Helping Slave Lake . . .

Edmonton Oil Kings F T.J. Foster, who is from fire-ravaged Slave Lake, sends word that multiple hair salons in the Edmonton area will be taking part in fundraisers on Saturday, May 28. . . . All money that is raised, through men’s haircuts or donations, will go to the Red Cross to benefit the good people of Slave Lake. . . . . Why men’s haircuts? Because, notes organizer Haley Almeida, “they are done much faster than woman’s, therefore more haircuts being accomplished in a day.” . . . So, men, here’s your chance to help out. And, if you just got your ears lowered, think about stopping by and making a donation.

Foster's mother, siblings escape to Redwater

These are tough days for T.J. Foster, a forward with the Edmonton Oil Kings.
But the native of Slave Lake, Alta., knows at least that his mother and two siblings are safe.
Foster, who turns 19 on May 28, has played three seasons with the Oil Kings, but nothing could have prepared him for what happened Sunday when a good piece of his hometown was lost to wildfires.
However, there was better news for him Monday evening when he reported there wasn’t “really anything new.”
He knows that his mother Lisa, sisters Paige and Sutton, and brother Thomas are safe. In fact, they escaped from the path of the fires and now are with relatives in Redwater, Alta., which is 52 kilometres north of Edmonton. (For reference, Slave Lake is 250 km northwest of Edmonton.)
While Foster said his mother and siblings are safe, he said his father, Troy, “is still fighting it.”
In other words, Troy is still among those fighting the fires.
T.J. would love nothing better than to get up there and help out but, as he said, officials “aren’t letting civilians in there yet.”
Foster also admitted that the last few days haven’t been easy.
“It’s really tough,” he said, “especially when they were stuck in Slave Lake because I had no idea what the situation was there and how threatening of a situation they were in.
“It’s nice knowing that my family is in a safe location away from the fire and I just hope my Dad is doing all he can to be safe while fighting the fires.”
Foster had one other piece of good news last night.
As of then, the family home still was standing . . . untouched by fire.
