Thursday's notes . . .

Cleaning out the notebook while trying to decipher Thursday's trades (check back because a number of players have been released or reassigned and I am simply updating the portion slugged ODDS AND ENDS) . . .

ODDS AND ENDS: The Red Deer Rebels have assigned F Spencer Edwards, 17, to the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals. Edwards, the 192nd pick in the 2005 bantam draft, had four points and 21 penalty minutes in 30 games with the Rebels. . . . The Vancouver Giants have assigned D Justin Palazzo, 18, to the BCHL's Vernon Vipers. The Giants got Palazzo from Prince Albert on Oct. 15 for a 2009 sixth-round bantam draft pick. The Raiders had taken him with the 17th pick in the 2004 bantam draft. Palazzo has four points and 82 penalty minutes in 37 games this season. With the Giants, he had four points and 56 penalty minutes in 30 games. . . . The Brandon Wheat Kings have released Slovakian F Robert Brandis, 19. Brandis, who also had a stint with the Saskatoon Blades, had two points in 24 games with Brandon. He had been pointless in four games with the Blades. . . . The Portland Winter Hawks have released Swedish RW Viktor Sjodin, 19, and C Matt Betker, 18. Sjodin, in his second season, had 12 points in 34 games, while Betker had eight points in 38 outings. . . . The Kootenay Ice has assigned D Jordan Wilkins, 17, to the BCHL's Merritt Centennials. He had one goal in 30 games. Last season he had one goal in 25 games. Wilkins was the 20th overall pick in the 2005 draft. . . . The Saskatoon Blades assigned F Jordan Braid, 18, to the SJHL's Kindersley Klippers. He had one assist and 22 penalty minutes in 29 games with Saskatoon. . . . The Prince George Cougars have assigned G Tommy Tartaglione, 19, to the BCHL's Surrey Eagles. He will remain on the Cougars' list in case Real Cyr or Ian Curtis gets hurt. . . . The Eagles had room because they dealt Andrew Hammond, 19, to the Vernon Vipers, who lost Bryce Christianson, 20, to the U of Alaska-Anchorage during the Christmas break.

THE MacBETH REPORT: F Hnat Domenichelli will be on the move after this season. The former Kamloops centre is in his fifth season with Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland’s NL A. However, Lugano, which plays in the same league, has announced that it has signed him to a five-year contract starting next season. Players on Lugano’s roster at present include G David Aebischer, F Anson Carter and F Marty Murray. . . . (Editor’s note: Kind of neat that a team in same league is able to sign another team’s player for next season and announce it right now. Can you imagine the Detroit Red Wings announcing today that they have signed Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin to a five-year deal that kicks in next season?) . . . As well, former Kelowna G Kelly Guard, who was released by the Vienna Capitals last week, has sign with Yunost Minsk (Belarus). . . .

WJC BIDDING GAME: The 2009 World Junior Championship, which is the next edition of the annual puckfest, will be held in Ottawa, while the 2010 and 2012 championships are also scheduled to be played in Canada. The bidding process hasn’t yet begun but Saskatoon officials have told the StarPhoenix that they will be bidding for either the 2010 or 2012 event. The Saskatoon organizing committee will submit a letter of intent to Hockey Canada by the Feb. 1 deadline. The 1991 WJC was held in Saskatchewan, with most games in Regina and Saskatoon. Canada beat Russia in the final at Credit Union Centre (it was then known as SaskPlace) in Saskatoon. It is expected that the Saskatoon bid will involve playing games throughout the province as was the case for the 1991 tournament. . . . Hockey Canada has asked the bids, including business plans, be in by April 1. Presentations will be made in Calgary in June. . . . The StarPhoenix also reports that “the Saskatoon Blades continue to consider a bid for the 2010 Memorial Cup. . . . That proposal would have to be submitted later this summer. However that bid is almost on the backburner as the team has not played as expected this season, and doesn't appear to have the players in place to give it a legitimate chance.” . . .

CLARK SIGHTING: Former Kamloops Blazers GM/head coach Dean Clark attended a WHL game Wednesday for the first time since he was fired Nov. 7. He was in Kelowna and watched the Rockets beat the Chilliwack Bruins, 3-1. While there he told Rockets radio voice (and blogger) Regan Bartel that he has applied to Hockey Canada for a coaching position with the U-18 program.
