Trust fund established to help Bozon family; Pats clinch East pennant

pose with a banner that was signed by fans at their last two home games.
Last night, fans donated $1,078 to the Tim Bozon Trust Fund.

The Kootenay Ice are wearing a decal on
their helmets as a show of support for
teammate Tim Bozon.

The WHL has announced details of a trust fund to assist Kootenay Ice F Tim Bozon and his family with medical and rehabilitation costs.
According to a WHL news release, folks are able to “make donations at any BMO Bank of Montreal branch in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba.” (Note to WHL: Just wondering, but is there a way for American or overseas fans to make donations via PayPal or electronically?)
Bozon, who was in his third WHL season, has been in Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon since March 1. He played, and a scored a goal, the previous night in Saskatoon. The following day, he diagnosed with Neisseria Meningitis, admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and placed in a medically induced coma as doctors worked to slow the advance of the meningitis.
Late this week, with his condition critical but stable, doctors began getting him out of the coma. His condition has been improving and his parents, Helene and Philippe, said Thursday that their son was responding to verbal stimuli.

Czech-ELH
F Petr Nedved (Seattle, 1989-90) signed a one-year contract extension with Liberec (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He had 20 goals and 33 assists in 48 games as captain of Liberec this season.

So it has come to this in the NHL.
All signs point to the Vancouver Canucks hiring John Tortorella as their new head coach. The New York Rangers have hired a smiling Alain Vigneault as their new head coach.
Tortorella was fired by the Rangers last month. Vigneault was fired by the Canucks last month.
Is this a case of two teams, each thinking it is smarter than the other?
This is absolutely bizarre, but it might make the next NHL season worth watching.
———
Iain MacIntyre, a sports columnist with the Vancouver Sun, was among the reporters who staked out the airport in Vancouver once word came via social media that John Tortorella had boarded a plane in Denver and was headed for the home of the Canucks. MacIntyre’s column is right here and it would seem that he, like so many others, is trying to figure out how the ex-Rangers coach might be a good fit for the Canucks.
———
Meanwhile, at the Vancouver Province, columnist Ed Willes was likening the expected hiring of John Tortorella to “the kind of knee-jerk decision that other organizations make, not the Canucks.” That piece is right here.
———
And how did it get to this point with John Tortorella? Right here is Dave Lozo on what it was like covering the New York Rangers for four years under John Tortorella.
———
F Carter Rigby of the Kelowna Rockets, limited by injuries to just 34 regular-season games this season, has had both shoulders operated on already this offseason. According to AM1150, the radio voice of the Rockets, Rigby, 19, had surgery on his right shoulder last month and was to have surgery on his left shoulder on Wednesday in London, Ont.
———
THE COACHING GAME:
BCHLKris Mallette has signed on with the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers as their associate coach. He will work alongside general manager/head coach Jason Williamson. Mallette (Kelowna, Moose Jaw, 1996-2000) had been the head coach of the junior B North Okanagan Knights of the Kootenay International Junior League. The Knights went 69-30-2-3 in two seasons under Mallette. . . . The Vipers, whose staff also includes assistant coach Dave Robinson, will be the host team for the 2014 RBC Cup.
ECHLThe ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors have hired Troy Mann as their head coach. Mann, 43, has been an assistant coach with the AHL’s Hershey Bears for the last four seasons. . . . Mann replaces Matt O’Dette with the Condors and is the first head-coaching hire by new general manager John Olver, who took over on April 11.

The QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders have extended the contract of head coach Gordie Dwyer for two seasons. He now is signed through 2015-16. . . . The Islanders are 60-66-0-10 in two seasons under Dwyer, who is a native of Dalhousie, N.B.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
F Petr Nedved (Seattle, 1989-90) signed a one-year contract extension with Liberec (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He led the Czech Extraliga in scoring and assists with 24 goals and 37 assists in 49 games and was named Extraliga Player of the Year last season. Nedved, who turns 41 in December, has been captain of Liberec the past four seasons and was an alternate captain on the Czech National Team at last year's world championship. He had three goals and two assists in nine games there, helping the Czechs win the bronze medal.
———
Bob Duff, a sports columnist with the Windsor Star, weights in right here on the OHL’s decision to whack the Windsor Spitfires for recruiting irregularities. . . . Duff, by the way, knows his way around the CHL. Back in the day, he was at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and his beat was the Saskatoon Blades.
———
Jim Parker of the Windsor Star talks right here with a former OHL general manager about the impact disciplinary action taken by the OHL will have on the Windsor Spitfires.
———
As he prepares for life in Antigonish, N.S., F Cole Grbavac, who completed his WHL eligibility with the Medicine Hat Tigers last season, has been named a recipient of a Danny Gallivan Memorial Scholarship. The announcement was made by StFX Athletics. Grbavac is on his way to StFX to study business and play for the X-Men. . . . Gallivan, the legendary voice of the Montreal Canadiens, graduated from StFX in 1942. . . . According to a StFX news release: “The Danny Gallivan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Canadian male and female varsity athletes who combine qualities of leadership with academic excellence. The award is currently valued up to $5,000 per year and is renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient remains on the academic Dean’s List.” . . . F Brennen Wray, who split five WHL seasons between the Moose Jaw Warriors and Red Deer Rebels, is preparing for his fourth season at StFX and was earlier awarded a Gallivan Scholarship.
———
Jimmy Watson of the Shreveport Times has an interesting piece here on the subject of concussions in sports. . . . “While the NFL has borne the brunt of the bad PR, maybe it’s not the exposure (in just that league),” Dr. Julian Bailes, chairman of neurosurgery at the NorthShore University HealthSystem in Chicago, is quoted as saying. “It might be the exposure in adolescence or youth. The brain between 14 and 17 begins to remodel. There is mounting evidence in humans that sub-concussion may be real.” . . . It also is interesting that concussion-related lawsuits have been filed against the NFL and the NCAA, and that there even are litigious examples involving high school sports.
