Nanaimo on one WHL schedule ... Blazers turn to business community ... Giants still hurting

F Jaroslav Vlach (Prince George, 2009-11) has signed a two-year contract extension with Liberec (Czech Republic, Extraliga). This season, he has two goals and five assists in 29 games with Liberec. He also had one assist in five games while on loan to Benátky nad Jizerou (Czech Republic, 1. Liga). . . .
F Robin Kovář (Vancouver, Regina, 2001-04) has signed for the rest of this season with the Swindon Wildcats (England, Premier). This season, he had 18 goals and 29 assists in 34 games with the Manchester Phoenix (England, Premier) before being released on Jan. 9 for financial reasons.
———
The WHL is in the process of preparing two schedules for the 2017-18 regular season, one that would include the Kootenay Ice and one that would have that franchise in Nanaimo.
Taking Note learned Thursday that the schedule that includes Nanaimo would feature two 11-team
conferences, whereas the Eastern Conference now has 12 teams and the Western Conference has 10.
Voters in Nanaimo are scheduled to go to the polls, likely on March 11, for a referendum. The question on the ballot will be:
“Are you in favour of the City of Nanaimo Council adopting Loan Authorization Bylaw 2017 No. 7237 which will authorize Council to borrow a sum not exceeding $80,000,000, repayable over a period of no more than 20 years, for the development and construction of an event centre that will include an ice arena and other related entertainment, cultural and recreation facilities?”
While preparations for that have been ongoing, the city also has been talking to the WHL about acquiring a franchise for the new facility, should it get the go-ahead from voters.
It seems obvious that Kootenay is the franchise in question as the Chynoweth family has had a ‘for sale’ sticker on it since 2011.
Should the ‘Yes’ side win the Nanaimo referendum, it is anticipated that a WHL team would play out of the Frank Crane Arena for at least two seasons while a new facility is being built. The Frank Crane Arena, which is the home of the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers, seats around 2,400.
What isn’t clear is who would own the Ice were the franchise to relocate. However, the WHL has been thirsting to get a team into Nanaimo, something that would allow teams to travel to Vancouver Island and make stops there and in Victoria. That alone should increase interest in the franchise.

As they try to find their place in the community, the Kamloops Blazers have announced via a news release the formation of a nine-person advisory board comprising eight men and one woman from the local business community.
The chairman is Norm Daley of the accounting firm Daley & Company. Also on the board are Garth Buchko of NL Broadcasting, the Blazers’ long-time broadcast rights holder; Monica Dickinson of Tourism Kamloops; Steve Earl of Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott; Rob James of RJames Western Star Freightliner; Yves Lacasse of KGHM-Ajax; Jim Lightbody of the B.C. Lottery Corporation; Byron McCorkell of the city’s parks, recreation and culture department; and Rob Zimmer of the Zimmer AutoGroup.
According to a news release, “The advisory board will work with the hockey club to build new business relationships, enhance the game night experience and expand the hockey club’s fan base.”
While the Blazers are in second place in the B.C. Division, with a 29-17-3 record, their attendance continues to sputter. In fact, it has done a lot of that since the franchise went from being community-owned to private ownership during the summer of 2007. Tom Gaglardi, who also owns the NHL’s Dallas Stars, owns 51 per cent of the Blazers, while former Kamloops players Shane Doan, Jarome Iginla, Mark Recchi and Darryl Sydor own the rest.
This season, through 26 home games, the Blazers are averaging an announced attendance of 3,626. Last season, their final average attendance was 3,769.
In 2007-08, the first season under this ownership group, the average was 4,562. That figure topped out at 4,825 for 2012-13.
Of the 30 smallest announced crowds in the history of the Blazers’ home arena — what now is the Sandman Centre opened for 1992-93 — 26 have occurred since Jan. 28, 2014.
The Stars, under Gaglardi’s ownership, have an ownership advisory board.
“The advice and guidance the Stars have received from business leaders in Dallas has been immeasurable,” Gaglardi said in the news release. “We think we can create a similar model in Kamloops.”

The Vancouver Giants remain without F Tyler Benson and D Darian Skeoch as they prepare for a weekend tripleheader with the Victoria Royals. Benson has missed 10 games with what originally was referred to as a minor injury, while Skeoch has sat out 18 straight with an ankle issue. . . . Vancouver D Matt Barberis remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury, but F Ty Ronning and F Tyler Popowich, both of whom have been bothered by the flu, are set to return. . . . The Giants and Royals will meet tonight (Friday) in Langley, B.C., before playing Saturday and Sunday in Victoria. . . . Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province has more right here.

The Regina Pats should have their top two goaltenders available at the same time tonight for the first time since Nov. 20. . . . Starter Tyler Brown has missed five games with an undisclosed injury. . . . Jordan Hollett missed 22 games after suffering a high ankle sprain. He returned for a 6-5 victory over the host Swift Current Broncos on Saturday, but was rested the following day. . . . The Pats are scheduled to play two games this weekend — in Calgary against the Hitmen tonight and in Red Deer against the Rebels on Saturday.
——
With F Brett Clayton having returned from an undisclosed injury, the Portland Winterhawks have dropped F Ty Westgard, 19, from their roster. Westgard, who was acquired from the Victoria Royals early in the season, is pointless in five games with the Winterhawks. From White Rock, B.C., he has nine points, three of them goals, in 22 games with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles. . . . Clayton, 18, has a goal and an assist in 19 games with the Winterhawks. Last season, he had a goal and two assists in 57 games. . . . Clayton returned to Portland’s lineup on Tuesday after not playing since Dec. 31.

Giants wheeling, dealing . . . Patrick back Friday? . . . Concussion ends Morrisseau's season

F Robin Kovář (Vancouver, Regina, 2001-04) has been released by the Manchester Phoenix (England, Premier) for financial reasons. He had 39 points, including 18 goals, in 32 games.

WHL trades since Dec. 27:
Trades: 25.
Players: 43.
Bantam draft picks: 33.
Conditional bantam draft picks: 6.
(WHL trade deadline is Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. MT, which is 4 p.m. in Brandon and 2 p.m. in Vancouver and Portland).
When last I left you, I had written that the Lethbridge Hurricanes, after a number of moves on Monday, had 21 players on their roster, including 12 forwards and seven defencemen. “Obviously, then,” I wrote, “Anholt isn’t finished.”
Shortly after I posted that, Peter Anholt, the Hurricanes’ general manager, acquired F Alec Baer, 19, from the Vancouver Giants for a third-round selection in the 2017 WHL bantam draft.
Baer, from St. Louis Park, Minn., is a list player who signed with the Giants on Feb. 15, 2013.
This season, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Baer has three goals and 15 assists in 39 games this season, his fourth with the Giants. In 240 career games, he has 44 goals and 61 assists.
Baer is expected to be in the Hurricanes’ lineup on Wednesday when they visit the Edmonton Oil Kings.
——
News 1130 Sports of Vancouver reported Monday night that the Giants “have traded forward Radovan Bondra” to the Prince George Cougars.
According to the radio station, the Giants will get a third-round bantam draft pick and “1-2 players” from the Cougars.
Bondra, 19, is from Trebisov, Slovakia. He is a 6-foot-5, 220-pounder with good offensive skills.
This season, Bondra has 19 goals and 12 assists in 32 games. Last season, as a freshman, had had 30 points, including 15 goals, in 58 games.
The Chicago Blackhawks selected Bondra in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL draft.
The addition of Bondra would the Cougars with three imports, the other two being Russian F Nikita Popugaev, who was acquired last week from the Moose Jaw Warriors, and Dutch F Bartek Bison, who hasn’t played since Dec. 3 due to a concussion.
Vancouver’s other import is Russian D Dmitry Osipov, 20.
——
If things go well at practice this week, F Nolan Patrick could be back in the Brandon Wheat Kings’ lineup on Friday against the visiting Kootenay Ice.
Patrick, who remains the consensus No. 1 pick for the NHL’s 2017 draft, has played only six games this season, none since Oct. 11. He underwent surgery for a sports hernia in July, missed most of training camp, played six games and hasn’t played since.
Kelly McCrimmon, the Wheat Kings’ owner who now is the assistant GM with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, told TSN’s Bob McKenzie that Patrick was to take part in a full practice on Monday. “He’ll practise full up this week and he aims to play Friday so long as the rest of the week goes well,” McCrimmon said.
Patrick had four goals and five assists in those six games.
——
You may be wondering how F Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings can be the favourite as the No. 1 selection in the NHL’s 2017 draft despite playing only six games this season. Well, Craig Button of TSN has released his latest rankings — Craig’s List features his top 105 — and he explains why Patrick remains No. 1. That’s all right here.
——
F Koby Morrisseau, 16, has been shut down for the rest of this season by the Spokane Chiefs. He has
KOBY MORRISSEAU
been played on the long-term injured reserve list.
“After further review and consideration with medical professionals and his family, we have decided to shut Koby down for the rest of the (season),” Spokane general manager Scott Carter said in a news release. “His health is our top priority. We wish him the best as he works toward a full recovery.”
Morrisseau, from Grandview, Man., was a first-round selection in the 2015 WHL bantam draft. This season, he had one goal and one assist in 22 games.
Morrisseau has suffered two concussions this season.
The first occurred Sept. 3 in an exhibition game against the Portland Winterhawks in Everett. Morrisseau spent that night in hospital after leaving the ice on a stretcher following a check from behind. Portland F Brett Clayton was suspended for six games as a result of the hit.
Morrisseau was back in time for the start of the regular season on Sept. 24.
He last played on Dec. 13 against the host Seattle Thunderbirds. He needed attention from both teams’ training staffs and left the game following a hard check from Seattle D Turner Ottenbreit.
——
D Luke Reid, a second-round selection by the Victoria Royals in the 2016 WHL bantam draft, has made a verbal commitment to attend North Dakota. Reid, 15, is from Warman, Sask. Reid plays for the Battlefords Stars of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

Concussion Report
A few years ago, a football player to a severe blow to the head while wearing a mouth guard with motion sensors. “The information from those sensors,” according to a piece in The New York Times, “has given researchers a more detailed and precise window into what was happening within the player’s brain in the milliseconds after the hit.” . . . That complete piece, including great video work, is right here. You really need to check this out in order to see just what happens to the brain after a shot to the head.

'Sudden-Death' Tambellini strikes again . . . 'Hawks romp past Rockets . . . Petan ties franchise mark

F Dustin Johner (Seattle, 1999-2004) has signed a one-year contract with Villach (Austria, Erste Bank Liga). This season, with Västerås (Sweden, Allsvenskan), he had 23 goals and 23 assists in 51 games. He led his team in goals, assists and points, and was fifth in the league’s scoring race. . . .
F Robin Kovář (Vancouver, Regina, 2001-04) has signed a one-year extension with the Manchester Phoenix (England, Premier). This season, he had 30 goals and 46 assists in 48 games. He led the Phoenix in assists and was fifth in the league’s scoring race.
———

TUESDAY’S GAMES:

In Calgary, F Adam Tambellini scored twice, the second one at 3:07 of OT, as the Hitmen beat the Brandon Wheat Kings, 2-1. . . . The Wheat Kings lead the Eastern Conference final 2-1 with Game 4 in Calgary tonight. . . . They’ll play Game 5 in Brandon on Friday night. . . . Brandon had won Game 2, 3-2, in OT on Saturday night when F
Tyler Coulter scored 51 seconds into extra time. . . . Brandon now is 4-1 in OT. . . . The Hitmen now have played in a franchise record eight OT games in these playoffs. They are 5-3, with Tambellini having scored three of the winners. . . . ‘Sudden-Death’ Tambellini? Why not? You may have heard of ‘Sudden-Death’ Mel Hill. He scored three OT goals in one series, sparking the Boston Bruins to a seven-game victory over the New York Rangers in a Stanley Cup semifinal in the spring of 1939. Hill scored in OT in Games 1, 2 and 7. . . . Interestingly, Hill was from Glenboro, Man., which is a couple of slapshots southeast of Brandon. . . . But we digress. . . . Last night, Brandon F John Quenneville opened the scoring at 4:23 of the second period. The Wheat Kings have scored first in each of the three games in this series. . . . Quenneville has a team-high seven playoff goals. . . . Tambellini tied the game, on a PP, at 10:41 of the third period. . . . His winner came from the high slot after Brandon D Ivan Provorov, who uses a freakishly long stick, lost control of the puck as he came out from behind his net. . . . Tambellini now has 12 goals in these playoffs, one behind Portland Winterhawks F Oliver Bjorkstrand, who leads the WHL. Tambellini leads all skaters with 24 points, one more than Bjorkstrand and Portland F Nic Petan. . . . Calgary G Brendan Burke stopped 33 shots, three more than Brandon’s Jordan Papirny. . . . Calgary was 1-for-3 on the PP; Brandon was 0-for-2. . . . Referees were Chris Schlenker and Reagan Vetter. . . . Brandon has won just two of 10 regular-season games in Calgary over the past five seasons. . . . Brandon now is 4-2 on the road in the playoffs; the Hitmen are 5-3 at home. . . . Calgary F Jake Virtanen sat out the second game of a three-game suspension for a hit on Brandon F Tanner Kaspick in Game 1. . . . Kaspick hasn’t played since absorbing that hit early in the third period. . . . D Kale Clague and F Reid Duke also were among Brandon’s scratches, while the Hitmen were without F Chase Lang and F Connor Rankin. . . . Attendance was 5,387. . . . Laurence Heinen wrote this game story for the Calgary Herald.

In Portland, the Winterhawks scored four PP goals en route to a 7-3 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. . . .  Portland leads the Western Conference final 2-1 with Game 4 scheduled for tonight, again in the Moda Center in Portland. . . . The Winterhawks opened a 3-0 lead with two early second-period goals and went on to take a 4-1 lead into the third period where they outscored the visitors, 3-2. . . . F Oliver Bjorkstrand had two goals and two assists for Portland. He leads playoff scorers with 13 goals. His 24 points are one shy of
Calgary F Adam Tambellini, who leads in that category. . . . Portland F Nic Petan drew three assists as he ran his point streak to 14 games. He has a WHL-high 16 assists. . . . Petan also played in his 85th post-season game, tying the franchise record that had belonged to D Derrick Pouliot. Petan should break that record tonight. The WHL record (87) belongs to F Shay Stephenson (Red Deer, 2000-04). . . . The Winterhawks got two assists from D Adam Henry, and the other goals from F Dominic Turgeon, his eighth, D Keoni Texeira (1), F Chase De Leo (4), F Alex Schoenborn (3) and F Paul Bittner (4). . . . F Leon Draisaitl (5), F Cole Linaker (3) and F Riley Stadel (2) countered for Kelowna. . . . Stadel, a defenceman by trade, started on a wing with Leon Draisaitl and Tyson Baillie. The latter had two assists. . . . The Rockets scratched F Justin Kirkland, who played the first two games of the series after returning from injury, and F Gage Quinney, who left Game 1 with an undisclosed injury. . . . Portland G Adin Hill turned aside 41 shots. That included a terrific second period in which he stopped 22 of 23 shots. . . . Kelowna starter Jackson Whistle gave up four goals on 18 shots, leaving for Michael Herringer at 13:51 of the second period. Herringer was beaten three times on 22 shots. . . . Portland was 4-for-8 on the PP; Kelowna was 1-for-4. . . . Portland scored three PP goals while Kelowna F Tyrell Goulbourne was in stir. . . . Attendance was 8,510. . . . Doyle Potenteau of the Kelowna Daily Courier filed this game story.

D Chad Pietroniro of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar has drawn a 14-game QMJHL suspension for an incident that occurred against the Val-d’Or Foreurs on April 21. From the QMJHL website:
“At the end of the game, both teams start discussing a video that was projected on the giant screen. Two players, including the player at fault, started a fight.
“The linesman broke them up. He then accompanied the player at fault and directed him towards the exit door of the Baie-Comeau bench. The player resisted and then left the ice.
“When both skates had left the ice surface the player turned around and head-butted the linesman, helmet to helmet. A major penalty (code 4.92, category 3) was given to the Baie-Comeau player for physical abuse towards an official.
“The rule is clear in these circumstances, a minimum 20 game suspension should be granted.
“However the Director of Player Safety considered the frustration caused by the inappropriate video, the fact the official wasn’t injured and that the headbutt wasn’t at maximum force when making his decision.”
Pietroniro, who turns 19 on July 8, is from Prescott, Ariz. He had one assist in 19 regular-season games with the Drakkar. Last season, he had one assist in seven games with the Foreurs.
——
The Everett Silvertips have had a couple of list players commit to NCAA schools. . . . D Myles Cunningham, a 17-year-old from Minneapolis, has said he will attend Brown University in Providence, R.I. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder played this season at Blake School, a prep school in Hopkins, Minn. . . . G Dayton Rasmussen, a 16-year-old from Eden Prairie, Minn., is off to Denver U. Rasmussen, 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, played this season for the Colorado Thunderbirds U-16 side.

In his last nine starts, he is 9-0 with a .935 save percentage. . . . The Remparts, the host team for the Memorial Cup, will face either the Rimouski Oceanic or Val-d’Or Foreurs in the final. Last night, in Val-d’Or, the Oceanic won 4-2 to take a 3-0 lead. They’ll play again tonight in Val-d’Or. . . .

In the OHL, F Nick Baptiste had four goals and F Connor McDavid drew four assists as the host Erie Otters beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, 7-5. Erie leads that series 3-1 as it returns to the Soo for Game 5 on Thursday. . . . McDavid has 14 points in the first four games of the semifinal. In  13 playoff games, he’s got 18 goals and 17 assists. . . . In last night’s other game, F Ryan Kujawinski scored at 10:28 of OT to give the host North Bay Battalion a 2-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals. The Battalion has a 2-1 lead going into Game 4 tonight in North Bay.

THE COACHING GAME:

QMJHLThe QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders have fired head coach Gordie Dwyer, never mind that the team won its first playoff series in 11 years. The Islanders won a first-round series from the Sherbrooke Phoenix in six games, than was swept by the Quebec Remparts, who will play host to this season’s Memorial Cup. Dwyer, 37, had been there for four seasons.

1. If you are in the Edmonton area today (Wednesday), you will want to be at Sir Winston Churchill Square by 11:45 a.m., because folks will be celebrating the Oil Kings’ Memorial Cup championship. . . . According to a team news release: The fun begins “at 11:45 a.m. with a procession of our champions, southward on 99 Street from 103A Avenue to 102 Avenue. The celebration will then proceed to the stage, located on the south side of Churchill Square. Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and Alberta Premier Dave Hancock will be on hand to celebrate the Oil Kings 2014 Memorial Cup championship. Following the formal celebration, Oil Kings players will be hosting an autograph session, thanking their dedicated fans who helped them reach junior hockey's ultimate prize.”

2. Right-hander Dustin Molleken, who was selected by the Regina Pats in the eighth round of the 1999 WHL bantam draft, is working out of the bullpen of the Nashville Sounds, the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. . . . Going into today’s play, Molleken, the son of Saskatoon Blades head scout Doug Molleken, had thrown 10.2 consecutive scoreless innings over his last six outings. He had struck out 13 in that stretch. . . . This season, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Molleken, who turns 30 on Aug. 21, is 1-2 with one save and a 3.77 ERA.

3. The NHL has yet to commit to having its players perform in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games that are to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea. But what of even beyond then? . . . There is an interesting piece right here that points out how it seems to be getting more and more difficult to find cities interested in bidding for the Games.

KHL4. “The crisis in Ukraine has now entered the hockey world,” writes Travis Hughes at sbnation.com. “Druzhba Arena, the home rink of HC Donbass of the KHL, was severely damaged Monday evening and early Tuesday by pro-Russian militants, who burned and robbed the hockey arena that's stood since 1976. The attack was perpetrated by members of a group that supports the creation of a sovereign ‘Donetsk People's Republic.’ The group is pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian, and HC Donbass called them ‘terrorists’ in a statement after the burning of their arena.” . . . Former NHLer Andrey Nazarov is HC Donbass’ head coach. . . . The arena also is scheduled to play host to the IIHF’s Division 1A World Championship in April. . . . Hughes’s complete report is right here.

They reached the final of the TELUS Cup national championship tournament earlier this month. . . . ---
From Dan Shulman (@DShulman_ESPN), who was watching the New York Rangers and host Montreal Canadiens last night: “I'm no hockey expert, but these hits to the head are terrifying.”
---
From Terry Koshan (@koshtorontosun): “Why players push opposing players on to their own goalie is one of hockey's great mysteries, never to be solved.”

From Butch Goring (@91Butch), who should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame: “Love the refs calling the embellishments. Hockey is a man's game, not a place for shady individuals looking for something free.” . . . Check him out on Twitter; yes, his avatar is that helmet.
