A Royal time at camps

THE MacBETH REPORT:
G Barry Brust (Spokane, Calgary, 2000-04) signed a one-year contract with Medvescak Zagreb (Croatia, KHL). He had a 2.50 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 35 games with the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) last season. . . .
D Spencer Humphries (Tri-City, Calgary, 2008-13) signed a one-year contract with Lev Prague (Czech Republic, KHL), after Lev traded a second-round pick in the 2014 KHL draft to Traktor Chelyabinsk in return for Humphries' KHL rights. Humphries, a fifth-round pick by Traktor in the 2012 KHL junior draft, had five goals and 33 assists in 70 games for the Hitmen last season.
———
ECHLBrian Sandy, who spent six seasons in the front office of the Tri-City Americans, has been named president and alternate governor of the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder. . . . Sandy was the Americans’ chief marketing officer and senior vice-president, business operations with the Americans (2005-11). . . . Most recently, he served IMG College as associate general manager for the athletic department of the University of Arizona. . . . Sandy replaces Dan Chapman, who has accpeted the associate athletic director’s position with the University of the Pacific.
———
OHLSwedish F Andre Burakovsky was selected by the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 2013 NHL draft. And he was taken by the OHL’s Erie Otters with the fifth pick of the CHL’s 2013 import draft. But he apparently isn’t too happy about that. In fact, he seems he might prefer to play for the Windsor Spitfires. Too bad. “This isn’t free agency,” Erie general manager Sherry Bassin tells Sunaya Sapurji of Yahoo! Sports. “This is a draft.”
There’s more right here.
———
The Victoria Royals have five players in NHL development camps this week. . . . F Austin Carroll, 19, is with the Calgary Flames as a free-agent invitee. . . . F Steven Hodges, 19, was selected by Florida in the third round of the NHL’s 2012 draft, and is in the Panthers’ development camp. . . . D Keegan Kanzig, 18, taken by the Flames in the third round of last month’s draft, is in Calgary’s camp. . . . F Logan Nelson, who is preparing for his 20-year-old season, is with the Buffalo Sabres. hey took him in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL draft. . . . F Ben Walker, who turned 20 on June 21, is from Edina, Minn., and is in the Minnesota Wild’s camp as a free-agent invitee.

THE COACHING GAME:
ECHL
Tim Branham is the new general manager and head coach of the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies. Branham, 32, spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach with the Reading Royals, who won the ECHL championship in 2012-13. . . . With Utah, he replaces Kevin Colley, who left Utah to take over as head coach of the Central League’s Arizona Sun Dogs.

Apparently, pigs can fly.
That’s what you think when you hear that the Seattle Thunderbirds have made a trade with their fiercest rivals, the Everett Silvertips.
But that’s what happened Sunday when the Thunderbirds dealt G Daniel Cotton, 18, to Everett for a 2014 sixth-round bantam draft pick. (The Seattle news release had the deal for a sixth-round pick; Everett’s news release reported it is a “conditional” sixth-rounder.)
Cotton, 0-8-0 in 18 appearances with the Thunderbirds while backing up Calvin Pickard over the last two seasons, had yet to play for Seattle this season. Last season, he was 0-8-0, 4.91, .876.
But it has been obvious for a while that Seattle will go with Brandon Glover, 20, as its starter, with Justin Myles, 17, in a support role.
The 6-foot-5 Cotton, who is from Vancouver, had not appeared in a Seattle game yet this season.
Everett lost G Austin Lotz, 17, to a groin injury during the second period of a 5-2 loss to the host Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
Cotton joined the Silvertips immediately and was on the bench, backing up Cole Holowenko, as Everett played host to the Tr-City Americans on Sunday night. Cotton came on in relief to stop 14 shots as Everett dropped a 5-3 decision to Tri-City.
The Silvertips now head out on a six-game swing into the East Division that opens Friday in Brandon.
———
Interestingly, the Silvertips, as Nick Patterson of the Everett Herald points out, have traded for three goaltenders since July.
On July 23, Everett dealt F Geordie Maguire to the Brandon Wheat Kings for G Brandon Anderson and a 2013 fifth-round bantam draft pick. Anderson, 20, is with the ECHL's Reading Royals at the moment.
Then, on Sept. 17, Everett got Cole Holowenko from the Prince Albert Raiders for G Andy Desautels and D Evan Morden.
———
F Nicolas Kerdiles had 48 points, including 22 goals, with the U.S. NTDP U-18 team last season. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder was a second-round selection, 36th overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL draft. This season, the Irvine, Calif., native was going to play with the U of Wisconsin Badgers. . . . But somethine has gone awry and he was declared ineligible for a game the Badgers played Saturday. . . . No one seems quite sure what is going on, but Kerdiles’ WHL rights are owned by the Kelowna Rockets. . . . Kelly Friesen of Yahoo! Sports has more right here.
———
G Spencer Tremblay, 18, who was released last month by the Moose Jaw Warriors, is joining the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats. Tremblay, from Winnipeg, got into 20 games with the Warriors last season. He was 7-4-3, 3.62, .896.

SUNDAY’S STUFF:
D Spencer Humphries scored on the PP at 4:11 of OT to give the host Calgary Hitmen a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings. . . . That ruined a terrific game by Edmonton F T.J. Foster, who scored his side’s first four goals. . . . This was Foster’s first four-game game but the third hat trick of his career. It also was the first four-goal game in the modern day history of the Oil Kings, who came into the WHL in 2007-08. . . . The Hitmen are 2-0-0 versus Edmonton this season. . . . Edmonton F Michael St. Croix forced OT with a PP goal at 19:20 of the third. . . . Calgary D Alex Roach, who had four goals in each of his first two seasons, had two goals and and an assist, and was plus-4. . . .

F Austin Carroll’s PP goal at 6:15 of the second period broke a 1-1 tie and the Victoria Royals went on to a 2-1 victory over the host Vancouver Giants. . . . Victoria G Patrik Polivka got the victory with a 29-save performance. . . . Vancouver F Cain Franson came up empty on a penalty shot at 18:29 of the third period. . . . The Royals went 2-1-0 in a three-in-three road swing. They are back on the road Wednesday, against the Blazers in Kamloops, before enjoying a four-game homestand. The Royals then will play seven in a row on the road and then return for six straight at home. . . .

The Prince Albert Raiders continue to tear it up, scoring the first four goals and going on to beat the Kootenay Ice, 5-3, in Cranbrook. . . . The Raiders now are 6-0-1 and have the WHL’s best winning percentage (.929). . . . The Raiders are 3-0-0 on a four-game swing into the Central Division that wraps up Tuesday in Lethbridge. . . . F Shane Danyluk scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist for the Raiders. . . . F Sam Reinhart drew three assists for the Ice. He has eight points in five games. . . . D Davis Vandane scored Prince Albert’s second goal in his first game since being acquired from the Spokane Chiefs. . . . F Leon Draisaitl, the Raiders’ exciting German freshman, scored his first goal and added an assist. . . . G Andy Desautels, in his first appearance with the Raiders since being acquired from the Everett Silvertips, stopped 26 shots for the victory. . . . An 18-year-old from White City, Sask., Desautels hadn’t appeared in a WHL game since March 20, 2011, when he played 9:37 for the Everett Silvertips in a 5-0 loss to the Giants in Vancouver. He came on in relief of Luke Siemens in that one. . . . Siemens now is the Raiders’ starter, with Desautels in a backup role. . . .

F Matt Bellerive scored the only goal of the shootout as the visiting Red Deer Rebels dumped the Moose Jaw Warriors, 4-3. . . . F Cory Millette, who is from Storthoaks, Sask., and played for the midget AAA Moose Jaw Generals, forced OT with a goal at 19:11 of the third. . . . F Sam Fioretti scored his seventh goal of the season for Moose Jaw. He has 12 points and a share of the WHL scoring lead. . . . However, Fioretti, Moose Jaw’s third shooter in the circus, hit the crossbar. . . . The Warriors had won 19 straight regular-season home games. . . .

The Tri-City Americans jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then hung on for a 5-3 victory over the host Everett Silvertips. . . . Tri-City scored four goals on 16 shots to drive Everett starter Cole Holowenko to the bench at 6:03 of the second period. . . . G Daniel Cotton, acquired earlier in the day from Seattle, came on to stop all 14 shots he faced. . . . The Americans are 4-3-1 with three of those victories over Everett. . . . The Americans open their six-game East Division swing in Brandon on Saturday.

The Kontinental Hockey League has completed its five-round entry draft during which 166 players were selected.
It was held in Chelyabinski and drew about 3,000 fans.
The complete draft is right here.
D Martin Gernat of the Edmonton Oil Kings was the first WHL player selected, going 19th overall to Salavat Yulaev.
F Sven Baertschi of the Portland Winterhawks was selected by Severstal in the third round.
D Spencer Humphries of the Calgary Hitmen was taken by Traktor Chelyabinsk in the fifth round. He was the fourth-last player selected.

Here’s the lead to a story by Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle:
“To his Rochester Americans teammates, Sean McMorrow was the guy who never complained, the guy whose job it was to fight his own on-ice battles — and sometimes everyone else’s.
“To the children who attended area schools, who played at community recreation centers, read at public libraries and got well at local hospitals, he was a pro athlete with a big smile and an even bigger heart.
“But to the FBI and the United States Attorney’s Office, McMorrow was a drug smuggler and drug trafficker, a guy who toted marijuana and money tainted with the smell of pot to and/or from his offseason home in Toronto.”
The complete story, and it’s a good one, is right here.
———
Former WHL D Pat Pylypuik (Calgary, Lethbridge, 1986-91) is the commissioner of the Midwest Junior Hockey League, a junior A Tier III circuit that hopes to have 14 teams when it opens its first season in the fall.
James Cook of the Traverse City Record Eagle has that story right here.
---
JUST NOTES:
F John Persson of the Red Deer Rebels has signed a three-year deal with the NHL’s New York Islanders. They selected him in the fifth round of the 2011 draft. . . . Persson, a 20-year-old Swede, played three seasons with the Rebels, picking up 130 points, including 63 goals, in 200 games. . . .
The Vancouver Giants have signed F Ty Ronning and F Jesse Roach. . . . Ronning, from Burnaby, B.C., was a first-round selection in the 2012 bantam draft. He is the son of former NHLer Cliff Ronning. . . . Roach, a third-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft, is from Quesnel, B.C., and is the brother of Calgary Hitmen D Alex Roach. . . .

The incomparable Roy MacGregor writes right here about the difference between coaching defence and coaching offence, which explains why the game of hockey is going in a defensive direction right now. He also mentions micromanaging and over-coaching. Gee, you think?

THE COACHING GAME:
Kelly Guard is the Prince Albert Raiders’ new goaltending coach. Guard, who is from Prince Albert, played two seasons with the Kelowna Rockets, helping them to a WHL title in 2003 and the Memorial Cup championship in 2004. He takes over from Evan Lindsay with the Raiders.

The Wenatchee Wild won’t be joining the BCHL, at least not for the 2012-13 season. . . . The BCHL has denied the Wild’s request for entry, so the Wild has withdrawn its request for dormancy within the NAHL and owner Bill Stewart has said the team will play in that league next season. . . . The Wild is expected to continue its attempt to get into the BCHL, now aiming for the 2013-14 season. . . . The Wenatchee World reports: “The Wild has been pursuing a move to the BCHL for travel reasons. In the NAHL, its closest opponents are 920 miles away (Fresno, Calif., and Dawson Creek, B.C.), while all 16 BCHL teams are within 635 miles of Wenatchee.”

The QMJHL has suspended Benoit Groulx, the head coach of the Gatineau Olympiques, for two games after he threw a few sticks and a garbage can during a game on Wednesday. . . . Groulx will miss his club’s last two regular-season games, both of them in Rouyn-Noranda against the Huskies.

Winnipeg’s hockey community is mourning the death of Dave (The Wrecker) Hrechkosy. He died early this month from brain cancer. Doug Lunney of the Winnipeg Sun takes a look back right here.

FRIDAY’S GAMES:
In Prince Albert, the Moose Jaw Warriors scored the game’s last four goals and beat the Raiders, 4-1. . . . With the victory, the Warriors tied franchise records for victories (44) and points (96) set in 2005-06. The Warriors can break both those records tonight when the Raiders visit Moose Jaw. . . . F Brayden Point scored his first WHL goal for Moose Jaw. Point, the 14th overall pick in the 2011 bantam draft, was playing in his fourth game. . . . Moose Jaw F Cam Braes scored his 40th goal. . . . F James Henry was among the Warriors’ scratches. Head coach Mike Stothers told Matthew Gourlie of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald that Henry was “attending to some personal issues.” Henry isn’t expected to play tonight either. . . . The Warriors have won three in a row. . . . The Warriors will be the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed but won’t know until tonight who will provide the first-round opposition. . . .

In Regina, F Michael Ferland scored twice to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 2-1 victory over the Pats. . . . Ferland has 47 goals, eight of which have been against the Pats. . . . F Matej Stransky had his 38th goal and two assists for the Blades. . . . It was Scratch City before this one. . . . The Broncos, who were playing their final home game, also scratched six players, although three of those were due to numbers. . . . The Blades were without six players, including D Tommy Stipancik, who has been plagued by concussion-related problems and now has mononucleosis, and backup goaltender Adam Todd, who is injured. D Dalton Thrower also remains out, along with D Matt Pufahl and F Michael Burns. Todd was hit in the head by a puck during practice on Thursday and is expected to sit for at least 10 days with a concussion. The Blades had G Patrick Johnson, an 18-year-old from Saskatoon, on the bench. He played in the SJHL with the Kindersley Klippers and Melfort Mustangs this season. . . . You’re wondering about G Alex Moodie, who played so well for the Blades in January. His midget AAA Winnipeg Wild opened the best-of-five Manitoba league final last night with a 4-1 victory over the Southwest Cougars in the Manitoba capital. Game 2 is Sunday in Souris, Man. . . . The Blades won their 40th game and are one point ahead of Regina and Kootenay. . . .

Medicine Hat is tied for third with Calgary but the Hitmen have one more victory. . . .

In Cranbrook, the Calgary Hitmen erased a 4-0 first-period deficit and beat the Kootenay Ice 6-5 in OT. . . . D Spencer Humphries won it with a PP goal just 59 seconds into OT. . . . The Ice took a 5-3 lead into the last minute of the third period. . . . Calgary F Jimmy Bubnick got his 34th goal at 19:03 and F Greg Chase tied it with his sixth goal at 19:18. . . . Cougars F Campbell Elynuik took a cross-checking major and game misconduct late in the third period and will be suspended for tonight’s rematch in Prince George. . . . The Blazers will be the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference but don’t yet know who they will play. . . .

In Spokane, F Burke Gallimore’s 100th career goal, at 15:51 of the third period, gave the Seattle Thunderbirds a 4-3 victory over the Chiefs. . . . With Gallimore driving to the net, a Colin Jacobs centring pass went off one of his skates and over Spokane G Eric Williams. Video review determined there wasn’t a kicking motion involved and the goal stood. . . . F Dylan Walchuk gave the Chiefs a 3-2 lead at 13:08 of the second period. . . . Seattle F Colin Jacobs tied it with 31 seconds left in the period. . . . F Marek Kalus scored his 20th goal for Spokane. . . . Seattle G Calvin Pickard stopped 36 shots. . . . F Brendan Shinnimin had two assists as he ran his point streak to 22 games, matching the franchise record set by Colton Yellow Horn in 2007-08. . . . Shinnimin leads the WHL with 133 points, 14 more than Brandon F Mark Stone. . . . Tri-City F Patrick Holland drew one assist, running his assist streak to 19 games. . . . The Americans won their 50th game, the first CHL team to get there this season. It is the second time in franchise history the Americans have won 50; they also did it in 2007-08. . . . The Americans are one point behind Edmonton, which leads the overall standings. . . . Everett is tied for eighth with Seattle and the teams meet tonight in Kent, Wash. A Seattle victory clinches a playoff spot and eliminates Everett. . . . An Everett victory would mean Seattle would have to win in Portland on Sunday to force a sudden-death playoff game. If it comes to that, Everett would play Seattle in Kent on Tuesday. . . . If Seattle wins both its remaining game, it finishes seventh, with Victoria eighth. . . .

In Victoria, G Keith Hamilton stopped 37 shots to lead the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Portland Winterhawks. . . . The Royals had beaten the visiting Winterhawks 4-3 on Wednesday. . . .
