G Leland Irving (Everett, 2003-08) signed a one-month try-out contract with Jokerit Helsinki (Finland, SM-Liiga). He had a 3.33 GAA and a .883 save percentage in six games with the Calgary Flames (NHL) and a 3.40 GAA and a .884 save percentage in 12 games with the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) last season. . . .

F Brad Schell (Spokane, 1999-2004) signed a one-year contract with Milan Rossoblu (Italy, Serie A). He had 15 goals and 49 assists in 44 games with Lillehammer (Norway, GET-Ligaen) last season to finish fifth in league scoring and second in the league in assists. . . .

F Ales Kilnar (Vancouver, 2012-13) signed a one-year plus option contract with Orli Znojmo (Czech Republic, Austria Erste Bank Liga) after a successful tryout. He had two goals and one assist in five exhibition games during his two-week trial. Last season, Kilnar had no points in one game with the Vancouver Giants, no points in three games with Jokipojat Joensuu U20 (Finland, A-Junior SM-Liiga), four goals and seven assists in 15 games with Vitkovice Ostrava U20 (Czech Republic, Extraliga U20), and three goals and three assists in seven games on loan to Poruba (Czech Republic, 2. Liga). . . .

F Jaroslav Kristek (Tri-City, 1998-2000) signed a one-year contract extension with Neman Grodno (Belarus). He had 21 goals and 33 assists in 42 games last season to finish second in league scoring for the league champions from Grodno.

Rob Henderson of the Brandon Sun reports that F Tyrel Seaman won’t be with the Brandon Wheat Kings when they open camp on Aug. 28.
Henderson writes: “Wheat Kings head coach/GM Kelly McCrimmon said . . . Seaman, who hasn’t played since Nov. 18, 2012 due to concussion issues, won’t be at training camp next week.”
Seaman, a 19-year-old from Choiceland, Sask., had eight points in 24 games last season, after putting up 19 points in 32 games as a sophomore. In 2010-11, he had eight points in 52 games.
Seaman suffered a brain injury in late November 2011, came back after the Christmas break and was re-injured in his first game back. He returned to play in the regular-season’s last four games.

The Moose Jaw Warriors selected two Russian players — D Alexei Sleptsov and F Alexander Chirva — in the CHL’s 2013 import draft. They expect Sleptsov to arrive today, but Chirva’s arrival has been delayed. It seems a strike by Canada’s foreign service workers is causing problems with the visa process.

Gourlie also has reported that F Jordan Wyton, 20, won’t be returning to the Warriors, choosing instead to play for the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits. That leaves the Warriors with two 20-year-olds on their roster — F Todd Fiddler and F Sam Fioretti.

The Moose Jaw Warriors have traded D Spencer Morse, 18, to the Red Deer Rebels for an undisclosed conditional selection in the 2016 WHL bantam draft. Morse, from Calgary, was a second-round selection by Moose Jaw in the 2010 bantam draft. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder had five points in 46 games with the Warriors last sesaon. The pick starts out as a 10th-rounder and can improve from there, depending on what Morse brings to Red Deer.

Kevin Sawyer is back with the Spokane Chiefs, this time as a part-time assistant coach working in the areas of player development and player evaluation. Sawyer, a former Chiefs captain (1994-95) and assistant coach, will work on a monthly basis. Last season, he filled a similar role while Spokane head coach Don Nachbaur was away as an assistant coach with Canada’s national junior team. Sawyer also was an assistant with the Chiefs from 2004-06. He also has worked on Chiefs’ broadcasts on SWX and WHL telecasts on Root Sports.

F Derek Dorsett (Medicine Hat, 2004-07) signed a lockout contract with Red Bull Salzburg (Austria, Erste Bank Liga). He had 12 goals and eight assists in 77 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. The contract with Red Bull is for the rest of this season with a release clause should the lockout end before the end of the season. . . .
F Zack Smith (Swift Current, 2004-08) signed a lockout contract with Frederikshavn (Denmark, AL-Bank Liga). He had 14 goals and 12 assists in 81 games with the Ottawa Senators last season. The contract is for the rest of this season with a release clause should the lockout end before the end of the season.

D Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks is likely to be the first or second player chosen in the NHL’s 2013 draft in June, assuming the lockout doesn’t kill that, too. But what does it mean? What would be the impact if Jones was the No. 1 selection?

The Red Deer Rebels have added G Spencer Tremblay, 18, to their roster as a third goaltender. He joins Patrik Bartosak, 19, and Bolton Pouliot, 18. . . . Brent Sutter, the Rebels’ owner, general manager and interim head coach, told Greg Meachem of the Red Deer Advocate that he’s looking down the road a month or so. . . . “We have a situation here where there’s a good possibility Bartosak is going to leave for the world junior championship, which means he’d be gone for a month,” Sutter told Meachem. “During that time we’re going to need two goaltenders who can give us opportunities to win games. I didn’t want to take a 15- or 16-year-old out of a midget program, I just felt it was best if we could get a more experienced guy to come in here and compete with Bolton for the backup job for the rest of the (calendar) year.” . . . Tremblay got into 20 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors last season. They released him prior to the start of this season and after clearing WHLwaivers he joined the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats. They let him go earlier this month after he played in three games. . . . Tremblay practised with the Rebels on Monday. The Rebels next play Friday when they entertain t he Medicine Hat Tigers.

F Alessio Bertaggia might be back in Brandon’s lineup tonight as the Wheat Kings visit the Broncos in Swift Current. Bertaggia missed weekend games with an undisclosed injury. Brandon D Ryan Pulock isn’t likely to play tonight, while F Jens Meilleur and F Tyrel Seaman are out. They, too, have undisclosed injuries. . . . The Wheat Kings and Broncos will play each other three times over the next five nights. They’ll play again Wednesday in Brandon and then meet Saturday in Swift Current. . . .
D Martin Gernat of the Edmonton Oil Kings skated Monday for the first time this season. He had shoulder surgery in his native Czech Republic in September. Gernat, 19, isn’t expected to play again until after Christmas. On Monday, he skated for a few minutes but was only wearing sweats. He had 55 points in 60 games as a freshman last season. . . .
The Saskatoon Blades returned home Sunday from a five-game B.C. Division swing. But there isn’t much chance to rest as they play host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes tonight. . . . Saskatoon F Adam Kambeitz (flu) missed practice on Monday. If he can’t play tonight, the Blades will be able to dress only nine forwards. . . . “If you look at some our players’ faces, there are lots of bruises and lots of stitches,” Lorne Molleken, the Blades general manager and head coach, told Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. “Obviously, we had lots of upper-body injuries out there.” . . . The Blades expect to have D Duncan Siemens back in the lineup. He missed the last two games while spending time with his ill father, Errol, in Sherwood Park, Alta. . . .
The WHL’s top six scorers as the week begins all come from two forward lines — the Kamloops unit that features Colin Smith between Tim Bozon and JC Lipon, and the Portland line that has Brendan Leipsic playing between Ty Rattie and Nic Petan. . . . Lipon has 53 points, followed by Smith (52), Petan (44), and Bozon, Leipsic and Rattie ( each 38). . . .

F Roman Tomanek (Calgary, Seattle, 2004-06) was released by Banska Bystrica (Slovakia, Extraliga). He had eight goals and four assists in 23 games for Banska Bystrica this season. Tomanek started the season with Mlada Boleslav (Czech Republic, Extraliga), going pointless in seven games. . . .
D Aris Brimanis (Brandon, 1992-93) signed a contract for the rest of this season with Hannover Indians (Germany, 2.Bundesliga). He had six goals and 13 assists in 52 games with the Hannover Scorpions (Germany, DEL) last season.

The Prince George Cougars dealt F Charles Inglis, 19, to the Red Deer Rebels for F Daulton Siwak and a third-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft.
Inglis had been sent home by the Cougars following a game on Dec. 2 in Kamloops. From what I understand, he was found in violation of a team rule that, while by itself may not have been considered a big deal, was the last straw.
Inglis, selected fourth overall by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2007 bantam draft, has a lot of talent but hasn’t been able to harness it off the ice. He put up 60 points, including 32 goals, in 69 games with the Cougars last season and had 16 points, nine of them goals, in 16 games when he was sent home this season. He has twice attended NHL camps, first with the Phoenix Coyotes and then with the San Jose Sharks.
Siwak, from Olds, Alta., had seven points, including five gaols, in 18 games. He was in his third season with the Rebels.

The Saskatoon Blades have traded D Devan Fafard, 17, and a seventh-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft to the Red Deer Rebels for D Matthew Pufahl, 18, and F Locke Muller, 18.
Fafard, an eighth-round pick by Saskatoon in the 2009 bantam draft, has two assists and 38 penalty minutes in 23 games. He is from Carlyle, Sask.
Pufahl, who is from Saskatoon, has four points in 30 games. He was a fourth-round pick by Red Deer in the 2008 bantam draft.
Muller, from St. Paul, Alta., has six points in 33 games.

JUST NOTES:
F Tyrel Seaman of the Brandon Wheat Kings played Wednesday in a 3-2 OT victory over the visiting Regina Pats. It was his first appearance after missing nine games with a concussion. Bruce Luebke, the radio voice of the Wheat Kings, reports that Seaman didn’t practice Thursday. “It appears there may have been a whiplash affect on Seaman after he was on the back end of a domino collision involving defenceman Ryley Miller and Regina forward Jordan Weal,” Luebke reported. . . . It wasn’t known Thursday whether Seaman would be able to play tonight against the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings. . . .
The Calgary Hitmen boarded their bus in Prince George on Thursday at 10 a.m., and headed south to Kamloops where they are to play the Blazers tonight.
Unfortunately, there was a serious accident on the highway and the Hitmen, along with a whole lot of other people, spent a good part of their day just sitting. The Hitmen arrived at Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops just after 7:30 p.m., what normally is about a six-hour drive turned into almost a 10-hour day.
The Cougars, who beat the Hitmen 3-1 on Wednesday, avoided the accident – they actually left after the game and headed for Vancouver, where they are to play the Giants tonight.

It would appear that Portland Winterhawks F Sven Bartschi, who is playing for Switzerland at the World Junior Chamionship, has a concussion and is out indefinitely. Bartschi was injured when he took a hit in a 4-3 shootout loss to Sweden on Wednesday.
Swiss head coach Manuele Celio has said that he doesn’t expect Bartschi to play today against Latvia and that he isn’t sure when he might play again.
“He got a hit in the (neutral) zone,” Celio told reporters. “He wasn’t prepared for it. He didn’t feel really good after the hit. So now the doctors try to check on him, look at what’s going on in neck, head; could be like a concussion now.”
Bartschi, whose NHL rights belong to the Calgary Flames, has already put up an amazing 54 points, including 42 assists, in 25 games with the Winterhawks. . . .

A couple of former prominent WHLer signed PTO deals on Thursday. . . . The AHL’s Abbotsford Heat signed F Judd Blackwater, who spent three seasons with the Spokane Chiefs (2005-08). He has 37 points in 31 games with the ECHL’s Las Vegas Wrangers. . . . Meanwhile, the Toronto Marlies have signed D Ray Macias, who played for the Kamloops Blazers (2003-07). The smooth-skating Macias has eight points in 19 games with the ECHL’s Reading Royals. . . .

In Prince Albert, F Anthony Bardaro drew two assists in his first game with the Raiders as they beat the Saskatoon Blades, 5-2. . . . The Raiders now have won five in a row to close within six points of a playoff spot. . . . The Blades scored the game’s first two goals before the first period was five minutes old. D Duncan Siemens got the first one, his fifth of the season. That matches his career high. He has five goals in 36 games this season; he had five in 72 last season. . . . The Raiders held their annual Toque Toss (fans throw toques, scarves and mitts) and D Matt Waseylenko, playing in his second WHL game, got the goal. . . . The Raiders took 60 of 106 penalty minutes. . . . Saskatoon has lost five in a row. . . .
In Red Deer, F Tyson Ness had two goals and an assist to lead the Rebels to a 4-2 victory over the Kootenay Ice. . . . Ness has 11 goals on the season. . . . His 16 points in 35 games are two more than he had in 68 games last season when he had seven goals and seven assists. . . . Both Ice goals came via the PP. . . . D Devan Fafard and F Charles Inglis, both acquired earlier in the day, were in Red Deer’s lineup. . . . Red Deer G Deven Dubyk stopped 31 shots. . . .
In Lethbridge, F Hunter Shinkaruk had a goal and two assists to help the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Hurricanes. . . . Shinkaruk, 17, has 51 points, including 31 goals, in 38 games. Last season, he finished with 42 points, 14 of them goals, in 63 games. . . . The Hurricanes took 58 of 74 penalty minutes. The Tigers, who have won four straight, were assessed two fighting majors and three minors. . . . The Tigers were 2-9 on the PP; the Hurricanes were 0-3. . . .
In Kennewick, Wash., F Brendan Shinnimin had three goals and an assist and was plus-4 as his Tri-City Americans beat the Kelowna Rockets, 5-1, for their ninth straight victory. . . . Shinnimin broke open a 1-1 game with back-to-back shorthanded goals at 4:05 and 8:07 of the second period. . . . He added his third goal at 5:11 of the third, giving him a natural hat trick. . . . He has 20 goals now, thanks to his first regular-season three-goal game. This was his 231^st game. . . . Tri-City G Ty Rimmer stopped 33 shots. . . .

In Tecumseh, Ont., F Sam Reinhart (Kootenay) scored twice as Team Pacific scored a 5-2 victory over Team West in the opening game for both teams at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge. . . . Macoy Erkamps (Lethbridge), Morgan Klimchuk (Regina) and Curtis Lazar (Edmonton), the latter into an empty net, also scored for the winners. . . . Nick Zajac (Saskatoon) and Remi Laurencelle replied for Team West. . . . Laurencelle plays for the midget AAA Winnipeg Wild. He was an eighth-round pick by Lethbridge in the WHL’s 2010 bantam draft. . . . Eric Comrie (Tri-City) was in goal for Team Pacific and saw only 14 shots. . . . There were 34 WHL players suited up for the game. . . . G Austin Lotz (Everett) stopped 34 shots for Team West.

F Evan Bloodoff, who completed his junior eligibility last season with the Kelowna Rockets, has signed a two-year contract with the AHL’s Portland Pirates.
Bloodoff was a sixth-roud selection by the Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL’s 2009 draft. The Pirates are the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate.
A native of Nelson, B.C., Bloodoff played five seasons with the Rockets. Last season, he had 44 points, including 22 goals, and 76 penalty minutes in 72 games.
Bloodoff is represented by Turning Point Sport Management.

JUST NOTES: The QMJHL’s P.E.I. Rocket has claimed D Dane Phaneuf, 17, off WHL waivers. The Prince George Cougars had released him prior to the start of this season. Phaneuf, the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, was a third-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft. . . . The Swift Current Broncos have assigned G Steven Myland to the junior B North Delta Devils of the Pacific International junior league. Myland, from Cloverdale, B.C., had a 5.41 GAA and .818 save percentage in two appearances with the Broncos this season. A 10th-round selection by the Kootenay Ice in the 2009 bantam draft, Myland was acquired by the Broncos in the blockbuster Cody Eakin swap in January. . . . Curtis Hunt, who was dropped as head coach of the Regina Pats after last season, has been named co-coach of the Canadian team that will play in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, Jan. 13-22. This team will comprise 1996-born players. The other co-coach will be Jim Hulton of Kingston, Ont., who is a veteran of the OHL coaching wars. . . . Hunt also is head coach of the team that will represent Saskatchewan at the U-16 Challenge Cup in Moose Jaw, Oct. 27-30.

In Cranbrook, F Elgin Pearce broke a 1-1 tie with a PP goal at 15:30 of the third period to give the Kootenay Ice a 2-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. . . . Ice F Drew Czerwonka, named team captain earlier in the week, returned from an injury to score his first goal of the season. . . .
In Edmonton, the Regina Pats got two goals from D Blair Davidson and three assists from D Brandon Underwood in beating the Oil Kings, 6-3. . . . Regina lost F Dyson Stevenson to an apparent leg injury in the third period. He was stretchered off after absorbing a hit from Edmonton D Mark Pysyk, who wasn’t penalized. . . . The Oil Kings had won three in a row. . . . Regina is 5-1-0 on the road. . . .
In Moose Jaw, the Warriors scored the game’s first three goals, all in the first period, and beat the Swift Current Broncos, 3-2. . . . F Brett Lyon had a goal and an assist for Moose Jaw. Lyon, 20, now has career highs in goals (6), assists (7) and points (13), all in just nine games. . . . The start of the game was delayed by 70 minutes due to an ice problem in one goal crease. . . .
In Everett, F Jesse Paradis scored his third shorthanded goal of the season to help the Saskatoon Blades open a U.S. trip with a 4-2 victory over the Silvertips. . . . The Blades have won four in a row. . . . F Darian Dziurzynski scored his third goal in as many games for Saskatoon. . . . Everett G Austin Lotz made his first WHL debut with 50 saves. . . .

The Wheat Kings, including F Alessio Bertaggia, are scheduled to play the Winterhawks in Portland tonight. Bertaggia may be better known to Winterhawks’ fans as Red No. 23, after his anonymous appearance at one training camp practice prior to the 2010-11 season. Brandon F Mark Stone, who leads the WHL with 20 points, is riding an eight-game season-opening point streak. He had two assists last night. . . .
In Victoria, the Royals scored the game’s last five goals and beat the Kelowna Rockets, 7-5. . . . The Rockets, who now have lost four in a row after opening 3-0-0, led this one 5-2 at 8:30 of the second period and 5-3 after two periods. . . . Victoria F Lukas Kralik broke a 5-5 tie at 14:27 of the third period. . . . Kelowna D Kevin Smith (shoulder) was injured in the pregame warmup and didn’t play. . . .
In Vancouver, D Kyle Verdino’s first goal of the season broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Seattle Thunderbirds a 3-2 victory over the Giants. . . . Verdino’s goal came at 16:53 of the third period. The 20-year-old Verdino recently returned to Seattle after a tryout with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. . . . Seattle outshot the Giants, 37-20. . . . Vancouver D Luke Fenske (broken hand) played his first game since being injured during training camp. . . .
In Spokane, F Anthony Bardaro’s ninth goal of the season gave the Chiefs a 3-2 OT victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . Bardardo’s goal came at 3:10 of extra time. . . . Spokane F Collin Valcourt forged a 2-2 tie at 10:00 of the third period.
In Portland, Kamloops G Cam Lanigan stopped two penalty shots as the Blazers beat the Winterhawks 5-4 in OT. . . . F Brendan Ranford had four goals, including the winner 21 seconds into extra time, and an assist. It was his first career five-point night and four-goal game. . . . Lanigan finished with 37 saves. He stopped F Brad Ross on a penalty shot at 14:21 of the second period and F Taylor Peters on a second one at 18:28 of the third. . . . According to Todd Vrooman and Andy Kemper, on the Winterhawks’ postgame show, this was the first time Portland has been involved in a game that featured two penalty shots.
