . Karpan played for Canada’s national men’s team (1983-88), playing in two Olympic Winter Games. He captained the U of Manitoba Bisons while playing there and also played one season (1979-80) with the Brandon Wheat Kings. . . . Las Vegas also confirmed something that was reported here yesterday — former Prince Albert Raiders general manager Bruno Campese has been hired as an amateur scout.
——
Bruce Franklin, a longtime scout with the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, has moved to the Anaheim Ducks to fill the new position of director of player evaluation. Franklin spent 23 years with Chicago, the last six as chief amateur scout. . . . He cut his scouting teeth in the WHL, where he was part of two Memorial Cup champions. He was a scout with the 1984-85 Prince Albert Raiders and the director of player personnel with the 1988-89 Swift Current Broncos.
——
Scott Galbraith, a fan of the OHL’s London Knights, has filed a civil statement of claim asking for $100,000, including $80,000 for aggravated and punitive damages, after he says he purchased a game-used sweater but wasn’t given the one that he had bought. The suit also names the Canadian Hockey League and the Hockey Hall of Fame. . . . Robert Cribb of the Toronto Star has more right here.

Billy Keane is the new head coach of the MJHL’s Winnipeg Blues. McGillivray had been the GM/head coach of the Blues for seven seasons. . . . Keane had been an assistant coach with the Blues for three seasons. He played for them for two seasons (1982-84). . . . Tim Schick will be the Blues’ director of hockey operations and head scout, with Wayne Bartley on board as assistant coach. . . . Keane is the brother of former NHL/WHL F Mike Keane.

It appears that voters in Kennewick, Wash., have voted against the implementation of a sales tax that would have resulted in improvements to the Toyota Center, the home of the WHL’s Tri-City Americans. . . . As of Thursday night, there were about 2,000 ballots yet to count, with the no side holding a lead of 53 to 47 per cent. . . . According to the Tri-City Herald, “The Kennewick Public Facilities District asked voters to approve a two-tenths of a percent sales tax increase to fund a $35-million upgrade to the (Three Rivers Convention Center). It would have added 2 cents to a $10 purchase in the city.” . . . Wendy Culverwell of the Herald reported earlier in the week that a ‘yes’ vote would have allowed the replacing of “aging equipment, including the 28-year-old ice plant for the hockey arena and the old locker room. The project would have made Toyota Center more accessible to visitors with disabilities, as well by upgrading parking and entrances and increasing seating.” . . . The vote took place on Tuesday, with a voter turnout of 30 per cent. . . . Bob Tory, the Americans’ general manager, told Taking Note last night that he will withhold comment until everything is finalized on Aug. 16.

GOULBOURNE
The Kelowna Rockets will be without F Tyrell Goulbourne tonight when they meet the Winterhawks in Portland in Game 6 of the WHL’s Western Conference final. . . . Goulbourne, 21, underwent surgery after Game 5 on Friday night to repair damage to his left leg. He suffered a skate cut to his calf muscle in the second period after he initiated contact with Portland F Keegan Iverson. According to a tweet from the Rockets, their doctors “say it was successful surgery, he will make a full recovery. To be re-evaluated on week to week basis.” . . . The Rockets report that he is out indefinitely. . . . Goulbourne, who has signed with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, is the leader of Kelowna’s physical game. He had 45 points, 22 of them goals, in 62 regular-season games. In 12 playoff games, he has one goal and one assist.
——
The Kelowna Rockets lead the Western Conference final 3-2 going into tonight’s game against the Winterhawks in Portland. Oil Kings fighting a curse? Some WHL coaching rumours . . .

EIHL-UKF Ned Lukacevic (Spokane, Swift Current, 2001-06) has signed a one-year extension with the Fife Flyers (Scotland, UK Elite). Lukacevic started this season with Tohoku Free Blades Hachinohe (Japan, Asia HL), putting up seven points, two of them goals, in 10 games. . . . He signed with the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL) on Oct. 22 and was pointless in one game. He was claimed on waivers on Oct. 28 by the Reading Royals (ECHL) and scored twice in nine games. He signed with Fife on Dec. 14 and had 44 points, 15 of them goals in 34 games. . . . The Fife head coach is Todd Dutiaume (Brandon, 1991-94), who has been at Fife as a player, player-coach, or coach since 1998-99.
---

1. Ken Campbell of The Hockey News has seen enough of the present Memorial Cup tournament format that includes a sometimes undeserving host team. It’s time, he writes right here, for the Canadian Hockey League to come up with something different. . . . Campbell doesn’t seem to have a problem with the round-robin format, but I do. It just isn’t right to take teams that, for the most part, have just played and won four best-of-seven series and stick them into a championship that uses a round-robin format. Throw in a host team that perhaps didn’t get out of the first or second round of its league playoffs and you have a recipe for disaster. . . . Unfortunately, the host team format presents the CHL with a license to print money, so we never will see the major junior championship decided in a best-of-seven series. And that’s too bad. . . . (If you are wondering, I would have the champions of two leagues play off to see which one would meet the third league for the Memorial Cup. I would rotate the bye to the final each season.)

2. Bud Selig is to step down as the commissioner of Major League Baseball in January. Yes, there is a move afoot to find a successor. It appears that Selig knows who he wants to take over. But is there agreement among the owners? Michael S. Schmidt of The New York Times has an intriguing story right here.

3. F Jake Virtanen of the Calgary Hitmen has undergone shoulder surgery to repair damage suffered this season. Virtanen will be sidelined for up to six months. He will attend the NHL combine later this month but won’t be able to take part in any of the fitness tests. . . . Virtanen, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 bantam draft, had 71 points, 45 of them goals, in 71 games this season, his second in the WHL. He will turn 18 on Aug. 17.

4. The Royal Bank of Canada and the Toronto-Dominion Bank showed profits of more than $2 billion for the second straight quarter. . . . RBC was at $2.2 billion; while TD showed up at $2.1 billion. . . . Meanwhile, Canada Post lost $28 million in its first quarter. . . . Dear Canada Post: Perhaps you should go into the banking business.

5. G Dustin Tokarski is the flavour of the day, having backstopped the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 OT victory over the host New York Rangers on Thursday night. . . . If you aren’t aware, he was cut by six or seven midget AAA teams in Saskatchewan before the Prince Albert Mintos gave him a chance. Later, two WHL teams dropped him before he caught on with the Spokane Chiefs. . . . In fact, his mother, Darlene, emailed Mike Mazurak, the Mintos’ GM, to see if he needed a goaltender and the rest, including a national midget AAA championship, is history. As Mazurak told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix six years ago: “She sends me that email every year just to remind me.” . . . If you would like to read more about the legend of Dustin Tokarski, which includes Memorial Cup and World Junior titles, the StarPhoenix story, written by Darren Zary, is right here.

6. In 2008, G Dustin Tokarski was part of the Spokane Chiefs team that won the Memorial Cup, beating the host Kitchener Rangers 4-1 in the final. . . . You may recall that it was following that game when the Memorial Cup, as it was being cuddled by Chiefs captain Chris Bruton, broke into two pieces. . . . The WHL hasn’t held the Memorial Cup since that incident. . . . Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun, who wonders if the Oil Kings aren’t up against a curse at this Memorial Cup in London, Ont., has more right here.

THE COACHING GAME:
Suddenly, there are more names mentioned for the Vancouver Giants’ head-coaching vacancy than minority owner Michael Buble has songs in his repertoire. . . . News 1130 Sports tweeted early Thursday that Perry Pearn is “very high” on the list. “Coaching search not done,” the tweet read, “but Pearn emerging as leader.” . . . Earlier, News 1130 Sports had tweeted that Pearn, Marc Habscheid and Tim Hunter are “just some of the names who have applied” for the job. . . . Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province reports that the Giants “apparently” talked with former Portland Winterhawks head coach Travis Green, who is the head coach of the Utica Comets, the Vancouver Canucks’ AHL affiliate. According to Ewen, Green “told them that he wants to stay in the pro ranks.” . . . Ewen also reports that former Saskatoon Blades F Jason Christie, now the head coach with the ECHL’s Ontario Reign, “is said to be on the Giants’ radar,” as is Edmonton Oil Kings’ assistant coach Steve Hamilton. . . . I was told Thursday that the Saskatoon Blades, who are in need of a general manager and head coach, also are wanting to chat with Hamilton, who is kind of busy at the Memorial Cup these days. Hamilton is wrapping up his fourth season as an assistant with the Oil Kings. Of course, should Edmonton head coach Derek Laxdal move on after what has been another successful season, perhaps Hamilton would be in line for a promotion. When former GM Bob Green moved to the parent Edmonton Oilers, it was his assistant, Randy Hansch, who moved up, so there is at least some history in the organization of promoting from within.
---
Matt Hughes is the new general manager and head coach of the junior B Nelson Leafs of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Hughes, who was born in Fort St. John, B.C., and raised in Kamloops, was fired earlier this month after one season as general manager and head coach of the AJHL’s Grande Prairie Storm. He has previous head-coaching experience in the KIJHL with the Columbia Valley Rockies. . . . Larry Martel, the interim president of the society that operates the Leafs, told the Nelson Daily that “there were 28 very good candidates from all over North America who applied. We interviewed eight the committee felt were the very best.” . . . Hughes takes over from Frank Maida, who resigned in April.
---
OHLJay Wells has joined the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit as an assistant coach. Wells, a veteran of 18 seasons as an NHL defenceman, spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the OHL’s Barrie Colts. . . . Wells and Spirit head coach Greg Gilbert played together on the 1993-94 New York Rangers, who won the Stanley Cup. . . . The Spirit, which earlier added former NHLer Phil Myre as its goaltending coach, also announced that associate coach John Kisil is returning.
---
ECHLHead coach Brad Ralph and the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads have reached agreement on a two-year contract extension that will take him through 2016-17. The 33-year-old Ralph, who also is director of hockey operations, has been with Idaho for two seasons, reaching the playoffs in both. The Steelheads got into the second round this season, after losing out in the Western Conference final a year ago.
---
Luke Strand is the new general manager and head coach of the Madison Capitols, who are preparing for their first season in the USHL. . . . Strand spent this season as general manager of the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers. From 2009-11, he was Sioux City’s head coach. He also has coach in the AHL, as an assistant coach with the Houston Aeros (2007-09) and Abbotsford Heat (2011-13). . . . With the Capitols, he replaces Steve Miller, who resigned last weekend.
