Friday . . . early

D Jared Cowen will play his first game tonight (Friday) since he suffered a major knee injury in February. Cowen, who plays for the Spokane Chiefs, will be in the Ottawa Senators’ lineup as they visit the Montreal Canadiens. Cowen was the ninth overall pick in the NHL’s 2009 draft. Cowen needed surgery to repair torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments after he was injured. Just 18, he almost certainly will be returned to the Chiefs in the next while. . . . But he won’t be back in time to play in the season-opening doubleheader against the Cougars in Prince George. However, the Chiefs did get back three key forwards – Tyler Johnson (Minnesota Wild), Levko Koper (Atlanta Thrashers) and Mitch Wahl (Calgary Flames) – and all three will be in the lineup Friday and Saturday nights.

The IHL’s Flint Generals have signed F Tyler Willis (Swift Current, Seattle, 1993-97) and D Kyle Kos (Red Deer, Kamloops, 1996-99). . . . Willis played the last six seasons with the Kalamazoo Wings, who have moved on to the ECHL. . . . Kos is going into his 12th season as a pro. He played the last two seasons with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
