THE SCORE
Swift Current 2, Kamloops 0
WHAT HAPPENED
The Blazers didn‚t score. It’s that simple. And you had the feeling they
could have played all night and not beaten Broncos G Travis Yonkman.
THE STANDINGS
The Blazers (14-18-1-3) are sixth in the 10-team Western Conference, three
points behind the Everett Silvertips (15-13-5-0) and one ahead of the
Seattle Thunderbirds (14-17-1-2), who already have played 26 road games. The
Broncos (20-14-0-1) came out of the weekend tied for fourth with the Regina Pats in the 12-team Eastern
Conference.
THE STREAK
Kamloops RW Kenton Dulle had his 14-game point streak halted. He had 21
points, including eight goals, in what is the WHL’s second-longest streak
this season. Vancouver Giants F Evander Kane had a 22-gamer to start the
season.
THE DEFENCEMAN
Kamloops D Michal Siska will miss his club’s last game before Christmas. He
is off to Kitchener to attend Slovakia’s precompetition/selection camp prior
to the World Junior Championship. Should he make the team, he would miss at
least six more WHL games.
THE WINGER
Kamloops F Brendan Ranford won’t rejoin his teammates immediately after
Christmas. Instead, he will play for Team Pacific at the Under-17 World
Hockey Challenge in the Port Alberni area.
THE ATTENDANCE
The Blazers are averaging 4,184 fans per game through 20 home games. A year
ago, they played their 20th game on Dec. 30, at which point the average was
4,555.
THE COACH
Dean Chynoweth, the Broncos’ GM/head coach, now has 250 WHL head-coaching
victories to his credit. He is fifth among active WHL coaches.
WE LOVE B.C.
The Broncos are 3-0-0-0 on their B.C. Division tour, having won in Prince
George (7-6), Kelowna (3-1) and Kamloops. They finish in Vancouver on
Tuesday and Chilliwack on Wednesday.
THE DAILY NEWS THREE STARS
1. G Travis Yonkman, Swift Current. He won this one.
2. G Justin Leclerc, Kamloops. Gave his guys a chance.
3. C Cody Eakin, Swift Current. Grit and a goal in his first game in a
month.
NEXT UP
The Blazers meet the Cougars in Prince George on Wednesday and then break
for Christmas. Kamloops returns Dec. 27 against the Rockets in Kelowna and
then is at home against Prince George on Dec. 28.
